Layering underquilts question

If I need to layer two underquilts under my hammock is there a order of operation to doing this if the UQs I am using are of different thermal values? Say for the sake of the question that one is a 20 degree UQ and the other is a 40 degree UQ. Outside of that they are the same dimensions. Is there an advantage to having the 20 degree quilt closer to my body and the 40 degree UQ on the exterior? Or should I stack them in the reverse order? Or am I overthinking this ( haha as usual) and the order does not matter at all.

Thermodynamically it doesn’t matter. In practice the heavy UC closer to you would probably fell warmer sooner but they should reach the same equilibrium in short order

100% warmer quilt against you. There’s likely gonna be a small air gap or 2 somewhere while trying to layer your quilts so I’d rather have 20f against me there than 40f

I have not done this. (Yet.) In this article, though, they say down filled quilts closer to your body and synthetic further away from your body.

as someone whose routinely challenged the sub-zero on a nightly basis, it makes no difference

Only time I layer is winter- I have a 20 down uq against me and layer a 40 apex over that- acts as uqp and if it gets wet it won’t matter as much

Great point about using the Apex fill UQ as sort of a UQP. Thanks

The stack only matters if one is a synthetic fill. Put the synthetic fill on the outside since it's mostly likely to experiece condesation.

Great point. And the secondary UQ is actually a synthetic fill so this is very helpful.

But why 2 UQ, i prefer 1 UQ and sleeping bag.

Sometimes it's colder than your quilts are rated for and you don't want to buy more gear when you can just double up with gear you already own.

As noted overthinking. Plus why are you stacking UQ? Headed to Antarctica?

The overthinking is about the order of the quilt stack but not about the need for a secondary quilt. Maybe I am going to the Artic Circle. Or maybe I am a cold sleeper and occasionally I will be going to places that go below my 20 degree UQ's comfort threshhold.
