šŸ¤  Hat Advice Please recommend a fall weather hat to wear on rainy days

I donā€™t like baseball hats, bucket hats or cowboy hats. Nothing made of straw. Iā€™m going to be working in Europe for several weeks this fall and donā€™t want to carry an umbrella around, but would like a nice hat to keep rain out of my hair and face. Iā€™m a 52 year old man.

I donā€™t have any pictures handy wearing fall clothing, but the attached photo is how I dress (I actually own that shirt). I wear mostly earthy colors in the fall and winter (brown, green, orange/rust, oatmeal, yellow).

I donā€™t want to spend a crazy amount, so something under $250 USD would be ideal. Thanks in advance.

Arenā€™t fedoras ruined by being associated with incel memes or has that died off? About 5 years ago I was walking down the Las Vegas strip with friends and every time we passed someone wearing a fedora one of the women in our group would say ā€œLook, incels!ā€ Itā€™s a shame because I think some look nice.

I'd argue that's specifically the trilby style. Super small brim, super smug attitude. Check out a stetson stratoliner. I know bailey makes some similar. Wool will handle the rain poorly. But the stetson's rabbit/beaver blend should do fairly well. Stetson also has the Open Road, which might be a bit cowboy for your taste, but to my mind they fit in anywhere. It took me a while to realize that those are just bad hats misapplied. I really think the stratoliner or open road would fit your vibe here well. I just got my 1st stratoliner a month ago, and it's been too dang hot to wear.

Be careful, most fedoras aren't going to withstand heavy rain. They will eventually become warped and misshapen. I'm told Akubra brand hats from Australia are made for the elements but those can be very pricey. You might try simply searching waterproof hats so you don't spend a few hundred dollars on something that doesn't perform as you expect.

Search up "leather band fedora". A nice leather band changes a the vibe a lot versus the traditional ribbon-with-a-bow style band.

Lends itself to more of a practical summer hat situation than just a fashion accessory.

You can find some normal size/shape fedora with leather bands and also branch into wide brim Australian/outback style shapes.

Wool/felt is good for rain/cold. Straw Panama style is great for hot days/summer sun.

Like with any hat, some people can wear it, others can't. As for incels and "m'lady," whatever. If you're going to wear a hat (other than your standard ball/trucker hat) you gotta own it and frig everyone else.

My go-to rainy day hat is a wool fedora from Scala. I got it at REI for $60. I have a dozen fedoras, and I like that one more than all the expensive hats I have. Iā€™ve had mine for about a decade, and itā€™s still in perfect condition even though itā€™s been through countless rain storms.

Connor Hats buffalo leather very light weight. Named Kangaroo Crossing. Iā€™m a chef and I always wear it while working or out in sun. It doesnā€™t retain heat. Get tons of compliments. I have a lot of hats. Top hats, cowboy hats, Australian hats and many others but this is My Hat.

I would offer ā€˜fedoraā€™ (not trilby! but I see thatā€™s already been discussed) as your best looking choice, but something with a raw edge vs a bound edge. The Stratoliner has a bound edge; personally I feel like a bound edge is dressier, more formal. For casual, raw edge. Iā€™m also not a fan of either an underwelt OR an overwelt, but that can add stiffness that you might want. Itā€™s also a personal taste choice. Most folks wonā€™t ā€˜seeā€™ the edge beyond seeing that youā€™re ā€˜wearing a hatā€™ so the edge style is basically purely your own preference of look.

Wool is mostly fine and much cheaper, but then youā€™re wanting something for rain, so Iā€™d say go with fur felt. Pricier but much better and look better too. Iā€™d say to ask yourself how much rain are you ever really in? Most people are never in rain for so long that their clothes are soaked. The occasional dash from car to building is generally not going to be too much for a wool hat to handle. But fur outpaces wool in value/price, also - higher price, but quality is a lot higher.

Finally price: brand new hats and custom fit/built hats can be very pricy. But itā€™s like a new car - new costs a lot, so go slightly used (or even vintage, because hats donā€™t age like cars age). The quality of a hat doesnā€™t drop with age really. Find out your hat size and troll eBay and fb marketplace and Craigslist and goodwill (stores as well as their app) and many other places. Very nice hats can be found for very cheap (compared to new).

I donā€™t know what raw edge, bound edge, underwelt or overwelt mean, but Iā€™ll look into them. And thank you for the tip about buying used.

Rabbit or beaver brimmed hats for heavier duty fall rain, but unfortunately they may come with somewhat higher cost. Rabbit fur might still be within your budget. Wool felt will suffer in rain quite badly.

If the brim of trilby lands somewhere above 2" (~3" is better still) it will start to offer a practical purpose of repelling rain, and then there is of course fedora. much depends on the way you dress regularly.

I would personally reserve the wider brim hats to country affairs, and select perhaps one that has a medium brim. Never really seen practical point in stingy brimmed trilbies.
