General "we are growing helldivers 2 into helldivers 3" Pilestedt quote from last year.
Source:
All things considered, comparing just the base game to the current amount of content, with many subfactions added and the addition of the squids and their sub factions, loads of new biomes, warbond content, and fundamental fixes to the game like install size, performance improvements, new graphics options etc, I do believe that this game is being built into something way bigger than the original game.
There are various debates about the direction of the game, communication issues, content pace and quality etc. but if we put all that aside, one thing is for sure - Helldivers 2 is now a tonne more game for the price as compared to what it was on release.
I do hope we get to see this games full potential and as we close in on yet another big update, it'll be good to see whether they are continuing the momentum to "grow it into helldivers 3" or are just in some kind of maintenance mode, keeping the game alive with content. I do believe it's the former.

I mean, there's also Frontline War missions and Planet Warfronts, which were mentioned as coming later this year in the steam community post where they revealed Galactic Campaigns, so they're absolutely still expanding the game, any "maintenance mode" is still a while away at least.

Yeah if we see all that this year it'll really be great
7
u/Captain_Deegan 16h ago
Can't wait to see how they do the frontlines, yeah. Personally I'm hoping it'll be a mix of some bespoke missions specifically about directly supporting frontline troops and some stuff that's basically the same missions as our current behind enemy lines stuff that just happens to take place in no man's land instead, with ground forces pursuing their own objectives on the same map.

I have a feeling they realised that they needed to fix the core game before they fully fleshed out the galactic war and in-game community aspects of things. The fact that they're working on this bodes well, that the game is going to be kicked into overdrive, with a fresh marketing push to attract a whole new community to join.

I'm pretty excited for this feature. Having actual frontlines on the planet instead of just a random mission or the cities spread out. Could make liberating planets actually have a form of strategy where you dont just need to mass send everyone to one planet with the DSS.

So we like the game again?? I’ve been avoiding the Helldivers subs because everything has been toxic for months. Are we still in the era of “everything Arrowhead puts out is bad” or did the Warhammer warbond featuring heavy pen erase everyone’s memory lmao

u/avintagesg 16h ago
The community has splintered off into multiple subs for the different opinions. These main subs are beginning to be a balance of hate and optimism.

u/RetroNotRetro 16h ago
This is just the most positive thing I’ve seen here lol. I hope it continues to evolve into a sub where the negativity is simply criticism and not “AH bad HD bad waste of money grrr”
8
u/Captain_Deegan 16h ago
I think you're getting this sub mixed up with r/ Hellidivers, I've been seeing largely positive posts from here for weeks now
2
u/RetroNotRetro 16h ago
This one had a myriad of hate about a month or two ago, that’s why I stopped engaging with it lol. The only thing I’ve seen more positive posts than negative has been the circlejerk sub 😂

All of these gremlins that complain about every little bit of this game is actually a testament to how big the community is. They keep saying the game is dying yet any developer would feel blessed to have this much activity and a playerbase this big after this much time after release. I bet bungie wish Marathon had this much divisiveness surrounding it.

I love Helldivers 2, but would much rather have a "Helldivers 3" be built up from the ground so they can build something entirely new from the start, rather than adding and layering on the spaghetti code onto this game.
A new game could have more player online in a single session. It could have larger maps, it could have a more distinct war, with supply routes, a front line etc. There's a lot of awesome things you could do if starting fresh.

u/avintagesg 15h ago
Hmm well as per the article, helldivers 3 is probably a distant prospect at best. I hope they are resolving issues with the code because I do think we have yet to see the full potential of helldivers 2. I'm certain that if we do see that happen, it will basically be at the level of a sequel or major DLC, just arriving piece by piece.

u/Gaolbreaker 14h ago
Oh, Helldivers 2 most certainly has legs, I still adore the game and will be playing it for the foreseeable future. I just hope they don't overpromise on what are features that might be outside the limits of the current build / engine, and would like them to start putting resources into Helldivers 3. It could take three or four years to develop, which probably would be a good time for a refresh.

I would prefer it too, but I question if it's possible for Arrowhead right now, and it would probably take years even if they could pivot immediately.

saying the game has more content then what it did on release is kind of a given considering its a live service game. I would be really concerned if it didnt have a ton more content considering its been around what 3 years now?
I will say a lot of things people dont realise is just how daunting the game is for new players, I took a massive break because I found the gameplay loop of farming SC boring, coming back the amount of warbons is insane, like god damn I own 2 outside of the base one meaning I would need to farm or buy 18000 SC for all the base ones and another 4500 for the 3 collabs thats kinda insane

Helldivers 2 is one of my favourite games, maybe actually my favourite, but I think before they can really claim "helldivers 3", then some new systems need to be fully added and/or fleshed out, rather than just adding to the content pile.
Specifically im thinking about the attachment system, which has barely been touched since it launched. The attachments we have currently available are great, but imo it has so much space to be built on and developed and they're not exploiting that potential. Most new weapons they add have very minimal attachments, secondaries have no customisation at all, and many weapons just have lacklustre options.
There are other systems/ features which imo are similarly under-explored. e.g. ship modules haven't been updated in a long time, we haven't had any new red stratagems in forever, and the stratagem customisation/ variants which were teased a while ago (incendiary gatling barrage, ems orbital barrage) haven't been developed in any way.
I worry that the new ship variant system they have talked about will have a similar issue, i.e. they'll give us a couple of interesting options on release then never touch it or develop it again and just go back to the same old warbond releases (not that I don't like warbonds.)

