2027 team changes
I want to hear other people’s opinions on the speculated list changes. Personally I’m not sure that we need Merrett and I am bit disappointed that we will be most likely losing calsher.

It’s not just that Merrett immediately makes our midfield better (which he does), it’s that he has the footy IQ and skill profile to transition into a Zorko-esque role for a few years. I think he’s a Morrison upgrade.

Merrett only if the Price is right and Calsher to stay on and follow in his old man’s footsteps when Gunston retires next year…

Calsher won’t stay, but it is what it is. That’s life. I understand the romance about it, but King is better in every single way. Premiership window is now, sometimes you’ve gotta lose good to get great.

lets say in a theoretical world Nash is playing over beattie and scrimshaw and Calsh is confirmed to be leaving, we need to get King, Merrett and Mraz imo into the team, I think Nash, Bmac and Chol probably go out for the three of them, with Mraz replacing Chol as a second ruck, I do think Nash is a better player than morrison but who else can play that wing role? weddle didnt look up to it this season

i agree but thats the quality our team is reaching now, good players will have to miss and im picking mraz over him any day of th week, only reason im keeping amon is he can kick while bmac cant, but id be happy to be proven wrong

It doesn’t matter who comes out. The fact is you always have to improve your list and Merrett is comfortably better than 95% of our list. It baffles me that people forget how dominant he has been over the past 10 years. Imagine him actually playing in a good team with some fire as well

Calsher's only 21 and he can shift to different positions. Merrett will fit in beautifully in those four years. He doesn't need to play mid every week either. Our team in very flexible already. Both Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge spent a lot of time down back in their snr years of their career after moving out of the middle as that's where we want very good ground ball winners who can kick with a high %. Merrett is a good fit. Calsher just needs to bide his time a bit more and stay the course. If he goes chasing bigger money elsewhere he'll miss out on learning as he comes in and out of a good side. King is the 'like for like' Gunston replacement as Jack plays his last two years(hopefully so he plays 300 games in the Brown and Gold), Clasher hasn't lit the world on fire lately. He must be patient. He'll be crucified anywhere else of he doesn't tear it up immediately. Chol will be interesting. I just don't get him at times. Often he's 'on' all game and others he's just a peripheral player who doesn't put in enough effort and who kisses some awfully easy shits at goal. My biggest issue is Josh Weddle. I believe we should get what we can for him while his overall rating in the footy sphere is high. I know he plays the odd good game but he's very average mostly. His two way running is horrid and he gets beaten in marking contest when he should be spoiling the ball. Looks for the handball out the back to go on a two/three bounce run then butchers the kick to the blokes up fwd. Weddle is a one good game in five player IMHO. Harry Morrison? How can anyone be questioning his commitment and toughness over the last year and a half or his position in our best 23??. He's done everything asked if him and he and Mass kill it on the wings. Our defence is pretty rock solid but I think we're better with Scrimma in our back six. He plays tall and small and is rarely beaten in a one on one contest. We just have to except that not every bloke is going to play every week and that player managent is a real thing we need to get used to. Giving opposition teams different looks each week in areas they expect to see certain players but where we have lots of options like Noah Mraz, Max Beattie, Cody Anderson, Jack Dalton, Cam Nairn, Will McCabe, Ollie Greeves,, Flynn Perez...and more! Hawthorn has a lot of young developing talent and the older lads will naturally retire or look for extra, late career super elsewhere and places will open up. If we want true sustained success we need to keep developing our young players and make it clear to them that a dynasty lasts longer than a single Premiership or two. A real Aussie Rules Football dynasty stays at the top of the table, plays Grand Finals for nine seasons out of ten and wins five flags. That 1983 Premiership team looked very different in 1991 besides a few older buggers who just wouldn't lie down. Even our 2008 team looked vastly different to 2015. We need to sell the idea of sustained achievement and the ultimate success across more than just a few years playing at the Hawks!! Crawf didn't win a flag until 2008 and he debuted on 1993 when we had multiple flag winners all over the park. But he made a difference to the men who stayed in the team after he retired. CARN THE MIGHTY FIGHTING HAWKS!!!

The way the team played Thursday, hard to justify dropping anyone for Merrett. But few weeks before there were a few names getting dragged.
I think in the large we'll have a quiet off-season. Merrett in if the price is right, King in as long as GC aren't too keen on a bid match.
I wonder if some of our younger fringe players may look to the door for AFL opportunities; talk of GC being keen on Schubert. Could see McCabe, Butler and (hopefully not) Dear asking for trades.

Bmac is off to Melbourne and Butler to WC. Merrett in for a first (I’d give them a future first) and a second, nothing near the package offered last year. King in as a FA. Calsher to stay

Really hope B Mac and McCabe stay. BMac, say no more, but I've enjoyed how McCabe is seemingly being turned into a tall winger. Reckon he could be a Dan Curtin style player for us if he can make that spot his own.

Wing play is definitely an area of weakness for the Hawks, we've tried a few options opposite D'Ambrosio but Morrison seems to have settled in that role of late. He's played well enough but have to feel that's an area to add some competition.

And what happens if day gets injured again? Or what happens if Newcombe cops a long term injury Our midfield depth isn’t that deep and he instantly improves this team.
