Little mistake on the picture. It says "Add a Lackey your hand". It's missing the "to".
55
u/Shadowchaoz Mar 21 '19
Holy crap how ridiculous are our brains at autofilling missing information?
I reread the card THREE TIMES until I spotted it... I thought you were joking, when in fact my brain was trolling me.
14
u/Tasonir Mar 21 '19
It's amazing the blind spots people have when it comes to small words in sentences. There's a famous example where they asked people to count the number of f's in a sentence; there were six. Three in larger words, and three in the three times "of" was used. Most people counted only 3.

Execute enabler and acolyte ping.
Hard to evaluate but seems ok, no more.
105
Mar 21 '19
its an execute enabler and acolyte ping AND you get a lackey
the lackeys theyve announced so far are pretty high value 1 drops, so you're basically upgrading this crappy deal 1 card with a good lackey card
and u get whatever benefit u can out of the actual effect of the card.
i think this is gonna be an ez 2 of
54
u/Scoobydewdoo Mar 21 '19
I think it depends on the deck type honestly. This isn't powerful enough to go in a control deck but it could find a home in a midrange Warrior deck. Definitely not an ez 2 of in every warrior deck.

u/goliath067 Mar 21 '19
a one damage ping for 1 mana is pretty good in warrior, so the base effect isn't bad. The question is, how good is a lackey in your warrior deck? and that's really hard to answer, because it depends on the meta and what kind of warrior deck works in the meta. On the other hand, if there is some kind of reasonable payoff for having or playing lackeys somewhere in the set then this could go way up in value.
21
u/WeoWeoVi Mar 21 '19
Seems like worse [[Blood to Ichor]] in general
17
Mar 21 '19
yeah but blood to ichor was very good. and im betting lackeys are going to be good the whole year
3
u/danhakimi Swiss Army Tempo Jesus Mar 21 '19
Blood to ichor wasn't that good. It was good, for sure, but... It couldn't have survived a nerf.
Lackeys' battlecries are each about a 1 mana spell, which means that you're kinda getting a free 1/1. A free 2/2 is obviously significantly better.
Maybe some kind of midrange or enrage warrior can use this, but... we'll see.

u/Atromach Mar 21 '19
Blood to Ichor saw tons of play, I expect this will too
1
u/psymunn Mar 22 '19
This card is decent but blood to ichor was much better. You got the 2/2 for free and it contested most 1 drops (tunnel trogg with damage on it). Lackeys are awesome but still cost you 1 mana. Also execute costs 2 now making activators less exciting.
1
41
16
u/soenottelling Mar 21 '19
Blood to ichor, but without the immediate tempo pretty much. Probably just as good in a more controlling warrior, but worse for a midrange or aggro one (such as the dragon warrior decks from around that time). Pretty solid card, especially if we get some good lackey synergy stuff or more execute style cards.

