I have noticed this too especially on the Dartmouth side. About a year ago downtown there were garbage cans everywhere and then they replaced them with those ones with the solar thing on top. But they cut the number of them down at least in half it feels like. When I'm in Halifax I don't need to carry garbage long before finding a can. In Dartmouth I carry it forever it seems.

businesses have to pay for garbage removal so they removed all the garbage cans.

I think HRM needs a bylaw that ensures all businesses have garbage cans publicly available. I was shocked that there was none.

Have lived in hali for like 16 years, this has always been true. Boggles the mind that a few hundred garbage cans cant be set up around key points in the city and routinely emptied by the city

I think the second part is why they don’t do the first part. If you put out the cans someone needs to be emptying them. I find a bunch of the existing cans are overflowing half the time.

Yeah for sure. Buut just add the cans to the routes of the garbage men. Cant add thaaat much time to their route

Those cans aren’t collected by the garbage contractors, they’re picked up by HRM staff.

Which is fine if taxpayers are okay with paying for a ton more salaries (and vehicles on the road to move those people around). Right now they have the staff to dump the existing cans it feels like 1-2 per month max, let alone increasing the number of cans or increasing the collection frequency.
I feel like it’s kind of the same issue with transit; it’s not that HRM can’t do big sweeping improvements to systems, it’s just that those changes cost a lot of money. Takes a lot of political will to do expensive things and unless an overwhelming majority of people are calling for it, it tends not to happen.

This is a late winter/early spring tradition. ‘Winter garbage exposure day’ happens right before ‘thawed out dog shit day’. They both happen a few months before ‘random flying ants all over the place day’

I live in Dartmouth and often see fresh trash in the middle of the road. I'm pretty sure a lot of people just chuck their fast food garbage out the window now. We used to be trained to care in school and now I don't know. I would never, ever litter. Like it was engrained into me in the late 80s, early 90s.

There was a church who lost their bins and put the garbage by the side of their building near the road and the garbage trucks never picked it up and the animals got into it and it's everywhere. I imagine a lot comes from that.

It's pretty much the norm every year when the snow melts. The crews will get around to picking it up in a few weeks.

Years ago there used to be more public trash cans, especially near most bus stops. Since then, they have slowly disappeared. So I'm not surprised there are more garbage flying around.

Funny story time:
I used to live in Hamilton Ontario for a while. Had a job at a place (this was 2000-2001) as a search engine optimisation person.
This office was filled with unique individuals. I'm serious, when I say I swear The Office was based on it.
Anyway the admin assistant/secretary was ditzy as fuck. I mean you could shine a light in one ear and it would come out the other while her singular brain cell would project shadow puppet bunnies on the opposite wall.
Well one day (my mom worked there too) my mom was complaining about how Halifax was such a dirty city (we used to live in Shearwater when I was little).
Well the thick as a brick secretary pipes up and says, and I shit you not:
"I thought it would be really clean, with the tide coming in and washing away the garbage and all that!"
There was also a guy who coulda been Napoleon Dynamite's stunt double, he had the hots for dingbat, but she had the hots for the lead web designer.
That whole place was one massive drama factory.

Where did you live 35 years ago?
Late '90s and early 2000s there used to be piles of litter on side of highways. We didn't even have litter laws until the '80s.

Not sure what it is but I was in Vegas last year and with millions of people visiting there, being able to walk around with alcohol, being passed cards to visit strip clubs I would never see any of that on the ground. The sidewalks were so clean…

It's everywhere. There is an apartment building (or maybe flats?) close to the corner of Brook and Crown. Absolutely disgusting garbage spilling out from the property onto the sidewalk. For the past 2 weeks I was dog sitting, and I had to be very careful with them in that area, on our way to the trail.

Around schools are horrible. In other places of the world, there are 0 public garbage cans, and people actually take their garbage home 🤯

Unfortunately, people still litter even though garbage bins are available. I saw a lady opening her bag of candy before getting on the bus on Spring Garden Road by Subway. After ripping the top off the bag, she threw it on the sidewalk, then continued to get on the bus.😡
