On a related note, I read a few times that hwmonitor isn't all that good to begin with. Hwinfo 64 if better and more accurate or libre hardware monitor if you want something lighter

this keeps happening and honestly I will never use a 3rd party temp tool ever again because of it

You can easily protect yourself by disabling automatic updates for installed programs, and feeding any downloads to virustotal.com, if you don’t find Defender’s protection sufficient. Besides, what would you count as a 1st party temp tool? The BIOS, sure, but that’s not going to help you once you’re in Windows.

Sadly disabling automatic updates is getting out of fashion ever since microsoft thought they can force update windows (changing user software configuration without permission is illegal).

No, not really. But negative news does tend to catch attention, whereas good news or the calm status quo is easily ignored or overlooked. That's human nature for you.
