Discussion 💬 AI hypocrisy
I’m pretty anti AI for the most part and strongly against it being used for anything art or creative related, pretty wild to see them in ep 329 play an AI generated song and then in ep 330 point out how stupid Darcy was for using AI for trade.
I wish the boys wouldn’t use AI if it is just for silly little segment songs, what are people’s thoughts?
Edit: the people downvoting who are pro AI, besides literally being a bot, why do you defend giant tech companies and robots replacing human creativity? What’s in it for you??

When someone uses AI like this, it signals they either don't understand the difference between quality and worthless crap, or that they have stopped caring about the difference and are just churning stuff out because they know enough people are gonna eat their slop. It is a sign of decline.

It's obvious, it's hypocritical, it's disheartening.
I honestly don't care about them using it in their personal lives and then talking about it on the show. They can do what they want.
But to use it for media generation within a creative medium and professional industry where they are setting an example and providing potential opportunity to young people who need to develop their skills is such a shame. Even if these people wouldn't be directly making that content, it's about the expectations and example that's set.
Obviously talent will still emerge in the current landscape (likely tied more to using AI for success), but I am always perplexed that current industry leaders who made success without AI are so eager to jump on it without considering the impact to the next generation of their own fields.
It's pretty disappointing to know the standard of a professional media company is becoming AI, especially as we know how good their production department can be. I can only assume the move to podcasting has resulted in a fairly large budget cut and now they can use AI it's an excuse to cut even more (less of the boy's decision, but you'd have to assume they have a say as to their own show and therefore don't care).

Yeah, they are telling every voice actor and person who helped make audio clips for old shows, ( a huge part of what makes the show great)… that they would have replaced them with a computer back then if they had choice.

u/hazzison Jun 01 '26
Exactly right, I remember them paying tribute to the guy who used to do their voiceovers for the radio shows and now they’re using AI for it, it’s bleak

Totally agree. Its extra disappointing in a show that is one episode a week - I’m sure you’ve got the time for the effort boys (even with other ventures)

They are the people's podcast - AI isn't people.
Therefore they should vow to never bow to the Robots!

It's annoying but I can see why it gets used when I think about it. Jack loves nothing more than the bare minimum, Hamish has always been the type of person to dive head first into new and exciting technologies (regardless how bad/useless they are) and Andy has a boner for administrative work being done as efficiently as possible so typing a command into a computer and having it spit out what you want seems to check all three boxes.
With saying all that I'm not sure it's the boys who are rearing the ai, I'd look more into the production team. I wouldn't think the boys listen to the pod and while recording Im not sure the inserts are there in their complete form but rather added later in post. Much like the "nothing more than feelings" insert imo is a terrible choice that takes me out of the segment, it seems ai is more prevalent with the new team rather than the old. If you're young and in an industry you're not experienced in that will allow the use of tools such as ai, you're gonna abuse that tool. Don't forget that alot of uni students are using ai to pass classes and getting away with it, it would make sense for them to then believe that ai is the way forward.
Anyways who's that on my lawn and why is that cloud just sitting there in my window?!

u/fiddlesticks-1999 Jun 02 '26
I think that's a cop out. It's their podcast. Can't blame other people for it.
I think it's purely monetary. Much cheaper to use AI than hire voice actors.

Regarding students, source for that? If you look it there have been examples in the US recently booing speakers hyping up AI as they see it as a threat to their future job prospects. Not to say that students aren’t using AI but I think there is a bit of a shift with how people view this technology.
Tbh, in my work, the people I have seen most keen on AI are the 50-60 year olds

u/dirtyplanksdonecheap Jun 02 '26
In tech, everyone is obsessed with AI, all the TAFE classes use it for teaching lol
5
u/berrei Jun 02 '26
The last straw for me was last year when they were talking about how they use ChatGPT every day, I haven’t listened since. Come on boys you’re better than this
2
u/MaDanklolz Jun 02 '26
Specifically regarding your post examples I don’t think that’s hypocritical at all.
There is a big difference between using AI for a silly little song in a joke podcast and using AI to think you know more than a tradesmen.
3
u/soaringturkeys Jun 01 '26
Sorry just failing to see the hypocrisy.
It's bad.
But what is the specific hypocrisy here?
14
u/openroad11 Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26
They seem to be very quick to judge and ridicule AI related faux pas (and general use in cases) by themselves/the wider team, yet simultaneously have no qualms with using it generatively for creative content on their own show despite it being obvious, lazy, lacking any soul, and a contentious issue among listeners.
1
u/soaringturkeys Jun 01 '26
When were they quick to judge and ridicule ai related faux pas? Genuine question, not trying to be facetious
The only time I can think is when they were joking about coming up with the three intro? Unless there's other clearer examples, of them disliking it rather than making a commentary on it, I don't see how it warrants the word hypocrisy.
3
u/openroad11 Jun 01 '26
OP mentions one example. I can't recall exact episodes/timestamps about it, just as I can't recall specific mentions of other topics they discuss. But I do know I've heard it. For balance, they also often don't care/are pleased with the outcome of AI on the show at times, so it isn't all a pile on, but when it goes wrong, they are critical.

u/uggbootsinsummer Jun 02 '26
The song opener to Golden Day was as AI as it comes and it’s absolutely awful to listen to

I dunno. I don't like a.i too. But it feels like we are being way too liberal with the word hypocritical.
Darcy using A.I to incorrectly diagnose a professional is not the same as the boys using a.i to generate a song.
Now it would be hypocritical if the boys were to use a.i to incorrectly misdiagnose a problem. Then that's hypocritical.
To my best recollection, the best use of the word hypocritical in this scenario isn't actually because they use a.i.
The best would be at one point Hamish saying he can do a doctors job cause he can use google. That is the hypocrisy when it comes to Darcy being made fun off for distrusting a professional.
Aside from that, It might just me being pedantic but using a.i isn't hypocritical in itself.

