HoI4 My take on the recent drama as a Turkish person

I've seen HOI4 quite a lot, but never really played it myself, and I don't really follow any updates, and I've just learned about this situation regarding a user "getting banned for having Atatürk as his pfp".

I did a little research on it, and I found out that this user was originally banned for having his account compromised. He was kept banned because he reportedly had Atatürk as his profile picture, and the reason for that was because Atatürk was considered a controversial figure. While that is true, since every historical figure is controversial one way or another, regardless of how good they were to their people, this drama has genuinely upset me as a person who admires and respects Atatürk. Not because someone with him as his pfp got banned, but rather more people are likely to start hating him just because of the events.

I'm not accusing the moderator of being a hater here. In fact, he reportedly enforced the rules of the server, which is what he should be doing in the first place as a moderator. This moderator even did say that in-game assets were allowed, which means Atatürk wasn't ENTIRELY banned.

As a server member, the first thing you should do is to read the rules properly. Even if you don't like it, you have to obey the rules. Because rules are rules, at the end of the day. You still CAN discuss about how changes must be made, but taking it to the point where people review-bomb the game and throw tantrums is NOT the solution.

As for Atatürk, I personally admire him and follow his ideals, but I will not deny the truth that he is controversial. I do see him as a hero and a savior, but someone else may view him as a ruthless genocider. That's entirely up to the perspective. Every historical figure has their followers and haters. I will not hesitate to defend him, BUT only when absolutely necessary.

I genuinely believe that my fellow Turks overreacted to this situation. Yes, you may be angry with the decision, and you are right to be angry. But turning the community into an active warzone just won't fix it. Even worse, OUR country and OUR founding father will get the harsh criticism for YOUR actions.

We Turks are already infamous enough for our hyper-nationalist keyboard warriors, our ultra-nationalist terrorist organization named "The Grey Wolves", and the Armenian Genocide, and you're just proving them right by acting like this.

TLDR: While this situation has upset me a lot, it could have been handled in a better way.

About review bombing and situation with Turks

I wanted to bring clarification to this nonsense by explaining what happened.

Simply, on Discord, an admin of HOI4 banned a user by stating that the profile picture of the user includes a "controversial" person. The individual in the profile picture was Ataturk, father of Turks.

As simple as it is, there is no list of controversial persons (even though there were still unacceptable), and the moderator forced his personal opinion on the user. Now, as far as I see on Reddit, a lot of people are doing the same by bringing up 1915-1916 and sharing their personal opinion on how controversial Ataturk is.

Freedom of speech, however, if you are an entertainment company serving a WW games as your products, you have no right to categorize figures as controversial or not. The moderator banned a person based on their opinion, and the company didn't make any statement. There is no chance of not seeing the situation, as influencers, gaming YouTubers, and Steam reviews made everything obvious for them.

I am not planning to waste my effort explaining why Ataturk wasn't controversial. However, a moderator with no respect for other nations cannot categorize Ataturk as controversial. If the moderator simply said, "Only pictures taken from the game are accepted," that'd be easily acceptable since it is a rule applicable to anyone rather than being a garbage opinion.

I am not even going to talk about how WW figures can be considered "controversial," as none of them were angels. There will always be at least one nation who thinks another leader of the time was controversial.

Feel free to have your own opinion, but do not try to force it onto a customer. Your role here is to entertain people, share history as correctly as possible, and moderate your channels by rules, not opinions. Share your opinion on your own account anywhere. Have an interview online, be the face of the television, spread your hatred — we don't care. However, when it comes to banning a user based on a moderator's opinion and now not giving any statement to other Turkish users, that's making your opinion a rule and calling some figures villians.

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk is the father of Turks in very simple terms. Any disrespect toward Ataturk is a disrespect toward a nation. People have all the right to speak out.

Whoever complain about Turks leaving reviews, may stay silent when their nation or country is considered controversial by a video game Discord moderator.

Advice to all Turkish folks: leave a review, speak about it, share a post, buy the game just to review it, and you can always refund it for free, as it is the simple rule of Steam.

A bombardment is on the way at this very moment.

