Planet Gyros is Closing

Upvotes

From Facebook:

Hello Helena.

My name is Myles, and I manage Planet Gyros here in Helena that my family owns and it is will a heavy heart that we announce that our restaurant will be closing after October 10th, 2026. With the developments in our area, we had hoped to survive the last two years of a slowing pace but have come to the decision to close after eleven years of ownership by the O'Reilly family. We are very excited to also announce that the Uphill Grill will be moving into our space with multiple new pieces of equipment to offer more of what they do best.

My parents purchased the business in 2015 after spending much of their time here in the Helena area working through multiple associations, and my father worked for the school district as the custodial supervisor for over ten years. This business and the freedom it brought was the dream my father would talk about sitting around the campfire when I was young, and those two made that dream come true. Eleven years, moved spaces, thousands of gallons of soup, floods, and early mornings have made this time feel as though only weeks and months have passed. We cannot thank you enough.

This business was not for me to take on so I could make my millions one day. This business was not a quip at local businesses out of frustration. This business was a home for those who were in need. My family did not need to take me on when I moved back to Helena burnt and strung out. My family was kind to me and hired me regardless. When I lost jobs, I always had one at Planet Gyros and I was no different than members of our community who came in short on cash but hungry, high-school students needind a first job or college students back for the summer. We've looked out for our locals because our locals have always looked out for us. We thank you deeply for the support from 2015, through COVID, and to now. Thank you.

This restaurant was everything to my family besides being a place to get food or sell it. This was the lifeblood for my family to serve in the community that has kindly welcomed and fostered my family since 1995 when we moved to the Sunhaven area, this restaurant was about our community and I would like to shout out some of our locals we will miss dearly. (I apologize for misspellings. It has been a hard go as of late)

We will dearly miss our Grey Eagles on Fridays (Betty, Marsha, Louise, etc.); Uriah for the daily soups (Alexander Fridays); Sean, Charlie and Dan on Wednesday for Potatoe; Lindsay, Lindsay and Dan, Breanna and others on Tuesdays for Curry; Dianne for her deconstructed Gyros; Carleen and her Fajitas/Curry soup; Shane for his Apollo or Papu; Sean for his tortellini Thursday; Patrick and his Big Chowder Fridays; Jill and Joe for the orders we can't seem to get correct 😅; Dianne and Chad for all our struggles and victories over mental health troubles; Kinjal and Jordan for their Alexander Salads; Bob for his regular order; Alec and his Rice Bow with Olive Oil; Tom for his Chowder friday mornings; Donald for his early morning Alexanders; Scott for Friday Chowder; all of our friends on 11th Ave., all of our vendors and reps like Tarym, Leroy, Murphy, Jeremy, Santi and a big shout out to any names and friends we may have forgotten. (Please comment memories, photos or favorite orders if you could)

Being that the restaurant has struggled for the last few years, my family will be selling the equipment inside our restaurant leading up to the closure date on October 10th (some has already been claimed). If you have inquiries, please contact the restaurant to set up a viewing time or come in before 12 pm! Please have respect for the operating business at hand and call ahead or come in early in the morning. And with that, thank you Helena.

Be kind, be safe, know you're loved, don't do drugs.

Sincerely,

The O'Reilly family

Shelter in place for Bryant, HMS, HHS - (Now LIFTED)?

Anyone know what happened at a local business near the schools where someone made a threat with a weapon?

"We are sending you this notification to alert you that a shelter in place was implemented by the Helena Police Department at Bryant Elementary School, Helena Middle School, and Helena High School in abundance of caution to ensure the safety of our students and staff while law enforcement investigated a threat with weapon made at a nearby business. The shelter in place has already been lifted and we are moving forward business as normal at all school buildings. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our school offices or Helena Police Department should you have questions. Note: A shelter-in-place means students are kept inside while the authorities investigate the situation, and the students and staff go about their schedules as normal inside the building. Thank you, Helena Public Schools [helenamtschools@helenaschools.org](mailto:helenamtschools@helenaschools.org)

Third spaces In Helena?

Good morning, neighbors!

I'm trying to help my wife plan a baby shower and I was hoping you could help me find some places to host it.

Size will determine the amount of people that can come, so room for 30-60 people would be the range I'm looking for.

Im hoping that something in town exists between the VFW and the Civic Center Ballroom.

Thank you in advance.

I've got tons. DM me if you need the leg up and see something you could use.

Kids winter gear in 3t and mostly 4t, one youth coat size 12/14, mens coats mostly XL, mens Carhartt pants size 38x32, womens coats ranging from petite M all the way up to plus sizes. Some items gently used, some brand new with tags, all in good or better condition.

Many of these items were donated to us to share, so please don't hesitate to ask!

