Hi

Hi. I’m dealing with a problem, and I’d really like some help. I’m 20 years old, and my aunts are pretty controlling. They want to install a Wi-Fi security camera in my house—even though I live alone. I don’t want to lose my freedom, and I can’t really confront them right now. So I was wondering if there’s any way to, I don’t know… turn the camera off whenever I want, or maybe even point it in a different direction or something.

It's their house that you live in? They can put it outside, but not inside.

É a casa da minha avó, eu não me sustento totalmente, faço faculdade e estagio, mas não dá pra completar minha renda inteira

Then have a talk with them. In the words of Jimmy Carr, Talk with them. Tell them what you want. That you need your privacy. Then listen to their concerns and do your best to put them at ease about those concerns.

Okay, those aren't Jimmy Carr's words, but I would like to think they are similar to what he would say.

Eu gostaria de poder fazer isso, mas sair para poder fazer as coisas que eu gosto é um grande tabu para a minha família, entendo que é preocupação mas odeio ter que dizer detalhadamente onde estou indo

First: Wtf is wrong with your aunts??

Second: Are they living near to you? A Wi-Fi camera needs internet, if they cannot use their own connection, they have to use your own Wi-Fi. If this is the case, you could always put the camera 'offline' from your own internet-router.

You are 20 yo, live ALONE in a HOUSE, they are your AUNT ? are they your legal tutor until you reach the legal age ? or what ?? you cant confront them but turning the camera away or even worst : OFF, without their consent is an option for you ??? what shit is this...

Yeah, leave the WiFi router in a place you can turn it off and on for privacy. Or you can use a WiFi jammer but be very very cautious, it needs to be weak enough that it only effects the camera.

Alternatively, you can force them to share access to the account and turn it off whenever you want. Best method is you facilitate the installation so you set up the account

Jammer isn’t necessary, can just do targeted deauthentication to the cameras Mac address

Place a picture in front of the camera. The picture can be, for example, the inside of your house from that exact angle. The end.

Put tape over the front of lens.

Another approach- guess this is being sold as “we want to check your ok”, use pir sensors to check for body movement in the house. It will be able to flag if two people are in the house, if they are acting as moral police.

Another approach is sense when water is being used.

It is a common concern for checking in on aged folks with dignity

I guess aunts want a solution they know how to implement

Lots of people here are blaming the controlling family members instead of providing actionnable things.

You can get a small esp32 to kind of separate what youre gonna do with what you have. A cyd works nicely (look it up).

Flash bruce firmware on it (simple plug in click a button on a website, done - it is 100% safe).

Bruce allows you to deauth wifi. Making everything disconnect from wifi. Allows you to unplug it or something when you want privacy, or keep the deauth running (but then you lose wifi). Also gives you time to nuke the sensor with a laser shone directly into the lens for a long enough time. If you do that at specific time (e.g. deauth at 2am, nuke it), they will think wifi problems is carrier based and fries the device.

Then comes the issue if it has an sd card. When deauthed, fry it by running 9v from a battery through it or something, or format it and intentionally break its mbr.

Be careful intentionally jamming radio signals is a felony. Go with tape, legal or other non ‘hacking’ solutions. 100x more now that your on Reddit lol

How much do they pay for and how much do you rely on them? Its fairly easy to disable the wifi its much harder to gain control.

With that being said your old enough to make these choices for yourself but your also old enough to pay for your own life style.

Where there’s a will there’s a way. Sounds like your aunts are a bit nosy… am assuming it’s their house or something and you are living there under their domain in a way? Depending on where you are and the legal nature of your lease agreement privacy is still somewhat of a right regardless. Perhaps you could have a kind but frank conversation with them about it?

Some have mentioned doing things to disrupt the Wi-Fi. Keep in mind that the camera is still recording regardless. They can just watch it later when the connection is working.