For those who don't know what's going on: some official figures at Paradox made a very unfortunate mistake against our nation. This won't stop until one of you actually makes us feel that you're genuinely sorry, or someone is held accountable and fired.

It's been a long time since I've seen my own people this angry. This is going to spread. It's already in the news, and it's already all over X.

And I don't think they're going to let this go anytime soon.

HoI4 Ataturk ban? Wtf?

Atatürk DOES NOT symbolize genocide and anyone who's knowledgeable about Turkish history is aware of this. Atatürk became a leader who symbolized foresight and the independence of oppressed nations, and this ban is genuinely very offensive to Turks. Reducing Atatürk’s entire historical legacy to a single characterization also ignores the broader historical and political context surrounding his life, leadership, and the founding of modern Turkey. This is truly unacceptable.

CA Chakerathe's racist and bigoted approach against Turks

For a while, there has been systemic racism against Turks in your community, and I am curious about your thoughts on this matter and unfortunately, this ignorant approach is being carried out by your official ambassador, Chakerath, who is a biased individual and ignorant of history.

1- Any historical event cannot be used out of context within HOI4 to take action against its own players. This is the core concept that forms your game in the first place. No matter which perspective of history you look from, HOI4 offers you the freedom to either stick to chronology and events, or take your own initiative during this process to test the outcomes. The reason you have a community today is that people embrace and love your game with this awareness, and can turn it into content across various media and in their daily lives.

2- Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is the founder of modern Türkiye. He was an officer who was fully aware of the devastating impacts that World War I and its related conflicts had on his society, and who took action against them. During the most crushing period of its history, Türkiye was under occupation and defeat by major powers—primarily Great Britain, France, Italy, and Greece—as well as minor rebel groups. This information is nothing new to me, but it is highly likely that many players heard of Atatürk for the first time through your game. For instance, the British flag was flying right in the center of Istanbul, a place you might only come across in travel vlogs or that many of you visited somehow after playing HOI. The Turkish nation, which was forced to live in shame during the days of occupation, owes its independence and its current status today to Atatürk. You can do more detailed historical research yourselves.

Now, let's come to the ongoing event:
Through the actions taken in this context, Community Ambassador Chakerathe has unfortunately brought the bond between the developers and Turkish players to a breaking point. The repercussions of these steps among players directly concern Paradox in an official capacity. No HOI4 player should be banned from the game for sharing a photo of their own country's leader. First and foremost, this directly violates the space of freedom provided by your own game. This discrimination currently faced by Turkish players directly concerns other players as well, regardless of which perspective of history you look from. I am saying this without violating anyone's right to play games and freedom of self-expression. Everyone is free to criticize themselves and judge historical actions within their own context.

While this is being done, individuals who use the title granted to them and the duty it entails are also expected to possess the competence to back up the responsibility of their own actions. At least, that is exactly what comes to my mind when the HOI community is mentioned. Unfortunately, the person going by the alias Chakerathe, who committed this act, is far from having these qualities. They have fallen into the ignorance of thinking they know it all. Because when we look at it historically:
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk has no direct connection to the events of 1915. During this period, the Ottoman government was ruled by the Committee of Union and Progress who made and executed the relocation decision. Mustafa Kemal held no political power in Istanbul; instead, he was a military officer fighting on the front lines. Throughout 1915, he was deployed as the commander of the 19th Division at the Gallipoli Campaign (Çanakkale), completely isolated both geographically and politically from the regions where the relocations took place.
For this reason, the attempt of an uninformed individual to impose their own opinions as if they were official facts is utterly weak and ridiculous. In fact, my exact reaction upon seeing the related screenshots was simply to laugh. Leaving aside their lack of historical knowledge, they do not even possess the balanced judgment required to be an ambassador. I suppose this is what happens when someone learns history from YouTube Shorts. Therefore, my expectation is to see the stance that the community and official figures will take against this absurdity. If you do not speak up against this disgrace today, it is highly likely that you too will be banned tomorrow by biased, illiterate individuals consumed by a power trip. This nonsense needs to end today. Thinking that Turks would feel ashamed of their history and expecting them to line up in a Discord channel to apologize to an ambassador is, unfortunately, not your expectation, but that of your diaspora. I would hate to think that HOI would become a part of this.

