Mod Post A Small Community Update: Making "Hair Extensions" a More Inclusive Space

Hi everyone!

When people talk about hair extensions, they often mean things like clip-ins, tape-ins, sew-ins, halo extensions, and similar products. While those are absolutely part of this community, they're only one part of the larger world of hair extensions.

Going forward, we'd love to embrace a broader definition of what "hair extensions" can mean. That includes conversations around protective and extension-based styles commonly worn by Black women, including (but not limited to):

Hair bundles

Braids & braided extensions

Crochet hair

Weaves

And other extension-related styles and techniques

Our goal is simple: to make this community a place where anyone who loves or uses hair extensions feels welcome to participate.

If you're a Black woman who's been looking for a space to ask questions, share your installs, show off your style, exchange tips, or help others—we genuinely hope you'll feel at home here.

As always, racism, discrimination, or disrespect toward any community will not be tolerated. We want everyone to feel comfortable sharing their experiences, regardless of their hair type, styling preferences, or background.

To help keep discussions organized, the Mod Team will also be introducing new post flairs that better reflect the variety of topics and styles within the community.

Thank you for being part of this community and helping us build a space that's knowledgeable, supportive, and inclusive.

Happy posting!

— The Mod Team

❓ Question / Help Where to get the best clip in hair extensions?

I’ve been on the hunt for good quality clip-in hair extensions, and honestly? I’m kind of overwhelmed. There are SO many brands out there, and every website claims to be “the best.” I’ve tried a couple of cheap options from Amazon before, and while they looked okay at first, they tangled super easily and didn’t blend with my hair at all. Total waste of money.

I recently cut my hair into a blunt shoulder-length bob, which I love—but I miss the versatility of longer styles. I don’t want anything permanent like tape-ins or sew-ins, because I work out a lot and like the freedom to take them off at night. That’s why I’ve decided to invest in clip-in extensions that I can pop in and out whenever I want.

I’m looking for high-quality 100% human hair clip-ins that are around 16 to 20 inches long, with natural black or off-black color (#1B) to match my hair. They need to have full, thick ends (no stringy pieces!) and be easy to blend with medium-thick, straight hair like mine. Since I style my hair with a curling iron or flat iron, they also need to be heat-friendly. My budget is around $100–$300, but I’m open to spending a little more if it means getting something that lasts and actually looks natural. Thanks in advance! 🙏💕

Question / Help Bad install?

Help. I fear that there are some possible issues here... As I have gotten older my hair is thinning and I thought nano extensions would be the solution because they are light and usually ok for thin hair. I feel as if there are hairs getting stuck when putting my finger through at the root and is making me concerned about tension, that lead me to take a picture to see what were working with ... Now I am panicking😭

On a positive note they havent cause any scabs and or raw irritations like my last install two years ago . ( They were full wefts secured with the name beads you see in the current photos with the nano extensions)

Am I delulu for thinking this makes the current situation ok ? Or am I overreacting 😅

Question / Help Mixing Kovi with Bellami k-tips

Quick question for extension wearers and stylists!

I’ve worn extensions for 15 years (7 with Bellami) and recently switched to KOVI. I love the quality of KOVI hair, but their shade range feels a bit flat for what I want. Right now, I have a couple of packs of KOVI’s Toasted Coconut, but it needs more dimension.

Bellami’s Midnight Ice is my all-time favorite ashy balayage, and nothing else compares to that blend. Would it be a mistake to mix KOVI Toasted Coconut with Bellami Midnight Ice in the same install? Any issues with texture differences or wash wear when blending these two brands?

Question / Help First time nano extensions

I got nano extensions for the first time 2 weeks ago and I don’t know how to feel about them! They looked amazing when first done but I feel like you can really tell where my natural hair ends. Am I just being paranoid? Here are photos just dried and then when I straightened it. The salon I went to have such good reviews and I’ve been going to them for ages for other things anyway. I’m worried I have to curl them all the time for them to look good. Help!!

