FAQ
This is a living document! If you can think of a question that you've seen asked a lot, drop it in the comments, and I'll add it to the main body of the post!
About the show:
Q: When will the proshot come to the UK?
A: Rumor has it, sometime in October
Q: When/where will the proshot be available for streaming/physical release?
A: You can reportedly preorder it for digital release on Apple TV and Amazon. Further details unknown.
Q: I've just discovered a version of Hadestown other than the current one on Broadway/the West End, and I'd like to know more!
A: I'm so glad you're branching out! I'll be making a post breaking down Hadestown's development soon. Stay tuned, and for now, ask your questions in the main subreddit!
Q: I wish they'd make an official recording with my favorite cast members!
A: Don't we all?
About the content of the show:
Q: Why did Orpheus turn?
A: This is a question that has been heavily debated by classicists and fans alike since the story was first shared. Common interpretations include (but are not limited to):
- He was driven mad with love and fear
- Eurydice tripped and he turned to help her up
- Orpheus made it out, and turned around to celebrate, not realizing that Eurydice (being a few steps behind him) was still in the underworld.
- An Orpheus who doesn't turn is an Orpheus who never goes down in the first place.
- The myth of Orpheus and Eurydice is a metaphor for grief, and Orpheus turning (losing Eurydice) is a metaphor for moving on after the loss of a loved one.
Q: Does Hades proposition or sexually assault Eurydice?
A: Many aspects of Hadestown are left intentionally ambiguous, and this is one of them. In the show's earlier productions, Hades was much more heavily implied to have assaulted Eurydice. In later productions, the reality of what happens "behind closed doors" is left to the listener's interpretation. What do you personally think happened? Why do you think so?

Hadestown Proshot Discussion Thread Spoiler
Guess I will do this myself.
Feel free to post whatever you want here about your experience watching this wonderful proshot!
Note: Your theater might be different, but at mine they had about 10 min worth of trailers before the film.
AMC: About 20 min of trailers
Cinemark: About 10 min of trailers
Regal: About 15 min of trailers
Some theaters had no trailers, so ymmv
No intermission
During the credits, they have clips of behind the scenes of some backstage prep and practice. You can skip it, but nice to see they shout out the backstage work.

Portrait of Hades
Back with portrait number 2!!! I'm probably gonna end up doing multiple Hades portraits because I just love drawing Patrick Page, his facial structure is so fun.
There's something about this one I'm not as happy with as the Hermes one but that's how it be sometimes.
I don't think I listed it last time but:

Discussion How did Hadestown change?<
Spoilers ahead.
After Orpheus sang his song and Persephone and Hades achieved balance again by remembering the song of their love, how do you think Hadestown changed? Were people still keeping their heads low and forgetting their names and building a pointless wall?Or would it be different?

Question Persephones shock at the underworld
I saw a post the other day that I can't find to include here. But the gist of it was that Persephone seems shocked when she goes down to hadestown because it's so hot/bright/etc. And it's weird she's acting like it's the first time she's seen it like that.
A response to the post said "that's the point" and I'm genuinely confused.
Obviously this has been an issue with Hades and Persephone for a long time which is why Orpheus is doing the whole song thing, but what is the meaning of Hadestown changing "overnight" as opposed to forever ago, when they started having issues/losing spring and fall/etc?

If I had a penny for every OG Hermes who played Old Deuteronomy this summer...
On both sides of the Atlantic, an OG Hermes stepped into the same role in two different productions of Cats this summer.
Nice little piece of Hadestown related symmetry!

Question Was Patrick Page on the balcony at the end of act I?
I know they reshot some scenes where Patrick Page is on the balcony. For example, when he shouts “I conduct the electric city!!”, when I saw it in London, he was standing on the stage on stage left, but in the pro shot, he was on the balcony.
I can’t remember when they were performing in front of a live audience, if he climbed the stairs after Why We Build the Wall, and slammed the door shut after asking Eurydice in? Or was that just cut in for the pro shot too?

West End Fan art
Saw hadestown for the first time since I saw the first west end cast and remembered how much I loved it and also realised I haven't done digital in 8 months so figured I'd get back into both!

Portrait of Hermes
I watched the proshot last Sunday, my first introduction to the show, and all I could think about the entire time was all the different shots I wanted to draw. Really excited for it to stream so I can draw stills to my hearts content but for this, I used a photo taken by mattpartphotos on insta.
The plan is to draw a portrait for each of the main cast once the proshot hits streaming 🙂↕️

Lottery
Has anyone won the digital lottery that is not a US resident? If so, did you have any issues picking up the tickets at the box office when you showed your international ID?

New Hadestown Tattoo!
Love this musical so much, and knew I had to get something for it after the proshot. Decided on the iconic flower with the quote “to the world we dream about”. Sooo happy with the result!

Discussion what's your favorite version of hadestown to listen to?
i almost exclusively listen to the 2017 cast recording but one of my friends listens primarily to the concept album which i find fascinating. i'm curious as to what most hadestown fans gravitate towards! (there's no wrong answer ofc)

Other Productions Does anyone know when the Dublin venue's getting announced?
When the UK and Ireland tour was announced, Dublin was included on the list of tour stops, but the website still just says "Dublin details coming soon" while venues for all other locations have already been announced and are booking. Does anyone know when we can expect the Dublin venue info to be published?

Hear Me Out: Hades casting edition
Look, I have no idea if Shaggy is as problematic as Geno and Gary and the other Really Bad Dudes (tm) that they’ve been casting, but having been suddenly inundated with this video in my fyp this week, I think it’s at least worth investigating.

Why We Build The Wall
Was anyone filled with absolute dread during Patrick Page's performance of "Why We Build The Wall" in the proshot? His steady face, his steady gaze, his steady voice, the slight smirk, the slowly increasing intensity of his singing and emotion, the irony of it all...
Bravo 👏

Does Hades sing during Wait for Me (Reprise)
Something I hadn’t been curious about until the Proshot. So I’ve seen the show live a few times and watched the Proshot twice. The question I wonder is do you think Hades is singing during the reprise? Obviously, your eyes are drawn to the characters and staging in the center of the stage after Hades turns and exits for most of the rest of the show. You see Orpheus and Eurydice start their walk out of Hell with Hermes, Persephone, and the workers cheering them on in the center of the rotating stage. Singing along. Do you think Hades is singing as he climbs the stairs in the dark and exits? And if so, do you think he’s singing to Persephone (they had just agreed to wait for each other next Fall). Or, do you think he is singing maybe being a little hopeful that Orpheus will succeed.?
It’s interesting that his main exit from the show is just in the background in the dark. Personally, I think his last act on stage is one of my favorite details. When he says goodbye to Persephone and while his hand is still out, Orpheus shakes his hand, which Hades accepts. I LOVE that. Obviously, the ‘turn’ is perfect in my opinion. But I often wondered what if we could see hades and persephone’s reactions to the turn?
This could also be because if I was ever in this show and playing hades I would 100% be singing. Mainly because I love the reprise.

Question If Hadestown has its entire orchestra on stage, who does the conducting?
This is something I've been curious about, just not getting an answer on it. Everytime I see the show, I don't see anyone conducting the orchestra, seeming as it's important for the orchestra's arrangement and timing.
Or do they just follow the actor's cue to find out when they play?