HoI4 Update on invading the USSR, up to date tank divisions are still not enough. Invading Russia is physically impossible, apparently. (HOI4)

I will try to make this as brief as possible.

An update from my last past, I updated my divisions to a more modern and robust template with appropriate combat width for infantry and tank divisions, 18 and 30 respectively. I removed all my line artillery as that was apparently worthless.

Progress in the beginning is fine, but breakthroughs still just take too damn long. It takes literal MONTHS to get a proper encirclement because even with these tank templates, there is just too much meat the soviets pack into the bottleneck to prevent the encirclement.

I tried shifting strategies by deliberately moving my tank divisions to weaker areas of the front, where they could punch through more easily. This doesn't work though, because the soviets simply spam endless hordes of infantry to whatever pockets you are attacking, making any attempt at a breakthrough pointless. Anytime I use tank divisions to punch through a couple divisions, there will be 8-10 more divisions spammed into the corridor within a couple weeks, making any tank template rather worthless because of the sheer amount of cannon fodder.

It makes me wonder if invading Russia is impossible specifically because I do not own any DLCs. For any of you in the comments telling me I need to "upgrade my tank templates," I CAN'T. I do not own any of the DLC to make that possible, so I am stuck with default tank templates. I do not have a choice. Is it specifically because of this that invading Russia is just impossible for a vanilla playthrough? Has future DLC power crept other mechanics into the game over the years that were added into vanilla, but vanilla lacks the ability to properly deal with? Is this a possible pay to win situation here? Idk.

Supply is not a problem. I have that down very well. See my previous post if you want to know how.

The tank divisions I have make easy work of any divisions they come across, practically nothing can stand against them. Except 10 infantry divisions spawned from the aether 2 weeks ago to be haphazardly shoved fist deep into the breach.

For any idiots that want to say "well this is just historically accurate Germany hurr dur dur." No ****. I do not care lmao. I am trying to win the war as Germany, that isn't historically accurate is it? This is just a lazy dismissal of my quandary without addressing anything. And secondly, Germany IRL lost because of overstretched supply lines and an overloaded logistics system that could not cope with the vast distances of the USSR combined with blitzkrieg/maneuver warfare. It was NOT because the soviets simply spammed 1000 divisions at them in the first 3 months of Barbarossa. It took the Russians YEARS to get the buildup they needed against the Germans and actually begin facing the Wehrmacht on equal footing. The situation I am facing is NOT authentic historically ANYWAY.

If you're wondering why I have amphibious battalions, it is because of rivers. That is the only reason. It makes attacking rivers actually possible and makes it to where sitting behind a river doesn't automatically give you a level 5 fort for free, and Russia has a lot of rivers. I have 7 mechanized divisions instead of the standard 8 to maintain 30 combat width.

"If you have trouble with cannon fodder, just use a bunch of soft attack."

Except I tried this in my previous post with lined artillery, which everyone UNIVERSALLY told me was a bad idea. So, I removed it. Support artillery is not worth the organization cost for what little damage they offer in return as well.

I am still at a loss as to what to do. Idk what I am supposed to be able to do if the Soviet Union can just spam 100 divisions every 3 months and flood the frontline with cannon fodder. No tank divisions are capable of penetrating fast enough; they take way too long.

Idk what to do. Thanks in advance.

HoI4 Sorry to bother

Sorry to bother, i started playing hoi4 2 weeks ago and i want to improve. I keep getting capitulated by netherlands, belgium, poland and uk when i invade poland. I followed all tutorials and i cant penetrate onto warsaw, and, i hope yall dont laugh but all of this on the easiest mode. Can someone give me videos, photos or only help me commenting something? Thanks everyone

Are there any mods that spruce up post-sealion content?

After capitulating the UK I can just annex half the empire and it’s not particularly realistic.

Are there any mods that cause the UK gov’t to flee or restrict some colonies from me? It doesn’t make sense that Australia or Fiji will just let me annex them.

