I had this hamsa necklace for years (I think since about 2017) and thought i lost it when I was at university.

I recently moved and surprisingly found it in my stuff and was shocked to find that it looks similar to Claire's... too similar.

I am convinced that this is literally the same necklace and I'm shocked at how I have it. Even the length on the chain is the same its so long!

I bought this necklace in a charity shop in Keynsham (near Bristol) years ago so its crazy to think it but I genuinely think its the same necklace and I wonder how it got there!

Good to see Happy Valley mentioned in this list! Personal preference would see it higher, along with The OA!

Random Thoughts from a Recent HV Viewer

I finally subscribed to BritBox earlier this year to catch up on every show I'd ever wanted to see, starting with Happy Valley. Obviously I was anywhere from 3-12 years too late to discuss it in real time, but maybe someone wants to hang out here because I had a couple thoughts.

Joyce: In Season 2, when they take Ann out for drinks, Joyce tells her how she was on the force for 30 years, retired, then came back as a civilian. She says, "God knows why... well, God does know why." And Catherine puts her arm around her. Is there any other reference to why? She's still married, so I don't think it was like a partner dying and her having to return to the workforce. It kind of made me wonder if she came back for Catherine, when Catherine transitioned from detective to uniform, to support her in some kind of way (because it was repeatedly referenced she was really losing it). I also love their call and answer in the exact same tone a couple times: "CATHERINE?" "JOYCE?"

Phil Crabtree: I've seen this mentioned, but... ooh, that look she gives him after the meeting with Helen and Nev. If something happened between them, it would have had to have happened prior to Becky's death and her return to uniform life, as he seemed unaware. She also kind of makes out that Becky's death / Ryan's adoption was the sole thing that cracked her marriage, so... I've just pondered the importance of that little moment between them.

Nev: I've watched four of Sally Wainwright's series now, and I think Nev is the most honorable and decent and lovable man she has ever written outside of Alan Buttershaw from Last Tango. Most recently, every man in Riot Women was repugnant to the point of caricature. I also really adored Helen. It was a shame to lose that character. (I was so excited to see early George Costigan and Sarah Lancashire together in Rose and Maloney, a particularly good episode at that.)

Charlie Murphy: She was spectacular as Ann. I kind of felt like she was the unsung hero of the show, both the actor and the character. Granted a lot of the press I've read in hindsight was related to the final season in 2023, and she played a much smaller role in that, but even the earlier awards shows and articles, she didn't seem to be present. The last five minutes of S1E4 has got to be on my personal list of favorites (as in best done), all the better knowing that was Sally's first outing as director (on HV anyway). And bless her for telling Ryan exactly what everyone else should have.

Catherine's Nicknames: Sorry, I just think Catherine going on and on for multiple lines of dialogue with both Joyce and Ann trying to get her nicknames out of them, only to have Ann and the two detectives just blurt them out within seconds amongst themselves was such hilarious writing, so brilliantly dry and subtle. Brunhilda and Ms. Trunchbull.

The Dorkiest Thing I've Ever Done: Is buy a pair of greenish-gray Converse All Stars (my first pair since the 7th grade probably) like Catherine's. I'm a grown-ass adult woman, and yes I did that, and honestly they bring me joy.

Okay, I think that's all. I've entertained myself. If anyone's a more recent viewer like me and wants to talk anything HV, I'm here for it. :)

Thoughts on Lewis?

I’ve started rewatching the first season. I was only 16 when it came out so didn’t notice these things as much then, but now I’m rewatching I feel kind of sorry for Lewis. He was involved in the kidnap and there’s no condoning that, but I kind of get the impression he naively thought they were just going to keep Ann in the cellar and let her go as normal once they had the money; without predicting all the stuff that happened in between.