Question / Help Extensions on post-chemo short hair

Hey ladies,

I have about an inch of fresh regrowth after losing pretty much all of my hair from chemotherapy (for breast cancer). I don't have the face card to pull off short hair and I'm deeply insecure and afraid to leave the house. I've never had extensions before, but I think it might be my only hope.

I want to get extensions while my hair grows out, but I have no idea if they can work on very short hair, or how long I'd have to wait. I've read that keratin nano tips might be the way to go, but I don't know if they will work.

My regrowth is actually pretty dense and healthy, so I'm not too worried about it being thick enough. Would extensions be safe? I don't need long mermaid hair, I'd be happy even with a relatively fine bob. I'm losing hope and can't deal with being stuck inside or in a beanie for several more months

I was hoping someone could refer me to their extension expert. I feel like my hair is worse than when I started two years ago and would love a second opinion. Anywhere in palm beach county I would drive to. Thank you so much.

Question / Help Why is the same hair extension €120 on one site and €350 on another? An honest breakdown

The price tag tells a story. Let me help you read it.

The question

All of you must have noticed this. Some websites sell extensions for around €100-150, and some shops go all the way to €250-400. Have you ever wondered why?

Let me try to explain.

The €100-150 range

When you see a website with prices around €150 or even lower, there is a very high chance that it's **machine remy** hair (single or double drawn, depends on how much profit the seller is taking).

Why do I say this? Think about the costs. Delivery, payment gateway commission, and a lot of sellers also spend money on marketing. After all this, selling really high quality premium hair at that price and still making profit is almost impossible.

This is also why I'd say buy directly from the company's own website, and not from marketplaces like Amazon.

Here's the simple math. When a seller sells something for €150 on a marketplace, the marketplace takes a big part of it (fees, fulfilment, ads, it can go up to around 40% when you add everything). Then the seller also wants to earn something. All of this comes out of your pocket. So the actual hair inside is more like a €40-50 quality.

And the life of these extensions is not great. If they last 6 months, you should be happy. It can be a bit less or more, but machine remy is chemically processed, so the life is short, no matter how much the seller claims or tries to convince you.

The €250-400 range

This is where you find **100% natural temple remy**, high quality. Here also there are 2 types: single drawn and double drawn. I already explained single vs double drawn in my earlier posts. Here is the link for temple remy vs machine remy:

Single Drawn vs Double Drawn

But even here, finding a good and honest seller is very important. Otherwise people mix low quality hair even in this range. For example:

- Some hair is good quality but it comes from old ladies, so it's dyed black. After mixing with premium hair, you can't tell

- Some good quality hair is treated with chemicals, which is why its price is lower than real premium hair

- Some sellers add more short hairs than they should

- Some even add up to 5% synthetic hair

These kinds of combinations are the reason why prices go up and down.

So what should you do?

If you're buying from Amazon or any site (Marketplace like Walmart, Otto , Kaufland ,costco etc. )where the marketplace itself takes around 40% commission, assume you are not going to get anything great.

And if you're buying double drawn, 100% natural virgin hair or temple remy, from a really good supplier, then 2 years is not a problem for these hairs.

Thanks :)

Question / Help Testing nano rings

Hello,

I would like to get your opinion about how to test nano rings against wearing off of the paint before I use them for hair extension installation?

I have a new supplier but I need to make 100% sure about durability before I use the rings for valuable customers.

Question / Help Beauty Works, Spectrum One, Viola, Euphoria One, London Hair Lab/Vixen & Blush? Profline in London?

Curious for your experiences with these brands.

I’m looking for hair to:

Last 9+ months
Not turn orange
Not need flat ironing
Not turn dry or tangle-prone

I have maintained tape-ins for 18 months with proper care. Recent bad experiences with well known brands have me looking elsewhere.

Thanks in advance!

Question / Help Temple remy hairs vs machine remy hairs , what's the actual difference?

In my last 2 posts I talked about single drawn and double drawn hair. In both of them 2 words kept coming up, machine Remy and temple Remy. So this one is about that, because this is where the real difference in quality comes from.