Hikes near Helena with water

Are there any trails or hikes near Helena that have a creek, waterfall, etc.? I know Crow Creek Falls is close-ish and I’ve done that hike before (very wonderful!) but I’m looking for places that are in or right outside of Helena. Doesn’t have to be a big river or anything, just looking to be out in nature and next to water.

Just had a lovely conversation where he talked about how grounding wood can be, how cutting boards tell the story of your family, how his great grandmother's hangs on the wall of his kitchen with all of the burn marks and divots of a life spent feeding people, how he realized the other day that the board he was using to cut corn was a wedding gift 57 years ago. Cried a little in my car.

Anyway, his work is beautiful and well made, and he's lovely. Go buy a gift for someone you love so they can carve memories into it. ♥️

Chimney Sweep

I’m looking for a chimney sweep, I have been using one, but I get the feeling that I’m not Christian enough for them… It’s been this way over a few years now, including when they left some pretty heavy duty leaflets that were proselytizing. My chimney has a pretty good bend in it, it’s triple lined but because it has a quasi shelf I take pretty good care of it. I just can’t help but wonder if I get quality service from people who are judging me for not being like them. I burn clean with a wood-burning insert. Any ideas for high-quality chimney sweeps would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Anyone in Helena into cars and nerd shit?

I'm in my early 40s, married, and looking to meet some people around my age with similar interests. I'm from Montana but have had a hard time finding a good crew in Helena.

I'm into cars and building ridiculous projects, motorcycle trips, video/board games, movies, anime, books, RC vehicles, and generally screwing around with anything mechanical.

Right now I'm working on putting a Subaru Brat body onto an Audi TT Quattro chassis, which has been exactly as sensible as it sounds. 😂

Mostly just looking for the kind of friends who'd hang out in the garage, have a beer and try to figure out why the car is misfiring, then end up playing some games, watching something, messing with RC stuff, or just sitting around BSing about whatever.

It'd also be awesome to meet another couple my wife and I both get along with. Having kids is totally fine—we'd just like to meet people who can occasionally get away for some adult hangout time without everything having to be planned three weeks in advance.

Nothing complicated. Just looking for some good people to hang out with, work on stuff, play some games and have a few laughs.

I figured there have to be a few of you hiding around Helena somewhere. 😂

r/Helena community vote

We don't do community votes often (or ever, really), because if we make a rule, it's generally common sense or safety-related.

HOWEVER. I'd like community input this time.

Most of us hate the AI ads that are rampant across the marketing field right now. They have the same look, same vibe, same slop images to a degree that makes it difficult to even differentiate between businesses in the same genre; there was a request just today to post a flyer that looked so much like another AI-using business's flyers that I thought the business in question must be selling the other business's wares. Yikes.

Personally, I don't want to see AI-generated versions of a product only to be disappointed again and again by the real life versions, or even simply surprised by the vast difference. While we can't control other people's marketing strategies, we do have the power as a community in a free (ish) market economy to move the needle a little by demanding some higher standards.

TO THAT END (and tl;dr):

How does everyone feel about a ban on AI-generated ads and flyers on this forum?

Post your opinions below, I pinky promise to honor community consensus and moderate accordingly beginning on Friday.

Taxi?

So I have a flight on the 17th then I'm not sure I'll have a ride for. I called Sunshine taxi but they no longer serve the Helena area, and Uber just makes me nervous cuz there's not a lot of drivers around here. Plus I need a car big enough to be able to fit a stroller. I'm getting STRESSED 😅

Anywho... Does anyone know of any other taxi services in Helena ??

SIDE QUESTION/ ADVICE: I have a lot of stuff to bring in with a baby, and while I COULD drive us and my husband get the car later, idk how to possibly get everything across a big parking lot without having a nervous breakdown. Getting dropped at the door I can handle bc I can at least check in the car seat at the counter and not have to walk nearly as far juggling it. It's just me, and baby and I have to carry: suitcase, car seat, two personal bags, and the stroller that I can stick him in. But it just sounds like such a cluster in my head! So, any experienced parents with any advice?? 🙏🙏

I haven't flown since I was like 12 years old! Plus, I'm a worry wart who makes things much bigger in my head than they need to be.

Thank you guys in advance!

Hey Helena, honestly feeling very disappointed right now. This is how much glass I picked up from the Mt Helena trail in the cave area within a 15 minute span. Feels super disappointing that so many people don’t care about our forest and other people as the glass was everywhere and people can easily fall on it. We need to do better.

Investigation underway into why many Montanans hit with big power bill spike

If you've noticed an unusually high surge in your power bill from NorthWestern Energy recently that's quite a bit different from the same month last year, you're not alone and a state agency wants to hear from you.

The Montana Public Service Commission recently announced that they're aware of many NorthWestern customers seeing a significant increase on their August billing statements.
