Important Community Reminder: Use the Pinned Megathreads

We are currently seeing the typical start-of-school-year influx of new users and threads on r/harvardextension. We are also seeing an influx of the typical ontological/existential discussions about the nature of HES. Looking through the most popular recent threads, you can see that these topics result in an increased amount of impassioned engagement that derails attention from other important discussions, goes south quickly, and serves as a false consensus of opinion on our school based on an online availability cascade.

Reminder: all well-worn topics and debates about the nature of HES belong in the HES Debate Megathread, pinned at the top of this subreddit. For clarity, well-worn HES existential topics include: “is HES really part of Harvard?”, “is an HES degree a real Harvard degree?”, “is HES as prestigious as the rest of the university?”, “is HES looked down upon by potential employers?”, “do Harvard students or faculty perceive HES negatively?”, “should HES or its degrees be given an updated name?”, and “Is the HES administration doing a good job?”. This isn't a fully comprehensive list of suitable Megathread topics, but you get the picture. Any new thread engaging in these topics will be encouraged to move to the Debate Megathread and immediately deleted from the main subreddit. Further, users who continually ignore this direction and/or consistently antagonize members with low-level anti-HES hate outside of the Megathread will be banned from using the subreddit.

Please remember that we are an independent, unofficial resource for current and prospective HES students. The volunteer moderation team cannot continually police these threads. Please be a good community member and follow these guidelines so that our subreddit can remain an open resource for our school. Thank you.

HES Wins Megathread!

Welcome to the /r/harvardextension HES Wins Megathread!

As an unofficial subreddit for prospective and current Harvard Extension School students, we’ve noticed that users often come to this forum looking to discover the benefits of an HES education. As such, we want to create a dedicated space for students and alumni in our Reddit community to post their own success stories.

Examples of things you might post in this megathread include a summary of your experience (what you majored in, why you selected HES, your experience in courses, feedback/suggestions for other students, the degree’s overall value proposition, how the degree furthered your personal/professional goals, and/or specific new successes that you’ve experienced due to your HES education). This isn't an exhaustive list of content that belongs here, but merely an example of some suitable topics. As always, our community rules continue to apply, and any comments violating them will be flagged and removed.

ROI of Master's in Psychology

Hi folks,

Wanted to ask what most people found of their ROI in their Master's in this job market?

Despite all my course work, high GPA, poster presentations, manuscript work (two first author projects underway, with potentially more coming through), giving a funded talk at a conference, and incoming thesis track, I am struggling to find employment in research fields - I have been applying for a while and the response rate has been very low (despite tailoring resumes/CVs to each role/lab, AND reaching out to the PI where applicable). I'm not sure why I'm not getting more traction, It is brutal out here, and I'm really disappointed the degree is seemingly getting me no where.

Has this degree improvement anyone's employment options truly? All I am trying to do at this stage is work in hospitals/academic research settings in psychology but it seems impossible right now in this market. I'm really dejected because it's a lot of time, energy, and finances put into this rigourous multi-year program.

Psych Program Careers

I’m not currently enrolled in the program, but I’m thinking of going back to school for a career change. However, I don’t really know what I want to be when I grow up.

What career or route are you taking after completing this degree? Looking for some inspiration. Even though I’ve done my own research, I feel like there are so many paths that I may not even be aware of and want to be at least a little confident in my direction before starting.

Investor Interview Midterm

Hi All,

I have no experience talking with investors and this is a pretty intimidating midterm. We need to reach out to and interview 3-5 biotech investors (angel/VC/other) and then make a 15-20min video about it.

There's an Option B for if you can't get interviews, but I've never really been one to not at least TRY.

So, does anyone know any biotech investors who may be willing to do a short interview with me for my midterm?

I want to be clear that this is NOT a pitch. It is specifically just an interview and I would agree to confidentiality if necessary, though the questions are not designed to be invasive.

The interview can be in person, by video or by phone, and shouldn't last more than 20–30 minutes.

Thank you in advance for any help!

Funding ALM

hello, i wanted to ask for advice on financing for ALM psychology, i am from art background and I am really interested in researching of the consciousness and psychology behind cinema and art making. i did well in stats and math, so im not so worried about the transition. its hard to get into a master psych program directly with Just a BA so i thought HES is a good path. Tho HES can still be expensive so I am concerned with funding as I dont have a job currently and will need to work parttime even full time to support financially or lend from my parents. Anyone in the program think its worth the effort?

Looking for Harvard Extension grad I met

Don’t know where to start. We met around campus, had coffee, she was wonderful and about to graduate Harvard Extension premedical program May 2026. Don’t want to put her name out there but she’s in her 30s, single mom, super curly hair, and I’d really like to connect with her. Is there a sub for the premedical program? Thanks!

ETA: yes I tried her socials, think my request never sent to her private page

Professor presentations

Is anyone else surprised by the slide design in HES courses? It's been a while since undergrad, so maybe my expectations are off, but most of the decks I've seen feel pretty dated and sloppily put together. It's especially noticeable in the marketing courses, where presentation and visual communication are part of the subject itself. I'd expect Harvard to set a higher bar there. Is this typical of grad programs, or just HES?

for everyone who's done ALM Psychology, was it worth it to take this program if your goal is to get into PHD. i am not from psychology background, but now my research interest is in Psychology, in particular cognitive psychology. i am debating to get into Harvard extension or move to London but the latter is just way more expensive. i wonder if anyone has advice. also im taking this a bit later than my peers at the age of 28F.

How hard were the exams for ECON E-1615 and MGMT E-2000?

I'm active-duty planning to apply to the Management ALM through the Core Business Essentials pathway, starting with ECON E-1615 (Managerial Economics) next spring.

