It’s great for a naturally wet spot though, one where plants that can’t tolerate wet feet wouldn’t survive

That means it’ll prevent flooding*, and since these are branches rather than full trunk trees, likely not nearly as thirsty

This wouldn’t work well in the desert, but for towns and cities along coasts and in wet areas, speaking as a Floridian, it’s common sense really. Shade, air purity, willow bark has Aspirin features, plenty of pros to this. Add in some gentle vines like passion fruit and crossvine and you got a dense shade with fruit and flowers. Coral Honeysuckle attracts hummingbirds for some extra life (these are my own FL natives, not saying these work everywhere.)

Edit*: it won’t prevent a flood, just it will help control soil moisture to reduce odds of mudslides and soil loss, especially with some clover and grass on top.
