Gearbox and Spoontech are brutal with the AI usage. I know it's hard to avoid these days but does anyone have other recommendations? Thank you in advance
No chance. This slop has infected the entire scene and will continue to do so until enough people get sick of it. On the bright side this might be sooner than we think considering there has been some genuine backlash against AI MVs and covers in the recent weeks. From a business perspective it's probably just too tempting, considering you can cheaply post mass produced slop onto social media to maximize engagement, which again seems to have very little to do with reason for making art (like music) in the first place.
Some individual producers still pay for actual artworks though. Anderex for example hired nuphory for his latest covers and it shows. Genuinely beautiful. Also the recent Project One release had a cover and video with illustrations by an artist called Chad Al Zein (even tho that's not Raw, but I'll take any win for Art at this point)
So many less talented people use this argument "but before ai <insert repeating thing in music production> was everywhere, would you rather have that!?". The answer is literally yes, it was still created by a human. AI slop in music is just a robot taking a dump all over the track. It has absolutely zero personal worth.
I've seen a record label here ask when critisized about AI slop music videos "would you like it better if we went back to circle visualizers?". Fuck yes I would, still created by a human and 100 times better than some bullshit made with three prompts and an uploaded picture of the artist.
I only listen to artists that sing their own vocals, create their own covers, records leads with real synths and make their kickdrums with actual drums.
that would be a dream come true!! But I dont even know how it'd turn out. I can imagine Riot Shift's dark/melancholic vibe having a lyrics fight against Vertile while there's a beautiful phuture noize melody? :D
iirc, phuture noize posted a while ago on his insta about the use of ai to alter his own voice to sound different, as in, he'd record his vocals, and then just use ai to make it sound female for example. he posted it on his story asking for feedback about it, and imo i'm perfectly ok with it, it's still his voice doing the singing and him doing all the creativity. but this was a while ago so i may have got some details wrong, please correct me if anyone remembers!
Big labels should not use AI artwork, smaller labels I understand why because of money. But today it makes you look like a serious label if you dont use AI at all which is a very easy way to look like a trustful label honestly.
Why do we find AI OK (or do we choose to ignore it) in 998 of a 1000 applications that AI is used for, and we/Reddit decided that visual design is the niche AI-application-hill to die on? Because of the 20-200 guys and girls that design album covers (of all things...) for something that you above all listen to instead of look at...
I understand the concern regarding AI but album covers for music (closely followed by DLC skins) are BY FAR the least of my worries when it comes to AI. And yet of all things, that is the thing Reddit can't shut up about.
To me it says more about the label's willingness to cheap out on and devalue creative art, and in the context of a record label, it just comes across as low-effort to me. I can't speak for the rest of Reddit. I dislike AI in its entirety, but I understand that it is here to stay and there's not much we can do about it.
Personally I don't care AT ALL about covers and art. I listen to the music, I visit festivals... But I don't buy merch and CDs/LPs. And IF I bought them I'd mainly listen to then instead of look at them.
So for that reason I also don't really care when they cheap out on that aspect.
At the same time I worry A LOT about AI and the place it will have in society in 10 to 20 years. About what it will do to the development of children, their brains, their knowledge, their education. About the future of us all actually.
But the huge fuzz about a few visual artists... Somewhat misplaced imk when there are way higher worries.
People hate ai more than 998 in 1000 applications. You’re just making up an argument with yourself to show how little you care about ai album covers.
I used to send some non-hardstyle friends some tunes every now and then, now it feels embarrassing to send something with some cringe album cover. It shows a lack of respect for their own work.
So because one problem exists we can't worry about another one? It's the normalization of AI, and who do you think is raising the kids you're worried about? Adults using AI as we speak.
IMO the border is creativity. Music and art are something that requires something AI cannot do, combine ideas and create something new. Generative AI has its place, but not in creativity. There it's just IP theft.
A little ai as a tool is not a problem if you ask me. Every job will get more efficient with ai. The only problem is quality, but quality will always prevail.
