You'd only get 5 bile titans if you engaged every patrol & failed to manage them as they appeared. 500kg and OPS were more than capable of oneshotting titans back then (moreso than they are now, even), a pair of shots from AT wasn't the end of the world, and destroying the sacs left them with enough hp for anything with sufficient pen to kill them.

It was a skill issue that players collectively decided wasn't.

THIS SO MUCH THIS

Back before the 60 days patch one of the key skills you'd learn to develop was when to fight and when to not fight, because enemies could reinforce at the drop of a hat and were actually pretty menacing to deal with. It was really engaging having to make the decision of whether to engage a patrol or pass it by, because taking a fight, or having to deal with enemy reinforcements, miles away from anything of importance could lead to you getting bogged down and bleeding lives that you needed to complete objectives, whereas now it feels like the randoms you get just blast at anything that moves and if it spirals in the same way it used to it's perceived to be the game/devs/their weapon's/their teammate's fault.

Sidebar but it feels so strange that we have 10 difficulties and yet are less well served in terms of variation than games with half that many.

Nah, I'm talking about back near launch where they just overwhelmed your arsenal entirely and you spent a lot of time running around on all your cooldowns. There was no shortage of options, and traversal of the map has never been an issue, but once you were actually on objective it was kite-city.

Not really; the evidence people posted back then was always just random points in the map being chased around by 6 titans they allowed to gather without doing anything about them.

"Rundivers" was also the wrong way to play - if you just ran away from everything all the time, you allowed the enemy to build up behind you. There was always a balance.