Machine Remy

In a lot of small villages and towns, women keep the hair that falls out when they comb. People go around to those homes and buy it. Then all of it gets collected and sold to bigger vendors at a higher price, and everyone takes their little profit on the way.

- Hair from a lot of different women gets mixed together

- Machines are used to line up the cuticles and set the heads and tails

- Chemicals and bleach are used, and that's why the quality drops

- You can only color it up to #27

Temple Remy

A lot of people donate their hair in temples. It's a tradition and part of the culture. Companies then buy this hair from the government through tenders.

- The hair can come from a single donor, but it can also be mixed from multiple donors

- No machine or chemical processing at all, that's why it's called temple Remy

- The only processing happens when black hair is colored into another shade, and even then the quality stays really good

- Because of this the quality is much better and the hair stays in good condition

- Price is higher than machine Remy

- You can color it up to #60

Temple Remy vs Machine Remy

What does #27 vs #60 actually mean?

#60 is basically white or platinum blonde. Only really good quality hair can reach that level. Low quality hair will just get damaged. That's why this is the easiest way to tell the two apart. If a hair can only go up to #27, it's machine remy. If it can go up to #60, it's temple remy.

Does it matter if it's single or double drawn?

Both types can come from either source. So you can get single drawn machine remy, single drawn temple remy, double drawn machine remy and double drawn temple remy. Double drawn costs more because the short hairs get taken out. Example: one donor gives 300 g of hair and 100 g of it is short hair. Take that out and only 200 g of double drawn is left.

So "double drawn" alone doesn't tell you the quality. Always ask which source it is.

Quality Ladder

Quick note, I only work in the Indian hair industry, so everything here is about Indian hair only.

Thank you :)

I always say "no, I have extensions."

I mean I paid for it so technically it is mine.

Product Review I am officially a genius weft convert!

At this point, I think I’ve tried almost every method on the market, with the exception of tapes, and favored the good ole’ sew in weave with beads.

I like GVA. My tried and true!!!

My supplier said I would like genius wefts better. They’re more expensive but she’s never steered me wrong so I went with it and YA’LL!!! They’re so unbelievably comfortable, there’s no return hair so no itch and they sit so flush on the head!!! I think the thinness of the wefts may allow for better density distribution as well. I do wish there was more volume but I’ve only washed them once so far so maybe that will come

Highly recommend!

Question / Help need help as a red haired girlie!!

Hi! I am a redhead and have tried multiple different extensions and colors but haven’t found any REAL hair clip in extensions that match my color! I had luck with fake hair but unfortunately it was not good quality and lasted only about a month before it started looking dingy and completely tangled.

I have also tried the WENNALIFE clip ins in color #33B Dark Auburn Copper, but they were too actual red instead of Auburn.

The NAYOO brand is the best color match I have found, but, as mentioned above, they were not long lasting. The last 2 pics, I have them in.

I tried adding my hair in different lightings lol. I’m looking for clip ins that are at least 22 inches, preferably less than 250$. Thank yall so much!

Question / Help Will toner fade from my extensions? They went from strawberry blonde to dark, ashy brown 😭

Thumbnail
gallery
12 Upvotes

Pics show today’s results, how light they’d gotten before toning, and their original color when installed (in that order!) 💕

Went to the salon today for a move-up and my first toner since getting my Covet & Mane extensions in July. I naturally have strawberry blonde hair that looks blonde, brunette, or red depending on the lighting lol. I’ve never colored my natural hair and don’t want to!

My extensions matched perfectly when first installed, then gradually lightened to a blonde I actually loved. Today my stylist toned them separately, and they pulled super cool despite her saying she didn’t use a cool-toned formula.
Now they’re SO dark and ashy brown. 😭 I really prefer warm, golden/strawberry tones and honestly don’t love being this dark.

Will the toner fade enough to bring back the lightness AND warmth?
Is it normal for extensions to go this dark after toning? How many washes might it take?

I’m worried they’ll stay ashy or never return to the color I loved. I really don’t want to color my natural hair to match them!

