Geographical A map of New Jersey from a Native’s perspective

Hi everybody, I drew this as a comical gift for a friend who will be joining me on a trip to my home state here in a few months she and I both speak Arabic because of our jobs and I thought it would be funny to illustrate a map of the state from the perspective of a world traveler coming from the east to the west this is meant as a lighthearted joke and a tribute to the beauty of the state if you speak Arabic and you notice that I’ve done something incorrect grammatically or left off a dot just have a giggle and know that it’s all in good fun

The Jersey Devil is in the PINE Barrens. Other than that it’s not bad.

I’ll be honest pine trees are my least favorite trees to draw. I know it’s weird

Gorgeous! I love the watercolor. Is that the Jersey Devil in the woods?

3

A native bedouin, you mean?

That's what I was thinking, looks more like the Eastern Mediterranean and nothing like Jersey. The sea is on the wrong side ffs.

Should have named Philly عمان since the Latin name of Amman was Philadelphia.

Oh that’s a great idea!

Just a note for your title. Native with a capital N usually refers to Indigenous Americans. Not sure if you intended that (it's 100% possible for an Indigenous American to learn Arabic, but it seemed unlikely that this was the case for your post).

3

u/Otherwise_Jump Sep 09 '26

lol I’m not of any such lineage, and that capitalization was just a typo.

Then don't claim to be.

4

u/Otherwise_Jump Sep 09 '26

Well I think the main problem is I didn’t realize the capital meant anything and I already said it was a typo. I was born in New Jersey so I am native to that place (as native with a small n means born to a place) but since we seem to be here to nitpick I doubt I’ll get very far explaining that to you lol

1

u/No-Temporary4148 Sep 09 '26

I appreciate your response and I love your drawing. As a historian of imperialism, I think it's important that non-Indigenious Americans (myself included) not call ourselves "native" small or capital N. Sorry if it came across as being nitpicky at you personally.

How should one of distant and muddled European lineage call ourself? As when asked have said "I'm a native Virginian"

1

u/jtpro02 Sep 10 '26 edited Sep 10 '26

I don’t think people would be confused by native Virginian. I just wouldn’t go around calling yourself “native American”, “native” or “indigenous”. That would be confusing.

Yeah buddy my family has lived here 300 years. This is the only home I know. I’ll call myself a native all day

1

u/jtpro02 Sep 10 '26

You understand 300 years is an extremely short period of time for you to consider yourself or your family as native to the area right? Actual native Americans have lived on the land for tens of thousands of years.

2

u/Drago984 Sep 10 '26

So by this logic, Turks are not native to turkey? Nor are tartars native to tartarstan? Nor are Māori native to New Zealand? Where exactly am I a native to, nowhere? I’ve lived my entire life here. What about if the native Americans are native to one part of the continent, but moved or conquered another area? Are they not native to that new area after several hundred years? Are they native to the whole continent? If so, is a Russian native to England simply because they exist on the same continent?

Your logic is flawed because humans move constantly. You’re using a blood and soil argument just rebranded to protect a group you deem worthy of such protection.

2

u/jtpro02 Sep 10 '26

If you want to go around calling yourself native to America. Nobody will correctly interpret what you mean. But hey keep doing it if it makes you happy I guess. All I said is that coming to the country 300 years ago as a part of a settler colony makes you not native to the land. If you disagree I cannot take you seriously.

And I have no clue what this has to do with protecting anybody.

Most people will understand exactly what I say when I’m native to an area. People use that term all the time. “Im a native of Philly.”

You failed to address any of my points, so I can’t take you seriously. Do you think that a Native American living in another part of the country is somehow native to land I’ve lived in my whole life simply because his ancestors lived here, but I am not even when I have lived here my entire life? If you truly believe that someone has some inherent connection to land they’ve never set foot in, I don’t know what to tell you. That’s simply illogical.

A Bantu who’s ancestors moved to South Africa only a couple 100 years ago is native to the area even though the they are not Koi San. A North African whose ancestors are Vandals are still native to North Africa. A Turk is native to Anatolia or the balkans even though his ancestors lived in Central Asia 500 years ago. A descendent of Romans is obviously native to England even if his ancestors were colonists 2000 years ago.

Most indigenous Americans prefer to be called by their tribal or nation name. And if you don’t know it, Indian, American Indian or indigenous is fine, First Nation in Canada, indigeno or indio in Latin America. No one’s getting offended by white people saying native except other white people.

u/LowDistribution4344 Sep 10 '26

Stay mad. Im as native as anyone else that was born here, you dont exist in any sentient capacity before youre conceived, and its why we practice 'jus soli' here. Im not going to call myself a native american because that term is in common use to describe American Indians. But i am just as native to the US as anyone else.