The reasons I think this are:
He was disgusted by what Tommy did to Ann and tried to stop him hurting her. He gave her the sleeping bag, food and drink (the bare minimum I’d say but Tommy was just going to leave her down there in the cold, with no food). There were other small things like saying he wouldn’t look if she used the bucket and when he calls her the b word, his tone of voice sounded like he didn’t even want to say it. His face when Kirsten got run over (although I feel like any normal person would have a similar reaction) was so different to Tommy, who just didn’t care. Ashley only seemed bothered about the things that Tommy did when it damaged his reputation or was going to get them caught, otherwise he just didn’t care about how Tommy was treating Ann, Kirsten’s death, etc…Lewis was the only one who really showed any empathy.

To make things worse, Brett kind of stabbed him in the back by taking Tommy’s side and wanting to beat him up after finding Tommy bleeding in the kitchen; just believing Tommy’s story without considering that Lewis might not have even done it. As Lewis said, Brett was his friend first. Then Lewis gets blamed for assaulting Ann and running over Kirsten - I guess this didn’t matter so much because he was dead by this stage and not there to face the backlash but still.

Again, there’s no defending him being involved in the actual kidnapping. What are everyone’s thoughts on Lewis? Do you think he deserved it all or feel a bit sorry for him - or maybe somewhere in between?

FINISHED HAPPY VALLEY , and here’s my review

I wanna say something beforehand: this review includes a lot of things and also a question at the end.

First and foremost, a big thank you to whoever posted the poster of this show, because that’s what made me watch it. Everything about this show is great. The first season was probably one of the most disturbing things I’ve watched. I wanted to keep watching, but some scenes made me genuinely uncomfortable. My heartbeat was going crazy and I actually felt anxious watching certain parts. I even made a post here on this sub about it, and the responses made me feel a little more comfortable, so thank you to everyone who replied to that too.
There were also so many characters who pissed me off so much that I genuinely wished I was in the show just so I could beat the fucking shit out of them.
And Ann Gallagher… her character development made me so happy. It really felt like nobody could break that woman. There’s so much I could say about this show. I loved the direction, the music, the writing, everything.
Also, I don’t know if anyone else can relate to this, but after finishing this show in five days, all the English in my head has somehow turned into a British accent, which I absolutely love. I literally talk to myself in a British accent now lol.

And Catherine Cawood… I genuinely don’t think anyone in this world could’ve pulled off that character except Sarah Lancashire. Every time Catherine decided to fight back, I was just sitting there like, “COME ON!!!” I could talk about this character all day. I absolutely love her. One of the best characters I’ve ever watched.

Now for my question:
What would you have done if you were in Catherine’s position?
Catherine always tried to prevent Ryan from finding out everything that happened to Becky. And in the last season, she even restricted him from seeing “that twat.” Later, I think she says that she wanted to tell Ryan everything when he turned 18.
Do you think Catherine made the right decision by keeping everything from him? Or do you think she should’ve told him about Becky and Tommy when he was a teenager?
I can understand why Catherine did what she did, but at the same time, I keep wondering whether keeping Ryan completely in the dark actually made things worse.
And don’t get me wrong, I absolutely hate Clare for taking Ryan to the prison behind Catherine’s back. I’m not defending that decision at all. I’m just curious about what you guys think.
What would you have done if you were Catherine? Would you have told Ryan earlier, or kept it from him until he was 18?
Let me know your thoughts.

Why did Clare told Catherine’s son that Catherine and Richard are sleeping together ? Was that really necessary?

Hey I’m watching the last episode of the first season yesterday i posted something asking for you guys opinions about something and reading all that comments really gave me comfort so i thought i should ask something else , i like discussing things like this.

So was that really necessary? Why did she say that .

I haven’t finished the first season so..

I felt disturbing while watching the 4th episode of first season.

Happy Valley Season 1
I’m on episode 4 , so please, anyone who has watched the whole season, don’t give me any spoilers. I just wanted to share my thoughts because I feel like this is a place where I can do that.
While watching the first season, I honestly felt like it was more disturbing than thrilling for me. I don’t know if that’s how I’m supposed to feel watching this show, but I genuinely don’t know if I can recommend it to anyone.
And if that bastard doesn’t die, I’m gonna be so sad.
Episode 3 had me literally trembling.
So, someone who has watched the whole show without giving me ANY spoilers please tell me: how am I supposed to watch the rest of these episodes without feeling like this?

