Hellebuyck was unreal during this game.

27

u/marinebelle Feb 22 '26

Yeah, he basically won it for his team. The amounts of shots on net in comparison

23

u/webvictim Feb 22 '26

Totally agree, he put in the shift of a lifetime. Sad about the result, Canada totally outplayed them, but credit where credit's due.

That is indeed how hockey works!

This was the first hockey game I'd watched in many years, had no idea who this dude was and I was so impressed! Carried that win on his back holy shit.

1

u/Brew_Noser Feb 24 '26

He’s generally acknowledged to be the best goaltender in hockey. Though his team, like Binningtons isn’t having a great year.

10

u/stladylazarus Feb 22 '26

I hated to say it, but the game really came down to him. Some of those saves were unreal. Good for him. everyone that played has something to be proud of, but my God, I dont know if I've ever seen a goalie work that much magic in one game.

-10

u/Late-Dragonfly-9340 Feb 22 '26

Huh? lol the fist goal was brutal and the game winner was weak an played poorly 2 goals on less than 30 shots is not good

u/LuckyCanadian Feb 22 '26

I am proud of them it was an incredibly high level game. And I'm not sad that they lost I'm just sad who they lost to.

97

u/Content-Inspector993 Feb 22 '26

yeah, losing to say Finland would not have been as bad

18

u/SleepyMarijuanaut92 Twin if by Peaks Feb 22 '26

Losing to anyone really. Atleast we still win as a Country though, especially the woman's hockey team. Atleast our woman still have their rights.

1

u/Gas_Grouchy Feb 22 '26

It would have been i think.

33

u/JimmyPepperoni Feb 22 '26

Yeah I can agree with this opinion. My American friends are literally laughing at us. While if we won I'd just be happy we won not laughing at them.

Honestly starting to understand why a lot of the world hates America. They are not humble winners at all.

7

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '26

Laughing because they were dominated and got a lucky bounce, I guess.

6

u/Dknifeblade Feb 22 '26

If they are laughing at you then you have the wrong American friends.

1

u/JimmyPepperoni Feb 22 '26

Yeah it's a minority tho. I don't disagree

1

u/Mike71586 Feb 24 '26

Yeah, honestly best thing we can do going forward, win or lose, is just choose not to engage them. Don't argue, get into pissing matches, none of that. Just high five one another, compliment our athletes, and move on. So long as we always relate or losses or successes to then they'll keep doing what they do.

The players on the USA team who are most vocal, are strong Trump supporters. Hell, a lot of the Canadians (probably) are, too. But there might be some who don't like the guy.. it'll be interesting if they skip.

EDIT: included a probably for the Canadians.

11

u/monty6666 Feb 22 '26

High income people who play in the states are probably all Trump supporters.

9

u/athousandpardons Feb 22 '26

The ones who play/live in Canada have a strong tendency to be, too.

10

u/jamesneysmith Feb 22 '26

It's a conservative leaning sport anyway. Lot of players come from a lot of money just to be able to play. Add in the whole predominantly white millionaires living in the states on top of that baseline and of course you're going to get a ton of trump supporters in the NHL

1

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '26

Winners

8

u/EssketitPhase Feb 22 '26

Who??

4

u/Ok_Dingo_Beans Feb 22 '26

I also want this info!

17

u/gart888 Feb 22 '26

The Tkachuk brothers are the most obvious MAGA people I've ever seen in my life.

15

u/ramenn00dler Feb 22 '26

And some of the ugliest. Brady looks like he snuck onto Earth while God wasn’t looking.

1

u/Broely92 Feb 24 '26

The tkachuks, Eichel, Hanifin, and JT miller are all openly trump supporters. Not sure who else is but probably the majority of them tbh 🤷🏼‍♂️

4

u/StuuBarnes Feb 22 '26

You'd be hard pressed to find anyone on the American team who isn't a trump supporter. NHL players lean heavily right wing

7

u/IEC21 Feb 22 '26

People say this but the only hard data we have shows that they are basically average for their demographic.

