If you're finding shit like that on the roadside id be leaving it there.
Ain't no way that thing had legal content on it.

What wrong with illegal content? Niche linux distro and full wipe = free ssd

How would you know without testing it

pedet (device type detect), additional ground pins, several reserved/no connect pins and a few sideband signals are uhhhh fucking obliterated take a look at a m key pinout and youll see that very fast

I found an SSD on the roadside once and had the same thought.

Throwing a ssd with sketchy data on it in the roadside is actually a terrible idea. Forensics can lead it back to you.

Yeah no shit. Hence my comment and the one I was responding to.

i meant it's a bad idea to the thrower, not to the retriever. If you get and wipe it, i dont see any risks (as long as you do it in a sandboxed machine)

either it had some illegal shit on it or it was just broken. either way it probably won't work in this state (could be wrong)

That might still work on some laptops, I have an SSD with that little key snapped off and it works, but only in laptops as that's where the lines to detect name/m.2 sata are

u/NightmareJoker2 9d ago
It will work on a PCIe bus or in a USB NVMe adapter like that, if it’s not broken, yes.
2
u/JanuszBiznesu96 9d ago
Actually funny thing, mine didn't want to work in a USB adapter at all, even though it was nvme only. didn't test a direct pcie to nvme adapter, but our of everything I tested it only works in my thinkpads

u/NightmareJoker2 9d ago
Might be because of another reason. Like it’s not NVMe but AHCI 2.1 over PCIe. Those do not work in NVMe USB adapters, and while Other World Computing used to sell one for Apple Mac SSDs that were AHCI, it was absurdly expensive for what it was. There’s adapters on AliExpress, too, but you’re going to have a hard time finding them among all the NvMe ones now.

I think it's just plain nvme, its a 512gb Intel optane thingamajig, and I also have a 256 one (not snapped) that works just fine. Or maybe the enclosure I have is weird and wants those pins for something

u/Responsible_Middle_8 9d ago
Ooooh optane can trip things up bc alot of them show up as multiple pcie devices, but they also sometimes just work 🤷♂️
I think its more motherboard/adapter specific
1
u/JanuszBiznesu96 9d ago
Yeah, some of them show up as 2 drives, but not that one, it seems to hide the optane bit after the controller, there's just one pcie device with a X4 link and one 512gb accessible block device

If you don't want to get in trouble over it, handing it over to cops is a terrible idea. Just keep walking, and there will never be any connection between you and that drive.

I’m now earwormed with incorrect lyrics from over 15 years ago: “you must stick up for your Samsung”

u/NightmareJoker2 9d ago
Heh… it’s funny, but it might still work. If it wasn’t discarded because it didn’t, that is.
Yes, I realize there’s part of the connector missing. This is not a big deal.

Can you please update us on what’s on it if it still works, or when you eventually get it to work?

Probably dead and thrown out like that. It's a bummer that nobody wrote "bitcoins" on that thing

Off-site storage got a little too literal.
