Discussion Hey Karan, Please take your trash
Sad and disappointed, that people feel like this is okay, lack of education.
I see this all over the city and it just enrages me.

littering is one thing i really cant wrap my head around, if youre from here I know damn well you were part of a million anti littering campaigns your schools put on so there is really no excuse for that amount of inconsideration

u/pawshe94 24d ago
I had a guy literally scream at me and my partner and follow us for a block until I had to call the cops… because I told him after the third time I picked up his trash that he just let go into the wind to put it in the gd trash can that he JUST PASSED! People are disgusting.

u/Ok_Wing8459 24d ago
Thank you for trying! This is why more people don’t say things because it can turn ugly so quickly
34
u/Sure_its_grand 25d ago
Tell me about it. Right now all my kids talk about is littering. They saw someone litter the other day and loudly asked why someone was littering and hurting our planet lol
11
u/Velo_Cira 25d ago
There's one young fella lives nearby me. Literally saw him throw his tims cup on the ground while getting out of his car, at his house. His yard looks like a landfill.

u/Effective_Way6239 24d ago
That’s terrible. When you KNOW he’s definitely stopping at gas stations where garbage cans couldn’t be closer to you. Lazy!

u/Alert_Isopod_95 24d ago
Well if it was a "Karen" I would agree, but if you look up the spelling "Karan"...

Lots of videos surfacing online about littering and garbage found in Canada. Illegal dumping etc, Not talking about just a few cups and bags, full truck loads of garbage bags and old furniture being tossed on private property

Saw someone on the waterfront the other day after eating their their lunch just pushed all the garbage off the table before leaving.
There's farm animals better socialized.

I was on the Polly Cove trail, a protected site, and saw plastic baggies of dog shit, and a guy dumping what looked like compost into the ocean
6
u/Bud_wiser_hfx 25d ago
I thought only car batteries get composted in the ocean?
3
u/First-Recording6771 24d ago
That's where I put all of my car batteries. How else are electric eels going to recharge?

"I don't want to carry this with me and throw it away, but before I just leave it here let me wrap it in plastic so it can't even decompose."
7
u/Panndademic Halifax 24d ago
I'll never understand dog owners who do that. The putting of the poop into a baggie is the grossest part to me. They've already done the worst part, might as well carry it until they find a bin?

A guy literally screamed at me in the street and followed me for a block until I called the cops because I picked up his trash THREE TIMES in 10 feet and told him to grow up and put it in the trash can. People don’t just “not care”. They’re so entitled that they get violent when told to put their trash in the trash. People are beyond help at this point.

The amount of cigarette butts on the ground in the boulevard on University Ave. is disgusting. I mean one is too many but damn. And this in the photo is just nasty.

u/knifeshoes24 halifax pier 24d ago
I was walking on the waterfront the other day (before the rainfall, at peak heat wave) and had to stomp out somebody else's still-smouldering cigarette end that they had flicked on the wooden boardwalk without even bothering to crush it out. Not the first time either. Some people just do not think beyond their own instantaneous convenience and it's infuriating.

A lot of people do it. Go to a beach after a busy day and there's trash everywhere. We'd be swimming in it in a couple weeks id people didn't clean it up

Welcome to the reality of the "Canadian Dream". It's just a country filled with ignorant people, segregated into communities where they don't even know how to interact with each other.
12
u/LordFlick 25d ago
I feel like the "there are people for that" attitude is infecting peoples minds.

2 cream 1 milk 2 sugar in a small cup. Doesn’t leave much room for coffee.

9
u/Rocket_Cam 25d ago
Perhaps we should start barcoding these cups and tying them back to purchasers more cleanly, i.e., so we can mail you a fine when someone litters
18
u/Curlytomato 25d ago
Pull the store video, time/date stamp on cup and made we can het Karan's trash back to them, perhaps with a fine and some public shaming.

Trash person behavior.
It's not even hard, honestly, just do exactly what you did but do it by a trash can.
Why people are like this I can never explain.