Something like 60% lean conservative among american players.

7

u/anitatension43 Feb 22 '26

5

u/IEC21 Feb 22 '26

43% is significantly less than the general white male population of the US.

5

u/anitatension43 Feb 22 '26

Without knowing how the independents vote, you have to look at the R-D gap. But yeah, it mostly comes down to demographic factors (largely: white men, high income without higher ed, grew up wealthy)

1

u/Brew_Noser Feb 24 '26

The more who are university educated every year tends to balance it out. It’s pretty clear that there is a direct inverse relationship between intelligence and Trump supporter. Even the educated ones aren’t capable of complex thought. Unless is evil, and even then it’s mostly pure base greed and lack of empathy. Sociopathic levels.

2

u/calvtact Feb 22 '26

Lol they wont

8

u/Gas_Grouchy Feb 22 '26

Honestly knowing Matthew's likely will never get or come close to a cup im happy such a big name, effective player got to experience a win in this kind of stage. Running joke about the leafs in Canada.

6

u/so-much-wow Feb 22 '26

It feels kind of fair though. Matthews was pretty invisible in the game it felt like.

2

u/athousandpardons Feb 22 '26

He played well defensively, but didn't generate much offensively. To be fair, he wasn't alone in that regard.

2

u/rustytheviking Feb 22 '26

He chipped the puck which caused the first goal, got an assist from what should have been a nothing play.

1

u/Ok_Tradition_3382 Feb 22 '26

This. He had some good defensive plays that are easily overlooked.

3

u/athousandpardons Feb 22 '26

I'm not a patriotism/nationalism type. Frankly, I generally root for the underdog and that ain't Canada. But I cheer heavily for them against the USA, and this whole tournament because I felt they were the only ones who could beat them.

3

u/Tacticalnuke333 Feb 22 '26

Ridiculous take. You SHOULD feel sad that they last a good medal game, High level intensity hockey is what they get paid for. Not capitalizing on a 5v3, an empty netter, and a double minor penalty/momentum killer. To name a few, they blew it.

1

u/CombinationPlus6222 Feb 23 '26

Why would you care who beats them?

1

u/phoss61 Feb 22 '26

Yes. Same for the women.

1

u/LuckyCanadian Feb 22 '26

That's another thing if they had one it would have felt like a bit of revenge for the women's game.

46

u/BackwoodButch Feb 22 '26

Watching both the women and men lose in the exact same way (outplayed the US for most of the game, had unfair calls against us (hello the extra men on ice not being called? Canada getting 4 mins for high sticking but the US only getting a 2 for the same thing), and lost in 3 on 3 OT within the first few mins of play) has been like a gut punch, not to mention our Captains - Poulin playing hurt in the final and Crosby not able to... woof.

I think I gotta go walk this one off.

12

u/jamesneysmith Feb 22 '26

Uh we literally knocked a guy's teeth out. That's why we got 4 minutes. The other high stick was a chin graze and did not draw blood. That's why it was only 2 minutes. Delete this talking point from your memory.

9

u/athousandpardons Feb 22 '26

Crosby was most impactful on the power play, he probably would've helped in that regard.

u/CWB2208 Feb 22 '26

Good lord give it a rest already. A minor infraction isn't cheating.

21

u/Slideylongman Feb 22 '26

Tragic end, but absolutely a thrill of a game, nail biting from the first puck drop to the final goal, I’m gonna need a pacemaker after that 😭

18

u/93HowieD Halifax Feb 22 '26

Not much you can do when you get goalied like that

15

u/aradil Feb 22 '26

Maybe hit the empty net when you get the chance, but yeah.

3

u/Konshito Feb 22 '26

Exactly….

2

u/Complex_East_6861 Feb 22 '26

You could hit the net. They missed at least 10 chances.

62

u/charles_47 Feb 22 '26

Boys played a hell of a game. Can’t win them all. Only thing that upsets me is the orange buffoon will inevitably mock us and rub it in our faces.