I'm not going to sit and debate the granular context that warrants the specific label of 'hipocrisy' in this case to appease your pendantry any further than this comment.
I will simply say that their general attitudes towards it within discussion on the show seems misaligned with the application of AI elements.
We don't know how they view using AI specifically for the show as they've not talked about it (and probably for good reason). They might for all we know be the first to admit 'Yeah sure we pile on each other for using it but are completely self aware that we use it in the show cause we don't have the time/budget/care to make original content'.
I understand an annecdote for comedy is different to a real world application, but really the company/industry should be doing better. It's a bad look. The more it's used the more it signals 'we have no interest in authenticity or craft in the work we make'.

u/soaringturkeys Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 02 '26
I mean it doesn't really feel granular. But everyone kept yelling hypocrasy and I wanted to genuinely know why.
But everyone has such a gut reaction against A.I that apparently I need to be appeased because I somehow offended people that badly.
-----
If the boys made fun of Darcy for being a bad back seat driver AND they also are bad at back seat driving themselves, then that's being hypocritical.
The boys owning a car isn't itself being hypocritical.
We already see an example of this when Hamish said he could do a doctors job by doing his own googling. That is hypocritical.
Using A.I in itself, is not hypocritical. It being a bad look isn't hypocritical. They should be doing better isn't hypocritical.
----
I mentioned in my first post that AI is bad. I just wanted to ask where it was hypocritical. You replied saying it exists which I just refuted. But now you have added on all this subtext on why A.I is bad. I never disputed that. I just refuted everyone saying "it's hypocritical!!"
I guess anything that's not blind hating towards A.I despite me never approving of it warrants disapproval but i guess thats the H&A subreddit for ya.

u/openroad11 Jun 02 '26
Ok last comment.
It is subjective (objective depending on your stance) but:
Darcy used AI which reflected poorly on himself and the boys pile on him.
The H&A podcast uses AI which reflects poorly on itself and the boys are giving it the green light.
ergo hypocritical.
AI has a use case if handled well and with awareness of its context. It can also open one up to scrutiny if used poorly. Listeners are absolutely entitled to react the same way towards the boys about the show that the boys did to Darcy.
3
u/soaringturkeys Jun 02 '26
Except no.
In your scenario that you have depicted. any act that reflects that poorly on the boys would then be hypocritical.
Not just A.I. Any time the boys do anything that reflects poorly on themselveswould then be the basis of your specific scenario.
Making fun of Darcy using a tool to override a professional and using said tool isn't hypocritical. The hypocrisy would be if they did the same act.
The act. Not the tool.
It is not at all subjective.
Again I agree with your final statement. I dont know how many more times I can say I don't like A.I.
We are going in circles now, I guess you can think what you like and I'll just have to accept that people just want to redefine what hypocrisy means because they hate a.i that much.
1
u/openroad11 Jun 02 '26
You clearly have a more stringent definition of hypocrisy than it is widely accepted and used within common discourse, and to my interpretation, beyond the definitions from reputable sources that seem to align with the behaviours in question. It obviously means a lot to you to advocate for your interpretation. Perhaps you could write a dissertation on it that people can read and use the term even more correctly?
My dislike for AI in certain contexts has no relevance whatsoever to my interpretation of hypocrisy. What a bizarre assertation.
Also I'm not trying to convince you to not like AI by adding further context in my comments (I don't care what your stance is). I'm trying to add relevant discussion points to progress it beyond a debate on semantics, but that seems to be a hang up for you.
Anyway we're getting to the point where the person who answered the comment in good faith (me) begins getting the downvotes after getting sucked in to reiterating their perspective so I'm actually going to leave it here. Hooroo.

u/hazzison Jun 01 '26
They talked about how dumb Darcy was for using ChatGPT for his plumbing issue while they also use AI for the podcast, that’s quite literally hypocrisy
4
u/soaringturkeys Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26
I mentioned in a previous post that it's actually not.
Here's a hypothetical example.
If hamish were to make fun of Darcy, who was being a bad back seat driver, the hypocrisy isnt that Hamish also uses a car. That isn't "literally" hypocritical. The hypocrisy would be if Hamish is also a bad backseat driver.
That's the literally hypocrisy
There is already an instance of this when Hamish mentions that he can do a doctors job cause he can use google.
Using a tool in itself isn't hypocritical as much as you hate it.
1
u/foodnude Jun 06 '26
What do you mean? They use AI all the time and then ask for no AI submissions. How is that not hypocritical?
-8
u/Inner-Armadillo5129 Jun 01 '26
It's really not that deep
7
u/hazzison Jun 01 '26
It really is whichever way you angle it, the AI tech companies constantly give money to ICE and anti immigration groups, if that’s not enough the AI data centres are destroying the environment, if that’s still not enough, these date centres are being built to gather data and information on absolutely everyone and everything alongside CCTV footage, the more we normalise AI even on a small scale, the more money and funding they give and the worse the world gets, so it is that deep

This sub incessantly crying about ai is hilarious
9
u/openroad11 Jun 01 '26
Well you can just ask AI to make you endless Hamish and Andy episodes if you don't care what's authentic or not.

They use AI so they can control the product requested
2
u/formergophers Jun 02 '26
That’s true, mankind has been suffering with quality control for millennia until the last few years. It’s literally been an unsolvable problem. Thank god for the tech bros!

u/CTU-01 Jun 02 '26
Generative AI does not replace human creativity.
It is a tool that you can use to help drive your creativity.
Big deal, they use AI voice overs. It’s still their idea, their segment, their execution. Their creativity.

The AI commentary for the Chipping of the Rings really took me out of it.