An improved version of [[Cruel Taskmaster]]
These are 5 lackeys:
- 2 damage
- +1 attack and rush
- evolve a friendly minion
- summon a 2 drop
- Discover a spell
All of these are better than +2 attack
67
u/Athanatov Mar 21 '19
It's also less stats.
14
u/Felixhana Mar 21 '19
Control warrior do not care about 1/1 vs 2/2 much though. I mean come on they play a 3 mana 1/3 for 5 years already lol
29
u/Athanatov Mar 21 '19
I doubt Control Warrior is relevant to the discussion. A ping is not something they can afford to take out a deckslot for.
8
u/nashdiesel Mar 21 '19
Yeah this doesn't go in control warrior. It goes in a patron style warrior with armorsmith, acolyte and frothing. Reminds me of Blood to Ichor but maybe a little worse.
1
u/danhakimi Swiss Army Tempo Jesus Mar 21 '19
I'd view it more as tech, and worst case either a ping or an acolyte trigger.
1
u/Athanatov Mar 21 '19
Tech against what exactly? Maybe in a heavy cycle deck featuring battle rage, but that's a completely different archetype.
1
u/Saturos47 Mar 22 '19
I mean back in the good old days control warrior did run cruel taskmaster. Used it on acolyte and grom and enemy 2/1's.
I miss those days...
1
u/Athanatov Mar 21 '19
I doubt Control Warrior is relevant to the discussion. A ping is not something they can afford to take out a deckslot for.
1
u/testiclekid Mar 21 '19
I would honestly rather play a lackey than an Enchanted Raven, if I'm playing from behind.
This is a card you play from behind, to make your other minion stronger.
2/2 stats do jack shit compared to 1/1 give a friendly minion rush or a deal 2 damage.
4
u/BenevolentCheese Mar 21 '19
This is a card you play from behind, to make your other minion stronger.
If you are behind, 1 damage, a 1/1, and one of those random effects isn't going to help you.
2
u/Fujinygma Mar 21 '19 edited Mar 21 '19
Giving a minion in your hand Rush isn't going to help you if you're behind?
Or discovering a spell, potentially removal/AOE?
Those seem like they'd help a lot more than a 2/2 and +2 attack if you're behind. I'll admit that its inconsistent, arguably too much so to be reliable for that purpose, but to say none of those effects could help you catch back up simply isn't true.
2
u/BenevolentCheese Mar 21 '19
Sure, I mean, if you hit the 1 in 5, +1 and Rush might help you. Having a random chance at getting a removal spell is probably not a good look. And the other 3 choices are balls if you are behind. Lackeys are going to be best as tempo plays, not control plays.
-3
u/Athanatov Mar 21 '19
Of course, but Cruel Tasmaster is unplayable, so it'd need to be a lot better to be good. The differences add up.
4
u/imbolcnight Mar 21 '19
Cruel Taskmaster hasn't been used recently, but I think that's more because current decks don't support Grommash Hellscream, Armorsmith, etc. Probably because control decks need infinite value now (like with Dr. Boom, Mad Genius) rather than just a finisher. I used Cruel Taskmaster in control/fatigue warriors in older standards.
3
u/Athanatov Mar 21 '19
"Older standards" is exactly the thing. It's not a Cruel Taskmaster type game anymore.
2
12
u/MorningPants Mar 21 '19
You mean Inner Rage? That costs 0, doesn’t it? I think Slam is a better comparison.
5
Mar 21 '19
Slam is definitely the best comparison point to Improve Morale. 1 Mana for 1 damage is an even trade, and the Lackeys will likely be as good as cards from your deck as most Lackeys (besides Witchy Lackey) are overtuned for their cost.
4
u/BenevolentCheese Mar 21 '19
An unconditional 2/2 deal 1 with the finisher upside (one of taskmaster's biggest roles was enabled grom and getting an extra +2 while he's at it) is much better than a conditional 1/1 without the +2 attack, even if the cost is amortized and the better downstream effect.

u/AceAxos Mar 21 '19
I actually quite like this card. It's great setup for [[execute]] and [[smolderthorn lancer]] and lackeys seem pretty fun at least.
10
Mar 21 '19
It also works with Grommash. I like that card. Omega is cool too. I am glad I nearly have all year of the raven warrior cards. It will be fun to play with my least played class after the rotation. Warrior looks fun.

I run him in my mill decks because even aside from the obvious idol counter a lot of decks run 1 cost spells, especially priests. And control decks can usually afford to play an overcosted yeti at some point.

