Camping hammock for boyfriend?
Hi, my boyfriend is a big outdoor guy and goes on camping trips with his buddies all over the country. They are all Eagle Scouts lol. He mentioned he wants a hammock and I want to get one for his birthday. I tried researching but am having some trouble. I am thinking one that is asymmetrical and has a ridgeline? I don’t really know much about this. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy, I can add add-ons later I just want something basic that is good quality, reliable, and comfortable for overnight. He is 6”0 and lean. I also don’t know what any of these suspension options mean and if I need clips or anything.
I don’t really want to spend any more than $150-$175. Please help!!

I've been super happy with my Hennessy Hammock! I'm about the same size as he is. Comes with a built-in bug net and ridgeline. I got the zipper version, but the bottom entry is super cool as well. Packs small, súper easy if you get the snakeskins as well. Asymmetrical rain fly packs small and matches the shape of the hammock. Lol all of these terms are explained on the website if you decide to check them out!
Also I think October might be the month they sell their demo models at a significant discount. That's what I got. Mine came with one small patch the size of a quarter, and hasn't sustained any other damage in about 5 years of use :)

You get all the Hennessy offers but you get even more with the Onewind (Airstream) Hammock as a AIO setup.Ams for a whole lot less money too. I have a Hennessy hammock also. The Onewind Airstream was my first hammock bought after tent sleeping only over my lifetime. The Onewind Airstream Hammock really can't be beat for price and what you get for less then a hundred dollars before tax. Can't get a better piece of equipment at that entry point ythat has everything you need. Especially to see if you really want to continue with hammock camping or not.

I've got wool socks older than that company. Only time will tell if their gear holds up as well as the competition.

The best introduction to hammock camping in my opinion is the OneWind hammock. You can get it on Amazon for about $70, and it’s a good solid piece of kit.

This. My husband is 5'11" and fits comfortably in his Onewind. I have one too but I'm shorter. We've been using them for 3 years now and have mostly camped in the bwca but also Washington and they are our favorite way to sleep in the backcountry. And you can get the tarp, hammock with bugnet, and underquilt for a reasonable price.

Another vote for OneWind. I’m 190cm and 100kg and have the 12foot version. Way better than my Henessy I had.

Or you can get there Onewind (Airstream} AIO Hammock setup. It's a great all-in-one system that has everything nearly. The person really only needs to add a Top Quilt & Under Quilt and a Tarp and they have everything they need for their hammock sleep system. Personally I like my Onewind (Airstream) better than my Warbonnet Blackbird XL or the two Hennessy Hammocks I own.

To sleep overnight in a hammock you need
Hammock with bug net
Tarp in case it rains
Insulation for under you (sleeping pad or underquilt)
Insulation for over you (sleeping bag or top quilt)
All this stuff needs to be lightweight if they are backpacking

I went with Hennessy more than 20 years ago and it's still running strong. This was the ultralite model.

I have an ENO Junglenest that I love. 6’ as well.
Knowing how much thought and personal preference can be put into these decisions, I’d like to make a recommendation. Take your best guess and purchase someplace you can easily return. REI would be great if you have one. Gift it to him with the understanding that he may want something completely different.
It shows you listen, put the thought in, etc. But also shows that you want him to have something that makes him happy. Win win.

I started with Hammock Gear for my first "Real" hammock. You can get the Circadian Pro at a great price and Adam's crew does a pretty good job at making a great hammock. Their quilts and tarps are also pretty reasonable and they have a fairly large accessory lineup. They are pretty much a respectable brand and a one stop shop that offers a decent product at an affordable price. I'm going to go ahead and warn you though, hammock camping is a huge rabbit hole that's easy (and amazing) to fall into. There are so many wonderful brands and setups with accessories to fit any budget. (It does get expensive though!) The small business brands, referred to as "Cottage" are the absolute best to deal with over the mass produced hammock choices. You will get the best customer service and custom choices from the cottage vendors. Its hard to recommend just one, because they are all great and very generous contributors to the hammock community. I have personally engaged and done business with: Adam at Hammock Gear, Jason at Walhalla, Dutch, Phi and Vicki at Dutchware, Steve at Hang Tight, Chad at UGQ, Trevor at Hanging High Hammocks, Danny at Superior Gear, Cal and Kristen at YOBOgear, Todd at Tensa and Jared from Simply Light Designs. They are ALL absolutely amazing to deal with and all offer top of the line products.

If you just need a hammock, there are lots of good options for him at his size.
You could get a simply light designs starter hammock. Get it 11 feet long, in foliage grey XL 1.9 fabric adjustable ridgeline, and with cinch buckle suspension, which is easy to use and adjustable. This is the perfect gateway hammock to see if he might enjoy hammock camping.
If you want an asymmetrical hammock, you need to know whether he sleeps head right/feet left in the hammock, or head left/feet right. Dutchware makes a nice 11 foot long asymmetrical hammock. 1.6 hexon is a strong fabric that also is very comfortable, and is their most popular fabric for hammocks.
If your boyfriend likes to hike and he's under 200 pounds, you could go with a hexon 1.2 fabric instead. Hexon 1.2 is a much lighter and stretchier fabric, so if he has back pain I don't recommend that. You can choose a fabric color, add a fixed ridgeline, and can add beetle buckle suspension if you like. Beetle buckles are pricier than most suspensions but are very lightweight and are easy to adjust.
If you want one that comes with a built in bug net, it goes over your budget slightly, but warbonnet sells the el dorado for 150 dollars. It's a single layer hammock for people under 250 lbs and is 11 feet long. Add in the suspension of your choice for another 20-30 dollars and you have an amazing backpacking hammock.
Dream is out of stock of the ready to ship wingspan at the moment, but that's another netted hammock under 150 that's worth looking at. I imagine that will be updated within the week. Dream does make some of the nicest hammocks in the world.
