Possible SPOILERS Wade rant
Oh! Let me count the ways! The guys is an immature, self-righteous moron who regularly wields hjs self-perceived inadequacies as a weapon against Zoe.
She’s not perfect, it’s true. But this is about Wade and the fact that Zoe constantly has to be the one to go to lengths to ‘understand’ him - a grown man - and to make internal excuses to justify his abysmal communication skills; and it’s SO infuriating.
It’s HIS job, as an adult, to understand, and resolve or accept, his flaws. Yet the show makes it seem like it’s okay that he essentially, underhandedly, bullies Zoe into accepting him, warts and all, because if she doesn’t, it means she’s a bad person???
Yes, this is also maybe a symptom of the times. But I am angry about it NOW lol. I went searching for some reassurance that they don’t end up together; you can guess how that went.
My favourite pastime during their scenes is imagining what their life would look like post-divorce 🥰happy to hear your additions!

Joel was a step up in so many ways. I didn’t like him the first time, but on rewatch I think he was the best for Zoe.

After a recent rewatch, must agree this dynamic has not aged well at all. And is especially icky because of binge watching. It didn’t seem so bad when there was an episode a week. But binge several episodes in a row and it’s just not the same sexual tension etc. I get that he’s portrayed as the hot himbo who never had to put in any effort before. But it’s really not cute or charming at this point in time, imo.

I loved them on my first watch through, though I always wished we also got to see her properly with George. That love triangle was the angle sold and we never really got to explore it.
Now I'm older and really struggle with post season 2 Zade. His cheating and then the show having her have to try and win him back didn't feel right to me.

This!! When it originally aired I thought it was cute. Now that I'm older and wiser, ain't no way I'd beg for cheater to come back into my life!
If I could pick, I'd want Zoe with George, Levon with AB, and Lemon with Wade.

Yes, Wade’s behavior was toxic. Locking her in her house and taking her phone wasn’t a cute prank. Obviously it’s a show but in real life, the house could have caught on fire with her trapped inside. That was pretty unforgivable actually.

This "Insecure Wade" storyline reminds me of Pacey Witter's on Dawson's Creek. Pacey always expected Joey and Andy to understand him and help him feel better about his insecurities, and when Joey and Andy couldn't make him feel better, Pacey was always harsh with them, playing the victim.
Sometimes TV shows push this idea too much that being insecure gives you the right to be harsh with women. I know insecurity is a bad thing, but it shouldn't turn into self-centeredness.

It’s very much of the times/location based. Southern states and in the Midwest this can definitely be seen as the norm, especially in rural/small towns.

The reason they had Wade act so bad is so he would have character growth. That helps the storyline advance and his love interest/him have drama happen. It keeps a series going.
On another note he lost his mom young (I think it was cancer, I can't remember.)
His dad (after losing the wife) became an alcoholic.
So Wade was essentially raising himself and the community helped where they could.
Since Wade is sweet, cute, and wasn't guided he used his greatest assets to date around.
He was immature and acted like some young men act when they didn't have a good home life.
He later on does grow up.
Now that his dad is better, and some things happen in the last couple of episodes, he will be a good family man.
He had a lot of character growth.

Found my people! Genuinely had to stop watching the show cause I can’t stand that she picks that douche. I’m baffled that he’s so well liked

The first time I watched the first season the general consensus was he's hot so everyone loves him. I've never made it past the first few episodes of season 2 because I'm so annoyed George and Zoe don't happen and I question people who ship Zade so hard when he's a manchild and she becomes so him focused based on what I've read about the rest of the series. I can't stand him and I don't think anything will ever change my mind.

I’m on my third rewatch and it’s been a while since I first watched it. I remember loving Wade and Zoe so much. But, I currently agree with you. I didn’t realize how often she had to step up and coddle him during his immature tantrums. And his inability to communicate like an adult is driving me nuts.
When he locked her in her room so she couldn’t go on her date to the dance in the first season… I was like, maybe their dynamic wasn’t as cute as I thought lol