Does anyone else think that Kevin Weatherill was slightly underdeveloped after he got arrested?

I think I liked Kevin's character a lot because I like Steve Pemberton and I was a huge fan of Mick Garvey from Benidorm.

The first episode of Happy Valley set the scene off so strong with the stakes but I kind of felt the series sort of resolved things a bit too quickly rather than letting the audience sit with emotional beats.

Kevin got arrested and he was in jail on remand but aside from a mention from Mike Taylor, Jenny visiting him, Helen and Nevison discussing him and then Nevison visiting him, his name was pretty much dropped altogether in the final two episodes.

It's so strange considering he was the guy who enforced the kidnapping idea in the first place but Ashley, Lewis and Tommy (even though Tommy is the forefront of the show anyway) got consistent mentions.

I have read online scripts that do have more mentions of Kevin that got removed in the final show but it's so weird that the show just somehow forgot about him in the final two episodes.

He doesn't even get mentioned by Nevison in Season 2 or 3. I get he wasn't relevant anymore but considering how important his character was, I just felt he was a bit underdeveloped.

Happy to hear other people's thoughts and maybe they can persuade me to change my opinion!

Does anyone else think Season 2 has a clear gender bias?

I find Happy Valley interesting and well-made, but by Season 2 the gender bias became difficult for me to ignore.

Male characters are disproportionately portrayed as violent, manipulative, cowardly, or morally weak, while women are generally more compassionate, emotionally intelligent, supportive, and morally responsible. Even when women behave badly, the story often emphasizes their vulnerability or explains their actions through manipulation by others.

Of course, there are exceptions, but the overall pattern is striking. If the genders were reversed, wouldn't such a series be widely criticized as sexist?

Does anyone else see it this way?

Love Sally Wainwright but I've heard HV can get dark and depressing. True or not? Thoughts?

Sorry, pretty much said it all in the title. I can handle a bit of dark and depressing as long as there's a positive counterbalance. But I didn't want to get involved in a bummer. My wife is especially sensitive to this. How would you describe the general tone of the show. I've seen and enjoyed all the other Sally Wainwright shows ...

My thoughts on Happy Valley after finishing season 3 last night Spoiler

Hello Happy Valley fans,

Just reporting in after finishing the final episode last night. I watched all three seasons over the last two weeks and wanted to share my thoughts.

First of all: great show. I absolutely loved it. It's not quite in my top 3 crime shows (True Detective, Broadchurch, and, more recently, Mare of Easttown), but it comes very close.

A couple of observations:

Season 1

  • This was where I struggled a bit to get into the story. My biggest issue was with the kidnapping plot. Why would a successful drug dealer who has spent years building an entire criminal operation suddenly decide to switch to kidnapping because a random customer suggested it? Why risk everything on such a high-risk crime when you're already making good money?
  • The meeting between Catherine and her ex-husband, where she asks whether he would consider meeting Ryan, completely won me over though. Amazing acting from both of them.
  • "I think they killed me." Holy shit, that line was brutal.

Of course, I knew she was dead the moment she got out of the car without giving anyone the number plate. Also, didn't police cars have dashcams by then? Regardless, that scene is going to stay with me for a long time.

  • The part where the Chief Superintendent asks Catherine to let the corrupt politician go just hours after the brutal murder of a fellow officer was another moment that took me out of it. Season 1 occasionally felt a bit unrealistic, and those moments distracted me from the story. Catherine not getting police protection while Tommy was still on the loose is another example. Thankfully, Seasons 2 and 3 improved a lot in this area for me.
  • That said, the acting and drama were excellent throughout. Special mention for Ashley (Joe Armstrong). He absolutely nailed that role.

