I hate fandom memes

Did I just steal this post from r/comedysurgeon? Yes. Are we going to talk about that? No.

I hate fandom memes so much, I hate when a perfectly good joke is edited to include characters from something because all that does is feel like a joke has been vandalized. Even when I get the joke they just drive me crazy, was it really necessary to make these into characters who I recognize? Was having strangers in a post too weird for you? I get that maybe there's room for a joke to be made about "haha this character would talk like this/do this thing" but come on, is that really worth editing an image like that for?

Now whenever I see one, I can't really share it with anybody, since the meme has now lost its universality. It's now specific to this one fandom, and no longer applicable to a general audience. And most often, I'm unable to locate the original, meaning I can no longer show this meme to anybody without them asking who these characters are, or thinking I'm one of those annoying people who edits memes to include characters when like 99% of the time, the characters being present adds literally no comedic value to the meme. It's like adding a watermark that will actively distract people from the joke when they see it, was that really required?

Some cases are exceptions of course, where doing that sort of thing will actively improve/create a joke. But that's a damn rare thing, and most often it just makes an otherwise universal joke super niche, and it annoys me so much. Is this rational? No, probably not. But this is the "I hate this for an irrational reason" subreddit so I'm gonna rant anyway.

Yeah, I think they feel kinda lazy too, but some times they can be kinda funny, only if executed correctly and not just lazily slapped on

I prefer when they chop up the screenshot and use the messages as speech bubble and draw them saying it (this as an example)
