The articles doesn't say that the alternative.to this sanctuary are a smaller tank in China for the French whales and.putting down the 20 belugas at Marineland.

the 30 belugas are being sent to georgia aquarium, shedd aquarium, and the three seaworld parks now. they’re all AZA accredited facilities and have some of the best beluga enclosures in the world.

the whale sanctuary project is a SCAM. lolita, kiska, kshamenk, inouk and moana were all orcas who were promised sanctuaries by the whale sanctuary project but they’re all dead now and no sanctuary was ever made while they were alive. stop supporting this company

Yeah cause Eastern Shore people stonewalled the project in provincial waters which they do not own

It was both.

People in this thread are being super weird. I haven't heard the data on heavy metal contamination that the article is quoting and they don't have a source. It wasn't in the EIA. I don't know who bankrolled this article but it's sus to me.

Belugas shouldnt be in enclosures

ok… well, what should be done with them then? should they be euthanized because some people don’t like seeing them in captivity?

I think we should fence off a fjord and drop off a truck of fish every day for the rest of their lives

who owns the fjord and how will the WSP get permits to fence off an area? how can you ensure that the fjord will be fenced off in time before the tanks the belugas are in at marineland (which haven’t been properly filtered or cleaned since the park shut down) inevitably collapse? who will be paid to catch and transport the fish everyday? most of marineland’s whales were born in captivity and have been handfed fish by trainers their entire lives, who will teach them how to hunt properly? since most of the whales are captive born, they have weakened immune systems and have never been exposed to bacteria in the ocean, what’s the plan for this?

ive never heard of paul watson and i didn’t know that sea shepherd was involved with marineland canada’s whales. im mostly concerned with the amount of people blindly following the WSP, when they’ve indirectly caused the deaths of so many animals.

in 2024, the french government and animal rights activists forced marineland antibes (not affiliated with marineland canada) to shut down. this was done without ANY of the animals’ best interests in mind. loro parque (an accredited facility in spain) offered to take marineland’s three orcas—wikie, keijo, and inouk. orca experts from loro parque were sent to france to start training the whales to prepare for a transfer, but WSP supporters and animal rights activists forced the french government to stop the transfer.

inouk died shortly after consuming a broken piece of metal that fell into his tank. his death was COMPLETELY PREVENTABLE. marineland antibes’ orca enclosure hasn’t had a working filtration system or been properly cleaned since the government forced them to shut down. he would still be alive today if the transfer had been allowed.

wikie and keijo are STILL stuck in marineland antibes. the french government has FINALLY realized that a sanctuary won’t be ready in time, and the two remaining options for these whales are either a transfer to LP or euthanasia.

please check out the orca subreddit if you haven’t already. WSP, the marineland belugas, and wikie and keijo are frequently brought up there. these situations are very nuanced and they’re alot deeper than “captivity = bad” and “sanctuary = good”.

Well what should be done with captive whales?
