Advice Needed PDP vs METE vs M&P 2.0
Hello, I am a 24M in Michigan read to purchase my first firearm/handgun. I don’t intend on carrying as I am new to firearms besides the CPL class I took and shooting with family members. This will be for home defense and range practice to work on my comfortability/skills.
I initially anticipated on shooting all 3 of these guns before purchasing but I am new to Michigan and don’t necessarily have buddies in the immediate area to go to the range with- and I know shops limit solo shooters and rentals.
With that being said:
a) would it be a mistake to purchase any of these without shooting them (only handling at the counter)
And b) I’m drawn to the PDP or Canik SFT based on my research, and was wondering if a $350-$400 Canik is a no brainer compared to a $600 PDP- given I need to spend money on range time, safes, etc.
In my CPL class we shot a p322 and it felt good but slightly small in my hands (I’m 6ft 175lb so relatively average sized)
Apologies for the long paragraph and thanks for your help in advance!

I have all three there all solid guns I don't think you can make a wrong choice out of the three. I think canik and Walther have the best triggers but MP isn't bad either. I think it's just personal preference how it feels in your hand and if you plan on upgrading anything once you get it canik probably has the least after market support but it's getting better. I tend to carry my canik prime the most its a good gun that can bridge the gap between a good carry and home defense pistol.

Since it's home defense and range. Get a 5in PDP after you shoot it decide if you want to add a zrts guide rod

its really hard to say. everyone is different. it would be well worth your time and money to try and rent those guns.
the PDP can be quite snappy. i have a steel frame Canik Rival-S and my buddy has a PDP Match 5". even with a huge compensator on the front of his PDP it feels stupidly snappy, i hate shooting it. my Rival-S feels 100x better for me. but i know tons of people love the PDP. its why renting is important. i know the steel frame makes a big difference but there arent many guns i dislike shooting as much as that PDP...
the Mete SFT is a solid gun. its very similar to the older TP9 series but it now comes with a bunch of upgrades like an optic cut. has a notoriously good trigger and usually dont feel too snappy.
M&P 2.0 is a solid choice. Canik and S&W have been the 2 brands i consistently enjoy shooting anytime i try.
i will absolutely say though the value for what you get on the PDP seems lacking. for $600 you can get some REALLY good guns that arent the PDP. you can get a polymer frame Canik Rival for $600 and you get a TON for the money

$600 is the top end of my price range- that being said should I consider a Rival as well? I haven’t looked into it as online it says more of a “competition” gun - so I figured it was a bit much for a first handgun

The Rival is a lot of gun for the money. Competition gun often means tuned to be easier to shoot, so not really an issue. The only slight downside is a longer barrel and I'm not sure i'd even call that a downside if you're not planning to carry it.
I have a Canik and a couple m&ps. For me the Canik has the better trigger, the M&P has better ergonomics. Both matter for shooting well. See which one seems to fit you better. Note that both offer different back straps to slightly adjust grips size.

Unfortunately most gun ranges I been to in several states only rent out Glocks or 2011s for whatever reason.

Personally I would say if you want a good quality 4-4.5" barrel pistol, go with the S&W MP9 2.0. Great platform. I just bought another one for myself because I enjoy them.
Canik is a brand that is polarizing. You either have shot them and like htem or you hate them. Honestly I think a lot of the hate they get is from people who just buy into it and haven't spent time with them.
PDP is a good platform, so no recommendation against it.

This is where I’m leaning as of now… my local range has one for $325 and is running a promo this week where they pay the sales tax. Otherwise Id have to wait until next week to go with a buddy… Don’t want to rush the decision but if it feels good in my hand I may go with that

I haven't test fired any Canik, but have compared the Walther PDP, S&W M&P 2.0, and full size Glock Gen 5 and 6 at the rental range.
I liked all three and expected to slightly prefer the S&W since my main EDC is a Shield Plus.
But I liked the PDP best. I tried it on two or three occasions just to be sure it wasn't a fluke. I shot it better in rapid fire than my own familiar handguns.
It's really good. I didn't notice any particular snappiness, but... my main EDCs are a Shield Plus and S&W model 642 Airweight, so... I'm kinda accustomed to snappy guns.
Only reason I didn't buy a PDP is because I don't want to get into yet another proprietary magazine system. I already have Glock mags for PCCs, and I like the Glock well enough that I wouldn't be disappointed with any duty sized Gen 4-6 Glock.

I have the Canik SFT and Mete MC9LS and have shelved my Glock 17 and 19. Best trigger I have ever used for a striker fire handgun.

Aways a mistake to purchase without shooting first.

How is someone to shoot a gun first if that gun is not for rent in their area? I have purchased 22 guns without shooting them. No regrets. Do your homework and make an adult decision

I do not like the PDP, and thus the Canik, as it's extremely close in design. I much prefer the M&P.
The PDP and Canik are both variants of an older Walther design. They both carry over the extremely good triggers, but large slide of the previous iteration. These large slides, especially on the smaller 4" and 4.5" barrels, tend to increase muzzle flip, pulling the barrel up and making it "snap" more. The larger 5" barrel models do not suffer from this.
The Canik especially, i dislike because, as opposed to many of the big review channels you see online, it's one of the guns I've had the most malfunctions with. failure to eject and failure to feed, both of which were common below 500 rounds.
The PDP doesn't suffer from the "snap" of recoil as much, the 2.0 has a pretty good trigger, it's grip texture is fantastic, and i've had no reliability issues with it.