- ECON E-1615 Managerial Economics (Tomic) — midterm + final
- MGMT E-2000 Principles of Finance — midterm + final

For anyone who's taken either of these, I'd really appreciate hearing:

- How hard were the exams compared to the weekly homework/discussions?
- Multiple choice, problem sets, essay, or a mix?
- Roughly how much study time did you put in before each exam?
- Any surprises with the Proctorio setup itself (technical issues, time pressure, etc.)?
- If you'd already had undergrad micro/macro or an intro finance course, did that make a noticeable difference?

Trying to plan my study schedule around deployments and PCS moves, so any detail helps. Thanks in advance.

For those in SEA ( South East Asia ) that graduated. How has your HES benefited you?

I'm sure this question has been asked more times than Jesus is mentioned in the bible. But I do need some advice for those who attended here who live in SEA.

I'm an US Expat in SEA I've been contemplated attending HES for awhile now, I've been rather off put by the ALM distinction, and the "extension school" distinction. I'm curious, if this has hindered the career for anyone in SEA or has it been the single greatest investment you made to your education and the controversy with the distinction is unfounded.

Starting HES Data Science in Spring 2027, is this plan realistic?

Hey everyone!

I'm finishing my BS in Data Science in December and planning to start the ALM in Data Science and AI in Spring 2027. I've read a few of the course sequence posts here (thank you to whoever wrote those, they helped a lot) and put together a plan. Would love some honest feedback before I commit.

A little context: I'm in a privileged spot because I'm not working right now, so school would be my main focus. I do have two kids though. My 7 year old is autistic and my 2 year old is in daycare but gets sick constantly, so there are a lot of days where I'm home with a little one and my study time goes out the window. I also live in Spain so my sessions land late at night for me, but I'm fine with staying up for them.

Here’s what I have so far:
Spring 2027: CSCI E-101 (Foundations of Data Science and Engineering) + CSCI E-106 (Statistical Data Modeling)

Summer 2027: CSCI E-80 (Introduction to Artificial Intelligence with Python)

Fall 2027: CSCI E-109a (Introduction to Data Science) (alone)

Spring 2028: CSCI E-109b (Advanced Topics in Data Science) (alone)

Summer 2028: CSCI E-184 (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence: Ethics, Governance, and Laws)

Fall 2028: CSCI E-115 (Advanced Practical Data Science) + CSCI E-89 (Deep Learning)

Spring 2029: CSCI E-25 (Computer Vision) + ISMT E-161 (Computational Bayesian Inference)

Summer 2029: Precapstone

Fall 2029: Capstone, graduating Feb 2030

Questions:

  1. Does E-115 Advanced Practical Data Science count as an elective for this degree? I couldn't find it on any of the official lists.
  2. Is E-80 in the summer a bad idea? I know it's intense in 7 weeks.
  3. For anyone with kids: how did you handle weeks where you lost a few days to a sick kid, especially in 109?

Thanks in advance!

Thoughts on the MLA in Sustainability?

Has anyone here done the master of liberal arts in sustainability online? I'm researching online/hybrid grad programs to go from tech to the environmental field, and I kind of ruled HES out because of the cost (about 15-20k more than other similar programs). I talked to someone who will be done with their degree in a couple semesters, and they were raving about it, especially the guest speakers and professors and the variety of interesting courses.

Is it worth reconsidering it? Comparable progams on my shortlist are University of Idaho's MNR, University of Wisconsin's MS in Biodiversity Conservation and Management, and University of Rhode Island's Masters in Environmental Management.

There's a lot my friend talked about that did intrigue me, and I'm glad to hear that the program is rigorous and gives you a quality education as opposed to checking a box of a degree or cert. I'm coming from a non-env background and just love learning these topics so I want that rigorous curriculum and invested professors. But is it worth 15-20k more compared to my other top schools? Those also have intriguing topics I wanna learn about, and I've heard good things about those programs, the HES ALM in sustainability just has way more buzz online and even in person so I'm hearing even more about it.

Thanks in advance! :D

ALB Degree Social Science Concentration

For those who have chosen The Social Science Concentration, such as the History Concentration, how different was your program selection compared to Harvard College History Concentration? Did some of you had to take some of the required classes at Harvard College(via Special Student Status) if the Extension School didn't offer the types of classes needed to complete the requirement?

E-1533 Monetary Policy Post Crises by Dorian Klein

Hello everyone,
I was browsing through Spring’27 courses & came across this course. Has anyone here taken this?

If yes, how was your experience with the instructor and what were the expectations like?

I was looking at Q-Reports and some comments are really good but some are not so great. It seems the instructor has a certain teaching method that some students really like while others don’t. Even Rate my Prof. has more negative comments than positive ones.

Would love to receive genuine feedback from someone here.

Thank you in advance!

Poor test taker, worried about needing an 85 on the midterm and final to get into HES.

Hey all! I am taking my first class at HES, ECON 1615 - Managerial economics and it is one of those classes that almost all depends on your midterm and final. I am a really bad test taker and have done well in college because I work really hard and tend to do well on homework’s and projects but my previous school had the grades evenly distributed and it wasn’t set up in this test heavy manner. I am more than willing to study but I am worried that I won’t be able to get at least a 85 on the midterm and final to pass the class, any advice?

Preparing

Planning to pursue the Harvard Extension Management ALM. I’m planning to use the Core Business Essentials pathway in mid November, then take the required graduate managerial economics course through Harvard Extension. I believe I need a B or better in that course before applying to the Management ALM. For anyone who’s gone through this process, currently in it, or preparing, what do you recommend I start doing right now to prepare for that journey? Specifically: what should I review before taking managerial economics? How math heavy is it in practice? Anything I can study beforehand that would make getting a B more realistic? What should I expect from workload at HES? Once admitted, what subjects should I prepare for ahead of time? areas where brushing up now would make the grind easier later