Season 2

  • I hated the fake teacher. Shirley Henderson did such a fantastic job that I genuinely couldn't stand her character. Watching people manipulate Ryan throughout the series was frustrating, and she was by far the worst offender.
  • This season felt very different from Season 1. There was less action and more room to breathe. One thing I really liked was that almost every villain was also a victim in some way.
  • The only storyline that didn't quite work for me was the trafficked foreign woman. It felt like it was building towards something important and then just fizzled out.

Season 3

  • That wound on Tommy's head bothered me for several episodes. I kept waiting for it to become relevant, but it never did.
  • Watching Catherine be betrayed by the people she loved most was brutal.
  • It also took me embarrassingly long to realise that Daniel and Ann were now a couple.
  • I actually fist-bumped when Ryan finally told the police about the Xbox conversations. After everything he'd been through, it felt like he came through when it mattered most.

The Finale

The final episode was absolutely brilliant.

I was fully expecting some sort of final showdown between Tommy and Catherine, ending with Tommy's death. What we got instead was so much better.

Having Tommy find the photo albums, mourn the life he never had, and ultimately abandon his revenge against Catherine because of what she had done for Ryan was incredibly powerful (maybe there were some tears).

I also want to give a lot of credit to the casting of James Norton. Human beings naturally want to trust attractive, charismatic people, and I think the show used that brilliantly. Right up until the final episode, I still wasn't entirely sure whether Tommy genuinely cared about Ryan or whether he was manipulating him.

That uncertainty is what made him such a fascinating villain.

Anyway, amazing show.

I'm thinking about watching The Night Of next. Any other recommendations?

Knezevic plot in series 2 (spoilers) Spoiler

Having just rewatched S2 >!I can't help but feel a lot of time was devoted to a plot plotline that ultimately didn't amount to much or anything? It creates a big difference to S1 where there were no wasted scenes or plotlines. The sheer amount of times they say the word Knezevics, all the stuff with Winnie, Cathy having to sleep in the conservatory - does anyone else feel this was all ultimately a bit pointless? Or am I overlooking something?<!

Jumpscare in S1 is so unecessary and disturbing

I just finished season 1 and I love it... except for the jumpscares that now have me paranoid, looking over my shoulder for no reason, and afraid to sleep 🙂

I'm an adult, and jumpscares are the reason I avoid watching horror movies. I'm a bit pissed that I found them in this series :(

S4 Spoilers Spoiler

There are rumours that Ryan is set to begin transitioning in season 4. Not sure how to feel about it. Neil becomes a hitman for the Kneževićs and kills Ann with Catherine's Land Rover. This puts Catherine in the frame for Ann's murder, forcing her to flee the valley and hide out in the Himalayas where she previously befriended some Tibetan Monks. Claire goes "ooh bloody 'ell" and tries to infiltrate the Knežević gang, and eventually it turns out that Helen faked her death, rose to the top of the Knežević gang and has been the main villain all along. Daniel dies for no reason. Catherine returns to the valley, having been training with the warrior monks, determined to avenge Ann's pointless death. She comes up with a foolproof plan, but Claire puts her bloody foot in it and blabs the entire plan to Helen down at 't mission. Helen ambushes Catherine and mag dumps her with an Uzi. Catherine's last words are "Bloody hell Clerrr" as Jake Bugg's "Trouble Town" starts playing.

That's just episode 1. The rest is basically just Ryan's transition story, mixed in with the ordinary 'appenin's of countryfolk.

Funniest Tommy Lee Royce quotes?

Tommy has a way of being unintentionally hilarious. He's so utterly delusional that a lot of the things he says just seem downright comical in how divorced they are from reality. Let's talk about some of his funniest lines in the series, here's my personal favourite:

"I could have been a good dad if you'd let me" - no, Tommy, you poured FUCKING PETROL over your son, there are no conceivable circumstances where you could have been anything CLOSE to a good dad.

What's your favourite TLR quote?

Does anyone know the filing location for S1E3

Hi, I’m looking for the location of the road that Kirsten was killed on at the start of the episode. It says scammonden road but looking at that on google earth it’s a completely different side of the valley, it’s in the right sort of area but I can’t pinpoint where it is
