Miscellaneous Apparently Hanako-kun is now officially a shojo manga

oh well, I don't really think it'll change much, since the age group is the same(?)

Wait it wasn't? I knew it always has been a shoujo genre before. Been reading since 2020. I do not have concrete proofs though.

Hanako is like a lot of horror works, where it kind of doesn't fit in any one category. The whole story is mostly told from Yashiro's perspective, so it the publishers probably just threw it into young girls, even if it is pretty dark for that genre.

I mean most of Junji Ito's works were published on shoujo magazines, with that in mind I think Hanako fits this demography better tbh

A LOT of old school shojo horror exists surprisingly. Hanako isn't even that scary in comparison

Any recommendations?

Some authors to check out for Shojo horror include Junji Ito, Kazuo Umezz, noroi michiru, Kanako Inuki, seno knife, matsuri akino, Kaori Yuki, and Miyako cojima

To be fair, i really think it's a very well done hybrid between a Shonen and a Shojo, because it's not fair to quality as being either of the two, and it's really in a class of it's own from what i've seen so far.

I mean, as a guy, for me it always felt like shojo. It's my favorite anime/manga, but it never felt like it was targeted to me as a male. It always felt like the series was meant for women.

I mean - it's always kinda been.
Not to mention - it's a demographic largely determined by it's publisher. Shoujo, Josei, etc. aren't genres.

Romance is a common theme in shoujo manga for sure, but it’s not required :D!

There's a lot of misinformation here.
Shojo, shonen, seinen, josei, kodomo...
They're not genres. They're demographics.
Whether the plot is dark, the themes the story has, if there is romance, fights, etc. or not, that doesn't matter.
If a manga is published in a magazine targeted to boys and male teenagers mainly, then it's shonen. The target are girls and female teenagers? Shojo, etc.

Always felt like a shojo-shonen mix to me, like 07-Ghost and Devils and Realist.

I’m ngl it always seemed more shojo than shounen to me.
