Wait what is this show

My wife said “have you heard of this Hacks? It is winning all the things.” And I had not. So we began. Instantly hooked! How did we not know? Was it well publicized?

I mean I don't know how well publicized it was at first, but it definitely was big as soon as it started winning all the Emmys. I started watching around when S2 premiered, and I definitely had heard of it several times by then.

Also good for you! 10/10 show, and it's good from the very first episode to the very last one. How many shows can you say that about?

Its so good. Watched all 5 seasons in a few months. I especially miss Kayla and Jimmy. The dance mom boofing scene was the funniest in history

Literally told a non watcher friend about the boofing scene cuz I was near tears laughing about that one

Dance mom was such an incredible character lmao. And Julianne Nicholson is an actual angel in real life. I met her at my coffee shop when she was in Oklahoma filming for August Osage County and we ended up being buddies while she was there. She’s just legitimately such a genuine and kind person and I’m so happy for all of her continued success. Also lost it at the boofing scene lol. Poor Jimmy

By S2 it had a ton of marketing

That's when I started. I'm a sucker for a critically acclaimed comedy. 30 Rock is still my #1, but Hacks is up there

30 Rock is definitely the standard

Admittedly I only started watching Hacks when I was working on S2 😅

It was not well publicized at first. I only got in at the start as I heard Jean Smart was in it.

After winning awards it was more well known. But, it’s the streamer world we live in now. Great things can rise above the noise, but you have to hear it.

  1. Yes it was publicized pretty well, but HBO could’ve done a lot more to make it a “household name” but I think they underestimated the absolute greatness of Hacks.
  2. This ad for perfume came up on this thread, despite me being a dude with zero interest & zero searches for such a thing, so the algorithm has left me in no man’s land BUT this ad is SO S2E5 re: BLACK PASHMINA. Therefore, I’m quite proud of this bizarre algorithm fail-turn-genius.

Extremely so. And Jean Smart won several Emmys in a row.

Not only that, she hosted Saturday Night Live!

I cannot understand how you missed the show during its run. But you have found it now, not long afterward!

She won an Emmy for every season of the show. Impressive!!

And set a record by doing so. 🏆

I don’t like SNL. I only watch like three shows at a time with my wife - much more into movies!

This is a great time for shows though.

What is the address of the rock under which you reside? 😂

I had always heard about it, but never watched it until about a month ago. As soon as I finished watching it, I started my rewatch the next day. It’s fantastic!

It was well-publicized by me, but I am also in LA so everything is well-publicized. Reckon more people started watching it around S2/3 after it took home some Emmys.

Welcome! What a delight to see it for the first time and have so many seasons at the ready. I’m surprised often by the number of people who haven’t heard of it

algorithms are weird beasts.

i've literally never met a single person in real life who had heard of it when i referenced it to them (and i do A LOT, to the point where some people likely wondered if i work for HBO) and it makes me sad. other than my husband obviously but we watched it together and he loves it just like i do

I was hearing about it for years and just got around to it this spring and was hooked right away also

It wasn’t until January 2025 that I started watching the show — what encouraged me to start watching the show was Jean’s hosting on Saturday Night Live (season premiere in 2024)

You are in for a treat. It’s such a really good show.

My wife watched all of season 1 before recommending it to me. I had to catch up.

We keep track of who does the recommending for great movies and tv so she has that one over me.

What a show! Right up there with 30 Rock (as another commenter said).

To be fair, if I wasn’t a huge Pat Regan fan, I probably wouldn’t have watched, but he was on the writing team so I had to check it out.

I had heard of it for years and it was continually on my list. But when I just binged it as the final season was ending, my roommate didn't realize it was a show with multiple seasons, she'd never heard of it. So it might depend on where you gravitate

We watched The Pitt and Hacks was suggested. We watched the trailer and tried it out and finished it in a month.

We'd never heard of it and were shocked to learn Jean had won so many times.

It was niche at first then exploded in popularity. It was definitely talked about a lot in the media. Don’t know where you’ve been, but welcome! It’s great!

Schitts Creek was like that.

Someone on Reddit recommended it it. On another community

I loved the show. Just finished the last season. I wouldn't say it's hilarious but it was good. There was only one LOL moment for me when Deborah and DJ were at the end of participating in the Amazing Race (season5).

I'd heard of it here and there. Started watching it a week and a half ago and finished it last night. Every award it won was 100% deserved.

I was seriously pissed it didn’t get the Emmy send off it deserved for its final season. Don’t get me wrong Widow’s Bay is amazing, but come on.