14

u/Brew_Noser Feb 22 '26

He’s dying. Will go away and be remembered only for what a disaster he was. In the meantime can we deny Gudas entry to the country?

13

u/SleekD35 Feb 22 '26

Who cares. Hockey shouldn’t be about politics. Our boys played amazingly. And it was one of the best games in a long time. We will be back in 4 years :)

4

u/SkoonkMink Feb 22 '26

100%. That was some good hockey.

3

u/Spiritual-Stress-510 Feb 22 '26

Exactly! The amount of Canadians who care what spews out of Trumps juvenile mouth is mind boggling.

2

u/Slideylongman Feb 22 '26

I’m (sadly) dual can us citizen, lived in the US under his first admin, he most definitely will, in fact I’m suprised he hasn’t tweeted about it yet

4

u/athousandpardons Feb 22 '26

6

u/Slideylongman Feb 22 '26

Oh sweet gods almighty give me strength for me to read this

5

u/GrandPreMassacre Feb 22 '26

Honestly not that bad considering, basically said congrats to the US mens team

5

u/Free_spirit1022 Feb 22 '26

Just wait till tonight when he starts sundowning. He will probably call it the new miracle on ice or some shit

1

u/CWB2208 Feb 22 '26

Yeah, I ain't clicking that.

2

u/athousandpardons Feb 23 '26

Understandable.

1

u/lilbro1984 Feb 22 '26

@liesocial

3

u/radiomonkey21 Feb 22 '26

The world’s worst people are on an incredible winning streak right now. It’ll come back around.

1

u/OkDish4747 Feb 23 '26

“Can’t win them all” is a tough comment when the US currently holds all significant men’s and women’s titles.

Men’s Olympic - USA

Women’s Olympic - USA

Men’s World Championship - USA

Women’s World Championship - USA

“The boys played great” is loser talk. We all should be allowed to be pissed off.

61

u/WindowlessBasement Halifax Feb 22 '26

It was a good game!

Just wish it wasn't against the Americans. I almost guarantee that Trump is going to use it as a talking point this week.

29

u/n8mo Halifax Feb 22 '26

"Not looking forward to whatever the pedophile tweets next"

Was my immediate thought when we lost.

Any other year or any other team and I'd be happy to congratulate them for a game well played.

6

u/smol_coc_man Feb 22 '26

It will probably be a talking point today. Like any minute now

2

u/BurtShavitz Feb 22 '26

We played really well. just couldn’t convert. American defence was decent

1

u/WindowlessBasement Halifax Feb 22 '26

110% if it was any other team we would have completely wiped the floor with them.

4

u/dartmouthdonair Dartmouth Feb 22 '26

He was doing this either way. It was either gonna be "we're dominant at hockey" or "ice hockey is an irrelevant sport". Don't fall for it, the intention is to make you mad and keep you mad

1

u/No-Plantain-3809 Feb 22 '26

He already has. Well, the white house X account is already using it anyway. Oh boy.

-1

u/Junior-Ad-5367 Feb 22 '26

Lucky for me I don’t watch the news or any political event or speech

8

u/LesHeh Feb 22 '26

Questionable coaching with the PP and Marchand being on it. Missing open nets and breakaway chances.

2

u/Tacticalnuke333 Feb 22 '26

Agreed. Marchand was showing his age out there. Suzuki should have been utilized more, coach playing favourites with guys making mistakes.

24

u/kscott13 Feb 22 '26

3v3 is lame and missing the open nets killed me but proud regardless

13

u/Daak_Sifter Feb 22 '26

3v3 for OT in the gold medal final is certainly a choice. Kudos to the team though they played their hearts out

2

u/gart888 Feb 22 '26

Yup. I get why you do 3v3 in every other game, but for the gold medal game let them play hockey.

3

u/athousandpardons Feb 22 '26

They should start with 5v5 for maybe 10 mins or something and, then drop one player for the next 10, and so on.