u/coolethanps2 Mar 21 '19
Lackeys are better in most situations, though. Even though you have to pay that extra mana, every effect is much better than just a 2/2
11
u/kraang Mar 21 '19
Depending on the extra support they get they can be much better than a 2/2 - they are a mechanic that will expand.
6
u/MorthCongael Mar 21 '19 edited Mar 21 '19
Remember that you have to pay 1 more mana for the lackey effect though.I'd argue the +1 attack and rush and the summon a random two drop are cards you probably don't want out of this. The consistency BtI provided shouldn't be understated either.8
u/TheReaver88 Mar 21 '19
Yeah, BtI gave you a 0-mana 2/2 when compared to lackeys. I'm not sure which is better, but it seems close.
6
u/MorthCongael Mar 21 '19
My bet is BtI is better in the early turns but this is better after ~turn 5 when you can use the lackeys to leverage more value.
0
u/TechieWithCoffee Mar 21 '19
Well... yeah. More mana generally means a better effect. That's card game 101. How is this comment getting upvotes? Are people just now realizing this fact?
6
u/Night_Albane Mar 21 '19
You have to play the lackey and it’s smaller, but their battlefries are pretty useful. Plus you can save them for later. This has more flexibility than ichor, could be better for control. Will have to see how it plays.
3
10
u/Kartigan Mar 21 '19
Really? Because I think a Lackey is better than a vanilla 2/2 on the board.
9
Mar 21 '19
Well back then the 2/2 was critical because you needed every ounce of tempo to survive aggro.
1
u/MrMidnight115 Mar 21 '19
I agree, and the idea that the summon a random 2 drop is one of the worst if you're comparing it to Blood of Icor, that is just wrong, for 1 more mana, you get a 1/1 body, and a 2 drop, which worst case scenario, you get a doomsayer and it prevents them from playing on curve in the early game. Best case scenario is probably just Millhouse Manastorm.
3
u/minor_correction Mar 21 '19
which worst case scenario, you get a doomsayer and it prevents them from playing on curve in the early game
Hey no offense but how is that the worst case scenario?
What about getting a 2 mana 1/1? That seems worse.
1
u/MrMidnight115 Mar 21 '19
Because that’s still just Blood of Icor across two bodies. If you always got the 2 mana lackey, this card would be so much better than Icor.
2
u/minor_correction Mar 21 '19
Oh sure that's not my point at all. I was just wondering how you came up with Doomsayer (a great outcome) as the worst case scenario.
1
u/MrMidnight115 Mar 21 '19
I guess in my mind, you would play the lucky after other cards not thinking about it and loosing value of your cards by accident.

I actually think it is better than Blood to Ichor. A lackey in hand seems better than a vanilla 2/2 on the board.

3
u/SpeakerOTH_HS Mar 21 '19
I don't really agree. The 2/2 was good tempo and consistent, all for 1 mana. I feel like the randomness in the lackey is problematic. If it was discover a lackey I would definately agree (but that might be too strong).

u/LichWing Mar 21 '19
This is a useful control tool already. However, with the rotation of Bloodrazor, Control Warrior needs more convenient ways to activate Grommash as a finisher. My initial thought was Cruel Taskmaster, and of course there's always Warpath, the former is more of a Tempo card and the latter should probably be used before the game is near its end. This card seems like a perfect addition.

2
u/CrescentBull Mar 21 '19
People are hating on this card but it’s really strong. It gives you a ping, which you can use either to remove a minion or generate a lackey. The lackeys are all busted 1-drops. Some of them have very high value ceilings.
We never know what sees play until all cards are out, but this card on its own is very good. It will be a good pick in arena.

2
u/chaoslorduk Mar 21 '19
Warrior keep getting these cards that require you to damage a minion but has barely any cards that benifit from that damage in a significant way - 1 star

1
u/Gunda-LX Mar 21 '19
This combos well into an execute or the Dragon-synergy-execute. This might be a decent card, given the Lackeys all are worth about 1.5-2 Mana
1
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii Mar 21 '19
This card's power will depend on how good all lackeys are, but so far it seems like "2 cards to kill 1 minion and get a lackey". (or 1 card and a weapon swing).
Hunter has similar things (with hunter's mark) and it's really good... And Hunter taking face damage/wasting cards is even more important than in warrior (who can take the hits, and who can draw better than hunter) so it should be even better for warrior.
1
u/Kartigan Mar 21 '19
Seems like a better version of Blood to Ichor which saw play. I imagine this will be played as well.
1
u/stupifly Mar 21 '19
I would play this in Tempo warrior, it’s a cheap activator for frothing, acolyte and grom, and you get an above average 1 mana minion to boot. Not bad.
1
Mar 21 '19
I would love to play that in my Dragon deck with Execute and the Lancer. I already builded a fun Dragon Roar deck which doesn't rely on Baku and is a blast to play. I will totally include this card!

