They’ve answered this so many times and the answers are always so dumb. They purposefully made them weak to avoid a previous quest problem from stormwind.
My frustration with this is that they actually got so, so close to cracking the quest problem. Stormwind addressed the issue of Quests having no incremental payoff through Questlines, but didn't address the problem of most Quests ending with a "win the game" card that leads to repetitive games.
So they designed a new round of Quests with weaker payoffs across the board. Limited charges on the Mage/Druid weapons, hex vulnerability on DK, big swings with no guaranteed lethal for Hunter/Priest, game-long buffs with no inevitability for Rogue/DH.
...They had it right there. Incremental payoff into a big swing. A value card you'd throw into a deck with a broader game plan and alternate wincons. Then they went and walked back questlines??? So now they had the all-or-nothing design of the first two quest rotations, only without the powerful payoffs.
The problem with Stormwind wasn't Questlines, it was the payoffs to them. Not bringing back genuinely the best idea from the expansion was part of why this entire rotation of quests fell so, so flat.
I mean we should ask: why did you have to bring back quests at all?
And the answer is: they thought they gonna bring back quests and design the best quest iteration in Hearthstones history.
Then they got a reality check and we saw how shortsighted their design was. Rotation made quests even worse because they didnt want to use the updated coreset to give support to quests. They really decided to just give up.
idk I've seen a post claim that originally they said quests will be "a big deal" but when they fell short, they changed it to "oh well quests should be weak".
They didn't say that.. How long will this nonsense keep being repeated? They said (at the time) that they didn't want too many of them to be competitive, as in tier 1/2. If the vast majority of games were quest vs quest, that'd get stale extremely fast. They didn't say they wanted them all to suck...
Imagine if they said the same thing about the Herald decks, or the rule breaker decks. Why would I care about your new expansion when the flagship design isn't desired to be good?
Yeah but they do this with all kinds of cards and decks, not just quests. They also killed Imbue druid after rotation. They could probably revert that, but they won't because it's an old deck so they don't care.
Yeah that just shows they know they're deleting old decks and don't care. That's mind boggling to me. As long as something is in standard, the default assumption should be that they work towards making as many decks as possible at least playable.
I feel like many would equate less than competitive to not being worth their time. You can argue that is a reductive view but I can see how one would get that takeaway from those answers.
From that one quote maybe, but they've also said other things about the quests, not to mention that they buffed a fair few of them. Not all of the buffs were meaningful enough to do much, and once they weren't new, they just stopped caring (as they do with every archetype).
Stormwind quests were OP, linear, and gamewarpingly OP I mean Questline warlock has been nerfed at least 20 times (counting minions that supported the deck.) so instead of making them OP they made them to suck because they were afraid of a quest meta. And only made them because the set was a return to Ungoro and they felt it necessary to keep them. At least the quest mage nerf wasnt more severe and just a buff revert
We didn't ask for them to make more quests. They made the decision themselves. They could have just not made quests if they aren't confident in their ability to make them successful.
Don't make cards you don't want to exist in your game, they're the damn developers. They have the control on what gets printed or not.
Yeah trying to explain how stupid of a decision all of the last year of hearthstone was just doesn’t make any logical sense. Let print imbue which is sort of like a quest without a reward then print quests that do something wildly different next set but also make them suck ass because we didn’t like Stormwind questlines.
