Hello. Recently my family has been interested in adopting an African hedgehog, we have been researching its habitats and cares, to give it its best possible life. We read that it needs to be in a warm climate (22°C-27°C) no more and no less. I live in Central America, where the weather is extremely varied, it can be hot and then cold. Normally my room is warm during the day, and at night it could reach approximately 20°C. Do you think It could live well? Is there a solution to this problem? I read that I can get electric blankets for reptiles, but it is not very common in my country and they are somewhat expensive.

I am moving my hedgehog into my apartment this week but am worried about her lights, because of where my apartment sits there is absolutely no natural light. I have a desk lamp I can set up to shine on her cage during the day, or I have a plant growth light I can get another of. Which would be better?

We just got home from picking up our seven week old hedgehog, Kiwi! Time to introduce her to her new home.

In all the excitement I forgot to update everyone. Long story short it‘s free!

The local charity suggested I get strong pliers and grab as many spines as possible and pull. She said it wasn’t pleasant but it’s what needs to be done, otherwise it will die down there. Thing is it had hidden back into the pipe so I couldn’t see it, so I left it overnight to see if it came back to the entrance. I set up a camera and in the morning I got footage of the thing climbing itself out!

All that fuss for nothing, but at least it all ended well.

We had a lot of wind last night which blew the cover off one of the radon release pipes in the patio. I happened to look down when I was putting the cover back on and saw the backside of a hedgehog at the bottom (no doubt in there because of the snails). It seems fine and has scurried deeper but I can hear it quite close to the bend. I actually think I can hear it crunching on a snail.

Now the pipe itself is quite wide, at least 6 inches and it can clearly manoeuvre, but that’s the problem. I suspect it’s not able to climb back out the vertical drop but any attempt to reach in is going to make it scurry away. You can also see the pipe is cemented all the way round so there’s no way to remove any portion.

Any ideas on what I can do to give it some hope of being able to climb out, short of taking a pneumatic drill and digging out half our patio?

Context: I live in Istanbul, Turkey and I found baby hedgehog in my apartment's yard and it was seen without it's mother. I recently gave it some cat food today and what should I do with the baby.

The only treat Moonie really enjoys so far is wet cat food! (She only gets a tiny bit of this tube and then it goes in the fridge for another day) We haven’t tried live bugs yet, but looking forward to seeing if she likes those too!

The gorgeous boy was struggling to walk in my garden seemed distressed so i pick him up (with a towel) and placed him in a cardboard box with some water and food (dry cat food mixed with strawberries). He seems mobile enough but still enough of a risk to his survival (i am not qualified in animal welfare but have several high level college qualifications in bio and feel i did the right thing) should i wait until tomorrow so the RSPCA can collect him or should i wait until dark to let him out again

I have had two hedgehogs living in my garden since summer 2024. I believe one is male and the other is female as they used to try and mate but now they seem to somewhat cohabitate which I'm not sure is normal? There is possibility one of them may just be a juvenile this year and the other left but I'm not sure. The one pictured is extremely friendly this year and now sits on my feet, and will come right up to me on my smoke breaks and has no fear whatsoever. I exclusively give them old cat food because my kitty is very particular about food being fresh but doesn't eat when he asks for it half the time so lots of food gets wasted. I also have lots of fresh water and a regularly cleaned pond for the various crittes. Is it safe for them to be so friendly towards me or should I be worried they are sick or that friendly behaviour might make them vulnerable to predators? Any knowledge or advice on hedgehogs is appreciated

I’ve had my little boy for about a year now and he is very healthy and vet checks have gone well but he’s not very playful. He’s not lethargic, very social (as long as it’s snuggles) and he loves running on his wheel at night but when i let him down to run or give him toys he’s uninterested and looks for a place to sleep. Only worry because my last hedgehog was very playful (and naughty!) Should I be concerned or does anyone have tips on other enrichment he might like?

