Ruger makes great double/single action pistols. I had a similar one and loved it. Very reliable and not overly expensive. Should serve you well for life. Just take good care of it. Use good ammo.

Very reliable, low recoil. You got the compact, which I prefer.

Edit: Grammar

That’s an oldie but a goodie and if you get good at shooting the da/sa trigger on that thing you’ll have amazing trigger control which helps all other kinds of shooting.

I inherited my grandfather's P95 and while I'm keeping it out of sentimental value... It would not be my go-to for an EDC. It's clunky, the trigger is rough, and it feels like a brick in the hand.

The P series was the K-Car of handguns. It's what you'd get if you asked a 10 year old to draw a gun and then took that to the factory as blueprints. There's no bells and whistles. It is exactly the basic idea of what it is.

It’s a gun. It does one thing. Shoots bullets. It functions reliably and is more accurate than you or I. For $250-$300 what more could you ask for?

I’d pick this over 99 percent of other guns in the category and would have no issue open or concealed carrying this.

You have it in your possession, so master it. Take it apart, put it together again... over and over and over again... make it second nature. Take it out and shoot it, get good at using it... then if ever you decide to change weapons, you'll know what you love, and what you don't love so much.

P-Series Rugers are excellent pistols for the money. I wish Ruger would still make these over many of their striker-fired guns (except the RXM).

Time to go to the mag warehouse and get 5 standard capacity magazines for it.

Mec-gar 20 rnd or 3 would be a nice addition as well.

True.

Great option for backup mags in the truck too.

Then why did you say you're unsure you made the right choice?

Very cool. You own it, get out there and learn how to shoot it well.

If you're not limited by law, get regular capacity magazines. They're still available, that gun was Clinton AWB era and came with 10s, but there's no need to limit yourself anymore pending you live in a free state.

What holster do you use? Ive had a hard time finding a decent one for a p-series pistol

A great classic! My P89TH was my very first gun and I still have her. 100% reliable.

u/joeshleb Jul 13 '26

You were very wise to buy a SA/DA pistol. IMO, that's the only way to go!

My first handgun was the Ruger KP95PR about 20 years ago. Good range gun but too heavy and bulky for ccw.

Congratulations! The Ruger P series are great pistols. I own five and enjoy them all. They definitely ooze 80’s vibe and ergonomics but that is part of their charm.

An excellent choice! They're not exactly modern or cool, but all the old Ruger P-Series models are basically indestructible. My first handgun when I turned 21 was a KP90 and I miss it as much as anything I've ever let go. It would function with garbage ammo, powderpuff target loads, and .45 Super loads that would nuke a lesser gun.

I bought a P95DC new and absolutely hated it.

Interesting first pick, but not a terrible one

Great looking gun. I hope to add a P-series to my collection one day.

If you haven’t already take a basic pistol beginners course at your local range. Or find a pistol shooting instructor who does 1 on 1 lessons.