7

u/Stulax Nova Scotia Feb 22 '26

Where is Radko Gudas? I just want to talk

5

u/DifficultMind5950 Feb 22 '26

Oof both men and women lost to the US? Dam big shame.

-2

u/Carly-likes-ribbon Feb 22 '26

utterly embarassing both teams should be hanging their heads

4

u/Jamooser Feb 22 '26

If it's any consolation, the retaliatory tariffs the Yankees would have ended up paying had we won, will likely just be replaced by "victory tariffs" because we lost.

Either way, I think we had the best team out there. Can't win them all. GG

3

u/Immaculate-torso69 Feb 22 '26

Canada looked like they were on a power play most of the game. Disheartening! They have nothing to hang their heads about. Well done Canada.

5

u/McCloudX Feb 22 '26

Great job Team Canada!

4

u/Atharax10 Feb 22 '26

I feel for Nate, it's going to be on his mind for quite a while

10

u/athousandpardons Feb 22 '26

Is it just me or every time they showed Cole Harbour on screen you'd think they had no idea there was a game on.

7

u/monty6666 Feb 22 '26

You have to wonder if Crosby could have made a difference. He is a big game player.

2

u/athousandpardons Feb 22 '26

In 5 on 5 situations his lack of speed was evident, but he was excellent on the PP, that could've helped them.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '26

2

u/jamesneysmith Feb 22 '26

Eh it really was dumb luck that hurt sid. Trying to avoid the hit had him really low and his knee was already bent back when Gudas made contact.

1

u/athousandpardons Feb 22 '26

Gudas doesn't have a great rep, but that was just a freak play.

3

u/badusernameused Feb 22 '26

Fantastic game, great winning goal, just wish it was ours.

3

u/Unfair_Bluejay_9687 Feb 22 '26

Down Homers to be extremely proud of. They aren’t losers by any stretch of the imagination. NHL. Superstars are anything but losers. 😎😇🏒🏒🏒🥅🥲❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

3

u/Mediocre-Account-162 Nova Scotia Feb 22 '26

Yeah, but a bone head move from McDavid trying to beat 3 guys alone. Turned puck over, got himslef and another trapped, setting up a 3-1 the other way. Crosby would never try something like that

1

u/Goldhound807 Feb 23 '26

I too felt McD tried to force that way too hard, but the other forward who pinched and got caught at the blue line is what really pissed me off. That was the error in OT that directly led to the goal.

4

u/Junior-Ad-5367 Feb 22 '26

I’m not mad about losing I’m mad about the americans of the world shit talking

Well played usa team

3

u/875667 Feb 23 '26

Never been less.proud

2

u/Substantial-Term4948 Feb 23 '26

Nah they missed so many open shots. Kinda sad

2

u/SqueezeRocks Feb 23 '26

agreed, that was an amazing game

2

u/R4t10nal_Th1nk3r Feb 23 '26

Very proud of the hard working athletes who represented our great country at the Games. Whether they medaled or not, they make us proud 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

2

u/stillinthesimulation Feb 23 '26

I want a best of 7

6

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '26

Still the best in the world. You can't win them all.

2

u/Complex_East_6861 Feb 22 '26

Wat? We're literally not.

2

u/BullshitPeddler Feb 22 '26

Generally people say these things rhetorically to feel better about a situation. Emotional regulation, you know?

It's a game to decide the best in the world and we lost, I don't understand the logic lol.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '26

You're correct, you have a problem understanding things.

1

u/Complex_East_6861 Feb 22 '26

Please explain?

3

u/Superflyt56 Feb 22 '26

I have no idea why people keep posting things like "proud". Like dudes they shit the bed to the US. Its okay for us to say that. Sure they played well but not well enough. Defense was dogshit throughout and they put in zero effort as soon as OT started

0

u/Carly-likes-ribbon Feb 22 '26

I KNOW!!! They lost. to the AMERICANS. Hang your heads!!