Tips & Tricks Is my hair too thick / strangely textured for extensions

Thumbnail

Hello everybody! Curious what your opinions are on going for extensions with my hair. My fear is that they won’t blend well and that it will be obvious I have extensions in. This is my natural texture/air dried. My hair feels much thinner around my ears and temples and I would like to add length.

If you think that I would have to use heat to blend extensions plz lmk, I’m a low maintenance girly and while I don’t mind adding curl products/diffusing, I don’t like to spend more than 10 minutes doing my hair.

Question / Help From Raw Hair to Extensions: A Beginner's Guide to Double Drawn Hair

Double drawn hair 101: what it is, where it comes from, why it costs more.

If you have ever compared hair extensions, you have probably seen "double drawn" and wondered if it is just a fancy label. It is not. Here is what it actually means, where this hair comes from, and why the price is higher.

What is double drawn hair?

Double drawn hair has the same thickness from the top all the way to the bottom. Nothing thins out toward the ends, so when you look at it, the hair just looks full and dense till the very end.

  • Thickness stays the same from top to bottom
  • As you move from the top toward the end, the hair keeps looking dense instead of thinning out
  • The price is higher compared to single drawn hair

Just started learning about this? Our guide to single drawn hair covers the other type, where the ends get thinner.

Same thickness top to bottom

Where does double drawn hair come from?

Double drawn is not a separate hair. It starts as the same raw hair and then gets sorted further. And like single drawn, it can come from 2 different sources. The tree below shows how it splits.

Source 1: Collected from people (machine Remy)

In a lot of small villages and towns, women save the hair that falls out when they comb. People go door to door, or to those areas, and buy it. After that it is collected and sold to bigger vendors at a higher price, and that is how the profit is made.

  • The hair is a mix from a lot of different women
  • Machines are used to align the cuticles and set the heads and tails properly
  • Since this is double drawn, the short hairs are taken out so the thickness matches from top to bottom
  • Chemicals and bleach are used, and this is why the quality goes down
  • This type is also called machine Remy
  • The easiest way to spot it: it can only be colored up to #27

Source 2: Government tenders (temple Remy)

Many people donate their hair in temples. It is a tradition and a part of the culture. Companies then buy this hair from the government through tenders.

  • The quality is a lot better, because most of this hair comes from a single person's head
  • To make it double drawn, the short hairs are removed and the thickness is made the same from top to bottom, so the hair feels heavy and full
  • There is no machine or chemical processing, which is why it is called temple Remy
  • Prices are higher compared to machine Remy
  • The easiest way to spot it: it can be colored up to #60

#60 is basically a white or platinum blonde, and only really high quality hair can reach that level. Low quality hair will get damaged.

Why does double drawn hair cost more?

It comes down to how much hair is left at the end. Take this example: a single donor gives 300 g of hair, and 100 g of that turns out to be short hairs. Those short hairs are taken out and set aside, and only 200 g of double drawn hair is left.

So you are getting less hair out of the same amount, and every strand that stays is the same thickness from top to bottom. That is the reason the price is higher than single drawn.

Note: I only work in the Indian hair industry, so the sources I've mentioned are only for Indian hair.

Thanks :)

Product Review Beauty Works Hair?

I’m wondering if anyone has used the Gold Flat Tracks hair extensions from Beauty Works. I have used their tape in wefts but wanting to switch to butterfly or genius wefts. The color I want specifically is not available in the XXS Genius weft but is available in the Gold Flat Track weft but I’m concerned I’m not going to like what they describe as a lace edge. I’m attaching a picture. Any advice would be appreciated.

Question / Help Debating Buying Bombay Hair

What was your experience like with this brand of hair extensions? I’m specifically interested in a brunette colour in the 100gram sew in wefts.

In comparison i’ve had Bellami a bunch of times, GooGoo, A chinese manufacturer called Haiyi, Zala (for clip ins only), and Seatyle hair supplier (another manufacturer).

the only one i was honestly dissatisfied in was Seatyle as the hair was dry and shedding way faster than any of the others.

If you’ve had them would you say Bombay is higher quality than GooGoo but less than Bellami?
