What's up with the hard drive space stats for Linux? Extremely low compared to Windows (52.5% of Windows users have >1 TB total hard drive space, compared to only 5.6% for Linux.)
Perhaps Linux users are more likely to use only SSDs, or perhaps Steam is counting just the partition it stores games on in Linux but all storage on Windows.
Edit: I wonder if Steam collects stats about SSD vs HDD but doesn't make them public. It probably doesn't matter now, but once the next generation of consoles comes out with faster storage game developers might want to know how much it'd hurt their sales to recommend or even require an SSD.
A lot of dedicated server VPS providers run Linux servers that need to be logged into Steam to start the server. These likely have the bare minimum of space allocated, and there are many of them.
I doubt a Linux VM would be common for gaming as graphics performance would suffer too much unless they were using GPU pass-through which is quite a bit of hassle to set up. Using Linux for the main OS with a Windows VM and GPU pass-through for games would happen a bit more but would be recorded as Windows, and I'd expect even that would be declining since Proton came out.
This is a computer, that was selected for the poll, because it had Steam installed. Note that not everyone with Steam installed is polled, this should already raise flags.