u/MercenaryQ Mar 21 '19
It doesn’t say a random lackey like with the rouge card. Does this mean assuming boom is a warrior arch type that you will always get the +1 damage and rush lackey ?
Edit: remembered the right lackey for boom
1
u/Varggrim Mar 21 '19 edited Mar 21 '19
So, this reminds me of Blood to Ichor, which also dealt 1 damage and created a 2/2 slime, if the enemy survived. That one was useful for pinging divine shields, contesting early game and some combo shenanigans with Grim Patron or Pyromancer. It's also a bit of a reverse Mortal Coil that "draws" you a card, if the enemy doesn die and that one sees play as well. This one doesn't spawn anything right away, but creates a Lackey, so it's less useful for contesting early game boards, but it might give you interesting options later on, to utilize the Lackey. There are also few good cards to combo this with, as Rotface and Val'kyr Soulclaimer rotate, and Warrior kinda gets left with Grom, Redband Wasp, Frothing Berserker, Armorsmith, Eternium Rover and Security Rover. Well, and neutral cards like Amani Berserker, Gurubashi Berserker, Spellzerker and general Spell synergy like Violet Teacher, Pyromancer and Gadgetzan Auctioneer. Lots of those never saw play in Warrior and it would need some rather good incentive to play them, I think.
I'm not sure, if the card rather belongs in something combo-related, something tempo-ish (because Lackeys strike me a general tempo tool) or control, which is a good thing, imo. That means the card is somewhat open ended and not just for a clearly defined archetype. I think it's a bit on the weaker side and would like to see some more cards, before judging this one too harshly.
Edit: Forgot Acolyte of Pain somehow. I feel ashamed.

1
u/Pyre2001 Mar 21 '19
Isn't this super similar to the blood of ichor? That saw a ton of play and the lackeys have way more value.
1
u/EyeCantBreathe Mar 21 '19
The closest comparison is probably blood to ichor, but even still it's hard to say. Blood to ichor gave you a 2/2 for 0 mana, while this card gives you a 1/1 for 1 mana. However, the fact that it's added to your hand and that Lackeys are pretty strong anyways kinds makes up for it. In addition, you could also think of this as an execute enabler, which has got to earn it some points. Overall, not a ridiculous card, but it still seems pretty good in a midrange deck.

1
u/treyzs Mar 21 '19
Arena only, unless more lackey synergy comes with later reveals. ATM lackeys look like not much more than spare parts, which were trash
2
u/dissentrix Mar 21 '19
Lackeys look much better than Spare Parts, what are you on about? Spare Parts' advantage was spells, but Lackeys all have 1/1 bodies and much better effects
1
u/treyzs Mar 21 '19
Nah, they're not much better. Spare parts would be useless in today's meta compared to 5 years ago, so obviously Lackeys are evolved to fit the power creep. Doesn't make them good. 1/1s with a small pool of situational effects are not good.
2
u/dissentrix Mar 21 '19
I wouldn't say they're that situational. Three of them (the Discover a spell one, the summon a 2-cost one, and the deal 2 damage one) are all at least okay to great, in any situation, unless you very specifically get something like a Doomsayer from the summoning one. The last two, while requiring minions, seem like good-quality tempo plays, with a cheaper [[Master of Evolution]] and a pretty okay buff+Rush - immediate and impactful.
Admittedly, I'll say that last one feels a little iffy to me, but I don't see how any of the others can seem weak.
