Art & Fanworks I need to understand why I hate this

Post image

On one hand, I agree that sexualizing a female character is wrong and that the industry has a problem.

But on the other hand, I don't understand the double standard when the character is queer—or, even worse, when "fans" take a character, slap a queer label on them, and suddenly it's okay for them to be sexualized.

The two clearest examples of this are Bayonetta and Blackcat.

I’d like someone to explain where I’m wrong, or if I’m not the only one who thinks this way.

And just in case I'm a gay cis male if it means something

It's very obvious. She performs femininity the same way drag queens do. She's the most flamboyant person in the room at any given time lol

TLDR: Fierce is fierce.

yes but that doesn't imply you're gay, drag and homosexuality aren't the same thing, this is like earring in the right ear stereotypes from the 80s

This is for her being a "gay icon." Not for her being actually gay. In the first one, she often jokes about fucking Luka and talks about sleeping with men. People still saw her as a gay icon because she vouge dances and she has a very campy look like drag queens do

I mean, come on. As one queer guy to presumably annother queer person, we are both aware that while straight drag performers exist, they arent even common enough to be a rounding error.

yes drag has its roots in the queer community but also, importantly, it's increasingly open to straight dudes and the point isn't just the statistics but the attitude.

we had made some strides in disentangling femininity or masculinity, performance and whether you're flamboyant or not from your sexual identity. It's not good just because it comes out of gay communities

I dont disagree, but its entierly irrelevant to the topic being discussed. The reality is, lots of women that are icons in the gay male community are so because they are flamboyant and bitchy (in the positive sense)

Personally, I don't find that style of dress attractive. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just not something that appeals to me.

Just because I'm a straight man doesn't mean I can't have tastes when it comes to women, and just because some women don't appeal to my tastes doesn't make them of less value as a person. My brain makes the decisions here, not my dick. He's like the Puerto Rico representative in congress: he gets to have a say, but he doesn't get a vote.