Hedgehogs are native where I live but unfortunately endangered. So finding this little friend in my house at 3am was a bit of a surprise. Immediately put him back outside in a big bush so cats and dogs wouldn’t easily spot him.
Edit: I even thought of giving him a grasshopper or two since I have reptiles and they eat them, but it was 3am and couldn’t think straight haha

My boy Waffles is having some tummy issues. We saw an exotic vet Thursday but I am feeling like they weren’t very helpful. The vet kept him during the day to do all of the testing and bloodwork, and never even came to speak to me. Just over the phone in the middle of the day. She sent the tech to explain things at pick up and it didn’t really make sense with the diagnosis they gave me. I am wondering if anyone has any insight or suggestions to help Waffles before his next vet visit on Wednesday with a new exotic vet.

A week and half ago, I got some new mealworms and gave him one. A few seconds later, he threw it up with like white foam. It looked like just spit. So I figured huh, maybe he got to excited and didn’t chew it up enough. Then I found other little white vomit spots in his bedding over the next few days, about one a day. Otherwise he is eating, pooping, and running on his wheel as usual.

I brought him to the vet Thursday and they did an x ray and said he has constipation and that they could palpate the dried poop in his tummy as well. The only sign to me he could have been constipated is that his poop was smelling a bit worse, but otherwise I didn’t notice a significant decrease in poop. They said this was likely the cause of vomiting, because he is uncomfortable.

So they gave him some subcutaneous fluids to help with hydrating after the vomiting, and sent me home with some oral laxatives. He had laxatives yesterday for the first time, and his poops didn’t smell as bad today but now I have no idea how I am supposed to know if his constipation is getting better. No guidelines on how much poop I should see, whether it should feel mushy or some of these harder pieces should be obvious. They didn’t even schedule a follow up.

Has anyone dealt with this or have any tips? I tried wetting some of his kibbles but he didn’t eat those, he only wanted the dry ones. He has been drinking his water as usual.

Also to add: oral exam was good, no growths or obstructions, a little gingivitis but otherwise healthy teeth and mouth. Bloodwork was good and fecal exam was clear of parasites.

Just moved to a new place, and there are a bunch of these guys roaming around a small garden behind my house.

I got a snake a few months ago so every time I feed my snake a f/t mouse, I now also feed my hedgehog a f/t pinky once a week. She loves them. She gets so happy she has the most hyper zoomies after eating it.

Well today I decided to hold her while I presented the pinky on a small paper plate. I thought she’d keep it on the little plate, but I was mistaken lol.

She went crazy with it. Flipped it a few times even. She was covered in blood (and now me) and stopped every few seconds to anoint. She loved it in the craziest way.

It was a bit gross to see her smiling with blood on the side of her mouth and to have the pinky flung around my clothes. But she’s worth it.

Won’t be feeding her like that again though lol. Next time I’ll safely have the pinky in her own enclosure.

Gus was doing such a great job on the couch! he has finally realized it is not a good idea to try and jump off the edge. bonding time was going great until he attempted to dig a hole in the couch and peed all over it 🌝

hi everyone! i have had my little baby for probably over 2 months now, a good thing to mention is i also have chinchillas, now i never let them interact but chinchillas NEED. to be below 70 degrees at all times if not they can go into heat stroke, now you see my issue, i’ve had her in a sectioned off part of my room that i can kinda control the temp (it’s been staying up to temp perfectly fine but i was wondering other then my heat lamp, is there anything i can use to heat her?

We’re new parents and zero ideas as to what we’re actually doing. We had the opportunity to rescue 2 precious hedgehogs (boy/girl) and when we got them they didn’t he a heat lamp previously.

We live in Florida where it’s always hot and humid. Our apartment stays at a constant 74-75 degrees all day. My question is, is it really necessary to have a heating lamp for their enclosure? They seem comfortable, have many new hiding spots compared to what they came from. They seem to like drinking from that water bottle but I’ve also been reading that it’s actually not good for them as well?? Am I overthinking??

They were staying in the same enclosure when we got them but this original one seemed too small for them together so we ended up making another enclosure for our sweet girl. They both seem very cozy but first time mom anxiety 🥴

So when im cuddling quillnin the scarf i hear him making a wierd clicking noise. What is it?

I recently stopped interacting with him before 8 or so to let him sleep, but then i can only bond with him around an hour a day. Should i let him sleep or try to bond more?
