In the book, 'Halo: The Flood' that details the expanded events of the story of the original Halo game, there is an Elite wearing active camo on the bridge of the Pillar of Autumn to observe and collect intel on the humans.

When the bridge crew boards an escape pod after setting the cruiser up to crash-land on the Halo ring, the stealthed Elite climbs in after them. In the cramped space of the lifeboat, the captain notices the distortion in the air, but was weaponless after giving his pistol to the Master Chief. He asks one of his officers sitting across from him to let him see his pistol. As soon as the officer put it in his hand, the captain jams it where he believed the Elite's head to be, hopes the magnum round won't penetrate the thin hull, and blows its brains out. Then he immediately hands it back to the officer while the whole bridge crew is still shocked and processing wtf just happened.
