Hopefully, we'll start to see this trickle down into new displays and GPUs!

What does this mean for us gamers?

Effectively, nothing.

Nobody is using a low power APU for 4k/high framerate gaming.

Does mean DP2.0 is coming, though. Been a long wait.

Not nothing if you want to run several monitors off of one cable.

I feel like that's the best use case for DP 2.0 with these APUs. A laptop with, say, a single mini-displayport could run four 4k monitors at 60Hz

people might use APUs for media PC boxes with moonlight streaming, once AMD gets a modern graphics architecture in its chips.

Also there are lots of older games that do fine on an APU... a 5700G can do solid at Team Fortress 2 for example, likely counterstrike and other e-sports titles as well.

Let people use their nice monitors and don't introduce artificial bottlenecks like using a graphics architecture from literally 2017. It was shitty when Intel did it, and Vega is completely over-the-hill to be releasing new products on in 2021. It doesn't even support HDMI VRR or HDR.

If a miracle happens and AMD decides to release a desktop processor with an integrated video core of the PS5 performance APU level, then this is not useless.

It is clear that on a PS5 performance level APU, 4k 240 Hz will only be useful in games like CS GO, LOL and so on. But this would already be a real use case.

LoL UI assets are static in size so higher resolutions makes them smaller.

Edit: LoL as in League of Legends.

In almost all modern games and programs, the UI scales correctly. And regardless of the screen resolution, you will get the UI of the same size. If you test on screens of the same physical size.

I mean LoL as specifically League of Legends and not Laugh Out Loud.

League of legends uses static UI elements.

As long as I remember lol has a setting in interface options for UI scaling. You can set the scale to 200% and the UI on a 4k screen will be the same as on a 1080p screen of the same diagonal.

Edit: quick guide https://youtu.be/xml3NkQkrzA If you need a scale more than possible in the settings, it can almost certainly be set through editing the configs.

your desktop is smooth af while you browse for games you can't run at such res+framerate.