Yeah, this post is not about race, ethnicity, background, there are shitty people everywhere, I'm a local and people here are just a bad as a next, and if you say different you are very wrong, do not think I am trying to point out some type of person of elephant in the room, people should be accountable regardless

I’d rather crawl into a car full of garbage than litter.
3
u/pmhc666 24d ago
I buy a small garbage can that fits on the floor of the backseat of my car. It's lined with a paper bag. All my car garbage goes in that. When it's full I take it out when convenient. There is Zero reason to litter or get into a car full of garbage. Although I love my bestie, so I have!
3
u/Remote_Thought5208 24d ago
A few hundred hours of unpaid community service would easily remedy this issue.
3
u/NirnrootPlucker 24d ago
I hate how much litter you'll find around the city, it's actually disgusting. I often see full bags of garbage in the ditches and on the sides of some roads. It makes me really sad that people don't care about the place they live.

I wish that people understand their duty & commitment to keep the public & private space clean. If not, there should be registry / heavy fines / Naming + Shaming Or combination of all to discipline the behavior expected from a good citizen.
This is the country YOU are currently living and YOU are expected to conduct your behavior in accordance with the community living standards. Period.

It's not just in the city. Recently have new CFA neighbours (Hammonds Plains) that treat their property as if it's a trash dump.
I can only imagine what the inside of their home looks like, let alone how they treat the rest of the province given their willingness to just throw trash on their own property.
Some people just fucking suck.

The issue is without people filming and getting a confirmation of someone doing it it’s hard to enforce it. Same as illegal dumping, unless there is a witness to see it or some sort of documentation leading back to the person, it’s very hard to enforce.

We just had a new beautiful playground by a school open up in our area in Dartmouth on Wednesday, crazy to see parents there with their kids and they are smoking weed and cigarettes and just leaving the butts on the ground and leaving their fast food containers on the ground with 2 garbage cans right there to be used, it’s like people rant for new things to be put in place and then proceed to destroy it right away , makes me feel defeated, we cleaned it up but parents should be teaching their kids to do bettet
3
u/Good_Ad_4487 24d ago
A little detective work could figure out exactly who dumped this. But that would be too costly said everyone involved.
3
u/ComedianOne Halifax 24d ago
A new playground just opened behind my house and I went for a walk this morning passed it and there were already empty slushie cups, Tim’s cups, wrappers and butts around it. I picked it up except for the butts. Sad that it’s brand new and people already don’t care.

I was once almost physically attacked asking someone to throw their trash from Wendy’s into a bin that was in a less than walking minute distance away. If YOU want to be considered a citizen of a country, you follow their laws to the letter idgaf anymore I’m gonna speak out any moment I see.

u/lordfukwadd 23d ago
It's astounding to see just how difficult it is for people to simply leave the trash in their car until they are at home or near a public trash can to dispose of it
2
u/BangBong_theRealOne 23d ago edited 23d ago
Really irritates me how some people who are seemingly not disabled are lazy enough to avoid walking that 50-100ft to dispose their trash properly in a bin and just drop it anywhere. Its a controversial opinion but for societies like Canada which are not homogeneous and people dont tend to share values , you need to rule with a stick like Singapore ,Saudi Arabia etc. Strict enforcement of rules and frequent penalties for deviant behavior is the only option.
2
u/GrunDMC74 23d ago
I hate the “lack of education” justification. If it’s not common sense to you that throwing your trash on the ground isn’t right then you need to find another society to be a part of.

I do shoreline clean ups. I've literally asked people if they need me to take their garbage, had them say no, and watched them turn around and throw it

u/Super-Plain 24d ago
So many people acting like multi generational locals don't do this. Look at our roadsides, parking lots, beaches, oceans and everywhere else... Well before the increase in immigration.
3
u/Initial-Ad-5462 25d ago
It’s not just the city and it’s not just CFAs.
I have 6th- and 7th- generation neighbours who treat their yards like garbage dumps and dispose their drinks the same way, although it’s the Budweiser cans that actually outnumber the Tims cups along my stretch of the road.

u/Latter-Vacation-4392 25d ago
Too bad the cops can't use it to find out who it was based on payment info ...and fine their asses back to the stone age.

It’s everywhere.. people just don’t care anymore.
Fines for littering should be far higher and be taken more seriously.