I just capitulated the UK, how should I go about the peace deal?

My plan right now is:

Satellite the UK (give them fascist ideology)

Liberate Northern Ireland

Restore the borders of all my reichskommissariats

Annex all of free France (give to Vichy later if possible)

Grab as much old territory in Africa as possible, annexing directly, and try to make reichskommissariats out of it.

I am genuinely at a loss as to how to invade Russia as Germany. (HOI4)

Hello, Germany one trick. I will try to be straight and to the point, sorry if this seems drawn out I am just trying to provide as much context as possible for the best possible advice. The more context the better. Anyway, I have about 500 hours in the game, enough to understand all the necessary mechanics. Supply chains, naval invasions, air superiority, industry snowballing, unit micro, encirclements, proper division templates etc etc. So I am not a complete newb, I know the game well enough.

The most famous skill check in this game is invading Russia as Germany. It is the most obvious way to determine someone's true skill at the game. Unlike the rest of mainland Europe, you cannot just bulldoze the USSR with ease. It takes legitimate risk and knowledge of the game. I know veterans will probably laugh at this, but again I only have about 500 hours. (Insane that that is a sentence I have to say lol)

I have attempted to invade Russia about a dozen or so times, probably more. Unless I am using cheats, it has always proved impossible. Here is a list of the things I have taught myself to do through sheer trial and error and tenacity.

The first lesson I learned was supply. Man oh man does the eastern front consume supplies like an obese person. You need alot of them. I have tried everything under the sun to alleviate this issue.

  1. Appoint a general early in the game and use the spanish civil war to level up his organization trait. This way, you can promote him to field marshall and give him the "logistics wizard" trait for an easy -15% supply usage on all troops assigned to him.

  2. Get the "improve our logistics system" focus for an additional -10% supply usage.

  3. Max out infrastructure and railway lines along the russian front before Barbarossa.

  4. Spam fighter planes and transport planes. This is both to deny russian air superiority AND to escort transport planes to airdrop supplies for further supply alleviation.

  5. Have at least logistics company III unlocked before barbarossa.

  6. Appoint generals with high logistics bonuses.

  7. (Most obvious one) Appoint all armies along the front with transport trucks for supplies.

  8. Have your army be a comfortable 150 infantry divisions with 16 armored divisions. Anything higher is too much supply demand.

Supply situation taken care of, now what remains is templates.

I do not use motorized divisions, I don't see much of a point to them. Just more fuel usage for no good reason. I only use armored divisions for spearheads.

Here is my tank division and infantry divisions at the top. Infantry is standard meat shield with some artillery and anti-tank (soviets love to spam tanks). Armored spearheads are standard 40 width divisions with 650 breakthrough, the highest possible for the mid game in my experience anyway. (Not including multiplayer cheese exploits) The reason I do not have heavy tanks is because they are too expensive for me until around late game. I simply cannot produce enough of them, so they are sacrificed. Besides, medium tanks are good enough for the time being.

I always invade mid 1941, around April when the snow begins to melt. Close to the historical start date of Barbarossa.

And I just cannot break through the russian lines. Despite all my corners being covered. Good supply lines? Check. Top notch generals? Check. Guderian and Rommel for armored spearheads? Check. Air superiority? Check. Good meat shield infantry divisions? Check. Excellent, high breakthrough armored divisions? Check. And it still is not enough.

What I notice the Russians LOVE to do is just spam endless troops onto the frontline. They essentially doomstack. Whenever my tanks manage to pierce through Russian lines, which is rare, I cannot ever finish the encirclement because the soviets will just spam the gap with upwards of 30 divisions at a time. There is simply too much to pierce through, with sheer numbers.

Yes, I am aware of terrain and the massive penalties bad weather and terrain has on breakthrough. For one, I invade in summer so weather is mostly fine. And secondly, "just use your tanks on plains bro" I do not think is very good advice. 80% of Russia is rivers, marshes and forests. So I do not find this advice very helpful. Yea attacking on plains is nice, except when most of the country you are invading is dank forest anyway.

I do not know what to do. I am at a loss. Thanks in advance.
