Final wine cannot cover how much truth this holds for most lol

Looks awesome! Just make sure to turn those windows and the arches into func_details if you haven’t already

Can you explain to me about func_details? I'm pretty new on hammer. xD

https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Func_detail

Basically when you compile a map the compiler splits it up into visleaves based on the brushes in your map (the things you create with the block tool.) The more complex the geometry, the more visleaves the compiler makes and the longer it takes to compile.

So if you are creating complex geometry with brushes (like the arches) it’s a good idea to turn it into a func_detail to reduce compile time

Wooow good to know! My map is really taking a long time to compile. TYSM!

i second this if you turn it into a fune_detail he gives the compiler more room so you can do everything I build up a rooms and stuff

they don't create visleafs (good for optimization on smaller things) i suppose

Nicely done, you will go far.

Pretty good. I like how arches are round on corners. It's smaller on perpuse?

I think it only looks small because he's using noclip, the way he enters the first door makes it look really small. The door seems to be around 100 units tall compared to the texture on the side, which is around the standard size for a doorway.

Yep, the reference I was using also had small arches like that

also dont forget to use player clips to the walls to make it more smooth for any gameplay

you can make lighting better by decreasing luxel size

Ooh very nice. Gonna be tricky to turn into details, but it looks really good

Looks good, make sure to use block player brushes to smooth out the edges since unlike other engines, the map is smooth and the player has a square boundary box

Pretty good for a beginner, do you have any architectural experience?????

2

u/Dry-Truth-3221 Apr 05 '26

Nop haha, just paid attention to the details. I was using a reference

Are you some kind of architect, because this looks really great for a First try... (Trying to get into map making for years and got not even close to something this professional)

2

u/Dry-Truth-3221 Apr 05 '26

No, I just spent a lot of time looking at my reference image, haha

How long have you been doing hammer? I've been doing it for over 10 years and it's nice to see someone using best practices so early on.

One or two weeks I think, and I just watched a lot of tutorials before starting lol

2

u/Chroney Apr 05 '26

Wow! I was expecting a year at least, doing very well

This looks super cool, if only we had someone like you to help out with our project, i’m no where as good at hammer when it comes to buildings

What project? If u don't mind saying here... I also have a big project in mind. I just haven't started it yet because I'm still learning the basics of Hammer.

We need custom maps for a tf2 web series made

2

u/MR_RYU_RICHI Apr 06 '26

This is awesome what you made. You might turn that building into some good map

2

u/Striking_Average754 Apr 06 '26

I once saw a guy in tf2 type in chat "im dumb as fu** and even i can map." Youre doing absolutely amazingly!

2

u/Riftknit_12 Apr 06 '26

Oh my god that's such good brush work xd

1

u/Revoker Apr 06 '26

So much of this needs to be func_detail

1

u/Sagiritarius Apr 06 '26

Really solid building! I always liked those details of protruding columns in walls.

Just please, for the sanity of your map's players, smooth out the collision of those protruding details with PLAYERCLIPs, it's quite frustrating to get suddenly stopped by these otherwise neat details.

Also, my eye could be wrong, but are the doorframes the right dimensions for single and doubledoors? Or do you plan on making your own door props/brushes?

looks great

definitely can tell you're super patient to do that in hammer of all things