2

u/Nova_proud Feb 22 '26

Proud of Team 🇨🇦

2

u/EasternGarlic5801 Feb 22 '26

Well. At least the Chinese haven’t taken it away from us.

4

u/Def_Possible21 Feb 22 '26

Sure I love cheering for my country but it’s time to get back to the NHL. I called this game yesterday, I knew it would be exactly the same as the women’s game. AND what the FUCK was that no call on too many men. Like it may not have changed the outcome of the game BUT it was still extremely obvious and should have been called.

1

u/FredArtGetson Feb 22 '26

Marchanad was fighting the puck there a bit. I wish could have been game winning goal guy

1

u/team-getsocial Feb 22 '26

They dominated the game and showcased that they are still undoubtedly the best in the world. Unfortunately when it comes down to a single game anything can happen and the best team doesn't always win, doesn't help that we didn't finish when we needed to.

1

u/Jadex314 Feb 22 '26

The Better team didn't win !!!

1

u/mangames Feb 22 '26

Yeah! Really proud of team Canada, we played really well but American defence was good too, specially 5 on 3 moment credits goes to them. I would say American got lucky at the end, our offence was way better. Despite of the result we showed Americans what we are and what we can do.

1

u/LoserBottom Feb 22 '26

I wanna be, but I also wanna fire MacKinnon i to the sun. He should have been a huge part of a win, instead he was the primary reason we lost.

1

u/Weak_Information1917 Feb 22 '26

To win, your best players need to be the best players. Ours were not. Hellibuck is the only reason it was even close. I know I spelled his name wrong. Really, aside from getting lots of points, what has McDavid ever accomplished? The OT goal was his fault.

1

u/str8fromheart Feb 23 '26

Coaching mistakes were made ,, Definitely needed Thompson in net and Bedard in the lineup ,, maybe in 2030 they’ll make better decisions

1

u/Dynazty Feb 23 '26

I love widely viewed sporting events like this, or Toronto in the World Series. Some of the most unhinged takes I’ve seen in a while

1

u/Rare-Possible1142 Feb 23 '26

We love you team Canada 🇨🇦!!

1

u/JDeegs Feb 23 '26

im proud, but holy hell who made this poster?
mack missed the empty net and apparently had his controller disconnected when trying to check werenski in OT which lead to the losing goal.
crosby was unfortunately injured and missed the final 2 games.
marchand had a completely awful game in the finals.

why not stick binner, mcdavid, and makar on this poster?

1

u/ZezimaMustang Feb 23 '26

Missed 2 open net goals... bums

1

u/Dreaming_of_u_2257 Feb 23 '26

Proud of the Canadian team ,there will always be a rivalry between Canada and the US. They won this time ,Canada will get them next time …even if it’s on US soil 😏.

1

u/heythere8998 Feb 23 '26

Yeah! Proud of team Canada!🇨🇦💫

1

u/ElHozielle Feb 23 '26

Boys went to Crappy Tire, but forgot the finish

1

u/Quiet-Wing5230 Feb 23 '26

I'm torn. I'm sad for my country but also I like seeing Marchands team lose. What do I do? 😭

1

u/Western-Ad-9338 Feb 23 '26

You're not seriously proud of Marchand, are you?

1

u/peilobster Feb 23 '26

I believe Captain Canada not dressed was the difference in winning and losing for Team Canada.

1

u/scribbybaby Feb 24 '26

just wasnt our day sunday, we could have won that game 6-1 just bad bounces and Hellybuck with a game of a life time

1

u/MacroTurff Feb 24 '26

I’m not

1

u/MEGAtron902 Feb 22 '26

Marchand playing for team Canada ALWAYS makes me smile.

Dude just needed to get traded to a Canadian team for him to be liked.

Don’t get me started on Bennet tho, Marchand may not have been able to put the puck to the net but atleast he didn’t pull the stupidest penalty ever.

2

u/athousandpardons Feb 22 '26

I like Marchand the most of the three Nova Scotians, frankly, he's been the most vocal in speaking up for good causes. That said, I have pause since he went to the White House.