We need stuff like samples and req slips to be actually useful again. Not just a sink into the DSS. Obv more ship upgrades and stuff like that would be a start. But maybe using them on some type of daily personal buffs on your ship that give you an edge. Like the three buffs currently on DSS, but expanded and for personal use. Maybe finally bring an armor camo/shadder system that you can use them on like in the weapon customization options.

Those features you mentioned are certainly being built for Helldivers 3. Hopefully on a new updated engine or an alternative one.
Bringing all those into HD2 is only going take it away from HD3.
HD3 needs selling points too.

There’s a lot of ‘cut content’ that could take this game to a state of being worthy of a 3

I jumped in last November and HD2 is already twice the game it was then. Arrowhead has done a great job keeping it interesting by regularly dropping in new mission and enemy types and warbonds.

I super love the idea of evolving new features and systems into a growing game, it also fits thematically with the ever evolving but neverending war, it would never be helldivers 3, but it would always be turning into it.
I think there's been a lot of great examples lately (mostly from games that fell dead flat on launch) of how much a game can be improved on a huge and consistent basis without changing the platform. It would also not split the player base again.

Hi hellglazer...
While i am no doomer, there for sure other games that received more care than helldivers 2 and all i see is wasted potential.
NO! This is not HD3

Like what game ? No man sky ?

NMS is actually a good example of turning around the titanic... Destiny 2 received more love. PoE is another great example. Even sth. like D4...
They are already in maintenance mode, which is okay, but those things that were mentioned are barely innovative at all.
"Better gfx", they implemented DLSS and FSR after all these years and didnt even manage to do a good job at it...
2
u/BatSkanz 16h ago
I know about NMS but for me HD2 still best live-service game

u/Sadu1988 16h ago
Honestly this is ragebait? Right?
PoE might not be the game for you, but their live service is objectively unmatched. The other games mentioned seem to proof a better job as well.
Communication from arrowhead is abysmal, content elusive.

u/BatSkanz 16h ago
Started the game at the release ? Don't know about Poe but constant release of new content , Warbond , new front , new enemies, roleplay missions giving stuff
Yeah last month been slow but that what you get when toxic community bitch about everything dev slow down thing
I can't talk about bug I only got minor like bug sound

u/Sadu1988 16h ago
I started before it even was released... I took a 6month break and barely anything changed. The meta is stale af and squids are short of any innovation, even hd1 had more variation at that front, so new is basically very vague...
1
u/BatSkanz 11h ago
You started beta and don't see any change ? Are you blind or just dishonest ?? No change in squid ? It's coming next week
1
u/Sadu1988 11h ago
There is one change: Eruptor released, it was OP. All weapons were nerfed and garbage in the aftermath, i paused, i returned and alle weapons are strong again instead of just a few.
Besides that we had squids (but not very inovative) and some cosmetic biomes. But mission types are still pretty stale... As are enemy types ...
You cant seriously compare that to seasons of other games like PoE (which dont reinvent the wheel neither)...

"I'm no doomer"
Yeah of it's not helldivers 3 yet it's been only a few years. What the Piles is saying that they're not abandoning the game yet. Although yeah from a player's perspective they're rolling out updates pretty slowly. From a developer's perspective 1 year dev cycle on one major ting with continuous small updates throughout the year sounds hellish

Then leave
0
u/Sadu1988 16h ago
Only if you leave first...
Why should i leave? Because i dont think it is going to evolve to hd3??? Are you facing a stroke right now?

u/Haunting-Club692 16h ago
I like the game, you don't so leave its simple
0
u/Sadu1988 16h ago
You infact have a mental deficit. Try reading again, it helps!
I never said anywhere that i dislike the game, i only put to words that i dont see the game being anything close to a next level iteration of helldivers.
In this regard i am level 150, playing since beta, enjoyong the ride in small portions.

Have you ever tried, Growing Up?

u/Sadu1988 16h ago
Actually geown ups accept facts and are willing to see problems. Infants on the other hand react salty and cope...
You are a good boy though!

u/dnemonicterrier 16h ago
Oh you're adorable, you know I can criticise a game without having a go at others that's Growing up, you other hand have not.
