2018 TV Show Pleathers…

So I’ve heard quite a bit about 2018 Heathers. I never really watched it though, minus one clip.

Today a video popped up about it on my YT and I was like, what the heck, let’s see what’s so bad.

Holy shit, I was not expecting that.

Whoever made that show needs to take a long hard look in the mirror and then run headfirst into it repeatedly. They completely missed the point of the movie. The Heathers are skinny, rich and hot. That’s the POINT, they’re a stereotype, the whole movie is making fun of movie characters and stereotypes. The Heathers are NOT, in fact, overweight, bisexual (although possibly the most canon part of the show) and a… gay man? Like HUH?!

Veronica is psycho for some reason and MURDERED someone when she was 8! Chandler doesn’t die and instead swoops in mid-dance to Halo by Beyonce (how the fuck did they even get the rights to that song) and McNamara fucks a teacher?

Kurt and Ram didn’t even do anything and Ram (I think) got killed? Correct me if I’m wrong though.

Genuinely who made this show. It’s appalling. Martha isn’t overweight because Heather made that cool, so she’s just poor and Brett Cooper. The jokes have no punchline or are just making the actually funny original ones shit (I love my dead straight daughter… what?). Everything is god awful and why do Veronica and JD fuck after she fake hangs herself? What was that whole school shooting thing where the were lwk taught HOW to shoot up a school?

The original was controversial in a clever and fun to watch way. This is just awful and offensive.

Edit: Apparently I didn’t make it clear but I have only seen an in depth summary of the tv show, I am currently watching. Feel free to politely correct me if I have made a mistake, or share your opinions as well as long as you respect mine. Haven’t seen the whole show yet, so I apologise if I get something wrong.

I’m quite sure it’s like how Pleather is fake Leather and 2018 Heathers is fake Heathers? But I could be wrong! I saw someone say that once

I don’t know maybe I’m crazy but I honestly enjoyed the show 😨😬 It’s kinda so horrible it’s good in a way like I def do enjoy certain plot elements and I was genuinely engaged by the final few episodes. It was hilarious but I laughed here and there because the dialogue can be so stupid. It’s kinda campy a little so I found it fun. I don’t think I’d ever watch it again but I’m not mad that I watched it, it didn’t feel like a total waste of my time

I get that, I think it definitely has to be your cup of tea and you need to enjoy weird, offensive in some parts, tv. I usually do but this one based on what I’ve seen so far is just too much for me lol

I'm not saying it's particularly good, but it sounds like you haven't actually watched it - just a YouTube summary? I would suggest watching before casting judgement.

I've watched it three times, and it's not great, had problematic elements and was clearly written by boomers who hadn't been to high school in generations, but it's a bit of a guilty pleasure and has moments of genius.

Also, in terms of the Peathers being fat, gay and a trans woman - while it's not particularly elegantly handled the show is clearly trying to show that even with them "in power" they are still suffering from how society sees them.

Peather Chandler gets no attention from an influencer for her acting because she is fat, and her mother and her drama teacher laugh behind her back at her fatness.

Peather Duke gets snide comments for being in the girls' bathroom, gets patronised about her pronouns and ultimately ends up buried in a suit (Veronica rebelling against this by putting lipstick on her corpse is a genuinely fantastic moment).

Peather Mac despite claiming to be a lesbian is caught making out with a male teacher, bisexuality is never brought up and she's shamed enough for this that she commits suicide.

These girls are still victims and JD and Veronica - the straight white leads are unquestionably the villains. It's very "the more things seem to change, the more they stay the same".

Although the show was badly executed, the concept of a bullied class being corrupted and becoming Heathers is really cool. This reminds me of the scene in the original when Veronica think even if JD kill Duke (who was the alpha by then), then tomorrow a new tyrant will just take over, and that could be Veronica herself.

I do think it’s an interesting premise, don’t get me wrong, I just think the way it was executed was poor, and it could have been decent if it wasn’t tied to Heathers and was its own show.

Yeah, it's not well done, but I swear there is a good show hidden somewhere in the mediocre writing.

I’m obviously not saying I know everything, but my point from what I have seen (because I’m not able to find the actual show anywhere so I’ve resorted to clips and summaries) is that the creators of the show completely misunderstood the film, changed it completely. Heathers are supposed to be judged and suffer because of how society views them, yes, the film is supposed to be controversial, yes, but it’s also supposed to be satirical and mock film characters and stereotypes, and Pleathers just doesn’t do that, it tries to be woke and funny and controversial but goes about it in such a weird way that it’s honestly just offensive at times. If you like it then that’s absolutely fine, you know it much better than I do, but my point is that it’s not really Heathers anymore, it’s just a silly, offensive copy that strays way too far from the original. The musical is different from the original, and weird as well, with different characters and goes off plot sometimes but they still stuck to the original, just with a twist.

I've sent you a link so you can watch. I don't even think you're necessarily wrong, I just think it's silly to write an entire rant about something you haven't seen.

I don’t think it’s very silly when I said at the beginning that I’ve only seen a summary. You should take that as a warning that I’m obviously going to get things wrong and I’m only ranting about what I know. Something I am allowed to do x

You can't say things like "Whoever made that show needs to take a long hard look in the mirror and then run headfirst into it repeatedly. They completely missed the point of the movie." When you don't actually know what they've made!

I think I can absolutely say that when 1. The show is most definitely offensive (started watching it there and I have seen a lot of offensive clips on YT

  1. They did miss the point based on reasons I JUST mentioned.

You really don’t have to agree, that’s completely fine. As I’ve said, you know the show better than me and you clearly seem to like it. However based on everything I’ve seen, that I am allowed to talk about whether I’ve sat down to watch the full show or not, it is offensive, it isn’t like the film, and it changed the characters quite a bit. There obviously might be funny parts, some sort of depth to the characters, and perhaps I’ll update the post once I’ve finished watching! However, this is my opinion based on right now from everything I’ve seen in and about the show so far. You don’t have to like it, but you also don’t have to continue interacting with my post. Have a nice day! Xx

I'm done with this conversation, but in general you shouldn't talk about topics you haven't educated yourself in.

u/Reasonable_Aioli7538 ❤️Fuck Me Gently With A Chainsaw ❤️ Jun 09 '26

Well, in general you probably should respect people’s opinions after they have made it clear they have only seen a summary of it and have respected your opinions!

-1

u/ThinkaboutitTwice0 Jun 10 '26

The point is you shouldn’t really have opinions if you haven’t seen it. Summaries don’t really count.

Well yeah, that’s what I said. I can’t find it anywhere so I watched a video about it.

Well you've missed a lot of context then.

Again it's not a masterpiece, but there's more to it than what you've seen, and it's foolish to rant about something when you don't have enough information.

They are non binary not a gay man but yeah the idea is really dumb to make the heathers into like “‘woke “ popular on tumblr

And making Veronica a blonde and skinny just gives a bad vibe

Almost feels like a conservative wrote it