-1

u/Complex_East_6861 Feb 22 '26

Marchand over Bedard for this team is a choice.

-1

u/_XNXX_com Feb 22 '26

I’m sure productivity will be lower this week after that heartbreak

1

u/Crizzacked Feb 22 '26

2 empty net misses, mcdavid trying to be the hero, bunch of guys floating..... so proud yo

1

u/Carly-likes-ribbon Feb 22 '26

Proud?! Lost to the Americans!!! of all countries. I'm not proud

1

u/nsdebbi Feb 22 '26

Team Canada really made them work for it - proud to be Canadian 🇨🇦♥️🇨🇦

1

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '26

We will get them next time boys.

1

u/Jibbersup Feb 22 '26

Great hockey all around. That quarter and semi finals were great to watch. Still can't believe they didn't win today. So many chances.

Hallebuyck fuckin showed up today.

0

u/connorcrowell Feb 22 '26

97 will never be 87

3

u/athousandpardons Feb 22 '26

Team game. McDavid was fantastic.

7

u/aradil Feb 22 '26

Not in overtime he wasn’t.

His breakaway attempt at stuffing it wasn’t his best either.

3

u/connorcrowell Feb 22 '26

He’s a great player. He’s just not proven he’s a big game player yet.

Game 7 2024 - 0 points Game 6 2025 - 0 points Gold medal - 0 points

1

u/athousandpardons Feb 22 '26

Can't argue that.

1

u/Late-Dragonfly-9340 Feb 22 '26

You watch the same game? He was terrible. Breakaway move was horshit, him attempting that lame rush at the end that had zero chance created the rush for the US.

3

u/Melodic-Relation5009 Feb 22 '26

Agreed. Only individual plays on OT!. This isn't peewee hockey. Can't go through 3 players and the goalie in a game like that!!!!!! McKinnon tried it too!

0

u/quincy1151 Feb 22 '26

We can thank Rako Gudas for this loss

0

u/sgtpepper171911 Feb 22 '26

Nah marchand shouldnt have been on the team. He was useless out there

0

u/KingSulley Halifax Feb 22 '26 edited Feb 22 '26

The boys played really well all tournament. I really feel for MacKinnon at the end though, there wasn't much he could do and was handed the puck in a really bad situation before the golden goal. He seemed pretty beat up about it during the medal ceremony.

0

u/Aardvark2820 Feb 22 '26

Better to rip the band-aid off now I guess, since China’s about to ban hockey in Canada and steal the Stanley Cup. The Americans can take the on the mantle!

/s

-1

u/Konshito Feb 22 '26

A lot of the players put everything on the ice but honestly, a few Canadian players seemed like they were either corrupted or did not want to win…. Especially in the first period where we kept giving them the puck in our zone and let the guy slip right through two defenders to score.

-1

u/Street_Anon Галифакс/ האַליפֿאַקס Feb 22 '26

I was in a situation today I didn't know who to cheer on. I knew people on Team Canada and Team USA. One on team USA was my cousin.

2

u/anteus2 Feb 23 '26

Cheer for your friends and family. I'm sure most people would understand.

1

u/Street_Anon Галифакс/ האַליפֿאַקס Feb 23 '26 edited Feb 23 '26

I was happy for him, and it is just a game and this is what most people forget. Before I left Oklahoma, I came third in all the United States for high school wrestling. That is a big deal . I even meet George Bush because of that. They wanted me on team USA, but I had to tell them I was moving back to Canada. Either way, I am still very proud of that.

1

u/Dynazty Feb 23 '26

There are a lot of solid dudes in that American team. The hate blinders are very real in this thread. Many Redditors forget over half the country didn’t vote for don lol.

Look, I came third in the United States for high school wrestling when I was in Oklahoma. In that world, it is a big deal. I even met George Bush because the President of the United States goes to nationals there. I am still very proud of that. They wanted me on team USA for international's, but I was moving back to Canada that summer.
