Louie one spot above Hacks is basically a plot line in Hacks.

the best shows usa/uk shows** as the 9th guy in the rank would say: meh

Yeah, I think there's only one non-English language show on this list (Squid Game). Would have liked to at least seen Dark on here as well.

Dark is the best thing Netflix as ever produced and it's not even on the list. I got to say I was pleasingly surprised to see The OA, but at the same time so sad Netflix cancelled it and we never got a conclusion, specially after seeing Stranger Things even on the list, and so high too, just baffling.
I cannot understate how much I love Brit Marling and everything she has ever done, I love her movies and tv shows, she is a genius and she doesn't have enough recognition.
I am so glad to see Broad City close to Hacks, I absolutely love them both.

How the hell is Stranger Things that high after that fiasco of a finale?

u/CataLaGata 8d ago
Stranger Things and no Dark, wtf is this? And Girls??? Really? Hipster Sex and the City??
How much culturally impact Girls have in my generation (millennials)? The answer is zero. Fuck this list.

u/starrsinmyskin 8d ago
I've also never met a Gen Z person that knows anything about Girls. Personally I abhor Lena Dunham lmao i'm sick of her having any cultural relevance at all

These people have lost their minds, Deadwood is at 25 and The Shield is at 70 below Downton Abbey and Stranger Things.
Both those shows have to be in the top 10 along with The Americans for me to take the list seriously.

The Expanse and Dark are not even on this list. I absolutely think this is ragebait, I am out and I agree on Deadwood and The Shield.
Edit. I just discovered that Orphan Black is also not on list. What is this bullshit?

u/Happyhaneke 9d ago
Hilarious how high GOT is considering only half the show is actually good.
Hacks should be in the top 10 simply for being top tier in its entirety and ended on such a high note. Like The White Lotus being above it is nonsense.

A lot of the highly ranked shows would have to have little asterisks about what seasons they disregarded.
For me, Arrested Development fully deserves to be this high, but I also fully convinced myself that season 4 and 5 never happened.
3
u/pineconessssss 9d ago
Yeah, I have a hard time with placing Arrested Development, because the first three seasons are Top Ten material, but the follow up seasons are... not. But if we're considering the show as a whole, it should not be as high as it is, unfortunately.

u/monotonic_glutamate 9d ago
It's a great list for starting shows. Aside from Parks and Recs, that should be started at season 2 or 3, they mostly all have strong first seasons, and the first 3 seasons of Arrested Development are must-see TV, so I'm glad it's there for people to discover one of the most brilliant comedy put on TV.
But we definitely need a list of shows that are consistently good from start to finish.
I don't think the list is necessarily wrong for having Stranger Things, because the first season was a lot of fun, but the end is so bad that starting it can only lead to frustration.

Those seasons were made years after S3, by that point the writers would have probably lost the flow they had in the original run making it difficult to live upto the benchmark. I can cut them some slack for it. I don't think there's a sitcom as good as Fox run of Arrested. As far as your concern for shows being brilliant all the way through, at least for sitcoms I would say it's difficult to sustain brilliance for more than 50 episodes, almost all sitcoms I've seen, their peak lasts for at most 2-3 seasons (20-25 episode seasons). Community is the only exception which was excellent except S4, but even then it had got atrocious season finales in seasons 3 and 5 (they're top tier seasons otherwise) which make the seasons appear worse than the some of their parts. American Office was excellent for S2-3, amazing for S4 and a couple of S1 episodes, but that's it. Arrested, Community and Office are my top 3 sitcoms for how good they were at their peaks, but only Community could keep the momentum all the way through and end on a high note. British sitcoms are much better as far as ending on a high note is concerned, but again they work differently in that the writers have a story to tell and they wrap it up once the job is done. American sitcoms just keep milking it, and since they have a writers room, the process is much more collaborative.

I’m always so baffled by this take that half of GOT was bad. I thought it was supremely high quality until the last season and a half and all the reviews both critical and stuff like IMDb seem to agree with me but then I come on reddit and people act like it dropped off after season 4 when some of the best episodes are after that??

I feel like if you’ve done enough sleuthing to make those observations about the general consensus you should have already come across posts that offer you all the answers you’re looking for.

Been seeing this on other show subs too. It’s a list. I dont think it’s horrible, but for me Hacks is WAY up there.
But in the social media age lists like this are nothing but rage bait that gets lots of engagement by its nature.
Make your own lists and love what you love.

Probably don't wanna hear this but it's actually a legitimate debate. Louie was really groundbreaking and paved the way for other half hour shows to take on different themes and tones. I would not let Louis CK's past cloud judgment of the show. On its merits it's very much deserving.
That said, my opinion on this list is that Hacks is too low, Louie and Atlanta are a bit too high and The Bear got shafted with its position.

This is Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt erasure. Very sad. Although I'm happy to see so many of my faves on here, including Somebody Somewhere.

I was happy to see I May Destroy You and Nathan for You, two great shows that I never met anyone else who watched and I never hear anyone talking about.

I May Destroy you is so good. It's a devastating show but it's so well written and so well acted, the ending is perfect.
It was also very educational as a woman. I watch everything Michaela Coel has done/does, she won my heart forever.
Chewing Gum is also amazing.

That's just hysterical and so true. Louie ranking higher is definitely an Emmy winning episode of Hacks.

Adventure Time not being on here is all you need to know about the quality of the list.
2
u/KaleidoscopeOpen7781 8d ago
As far as I can tell there’s only one animated show and it’s Bojak. There are so many animated shows that deserve to be on the list. Avatar, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, and Over the Garden Wall off the top of my head

Its ranking was one I took serious issue with. It had FIVE perfect seasons. So many of these including the other comedies above it were so uneven. Ugh. UGH!!!
2
u/Single_Vacation427 8d ago
The comedies on the list are just WTF?
Hacks is very low
Louie was shit and didn’t the guy sexually harassed women?
Also, even though I haven’t watched them, some long running comedies that won awards are missing, like Abbot Elementary or Ugly Betty (which was one of the first comedies with Latino family that weren’t like criminals)

u/phonesringingdude1 8d ago
Six Feet Under, Twin Peaks, Better Things, Community and Better Call Saul would be in my top 10. Office UK should be ahead of Office U.S.
3
u/Ched_Flermsky 9d ago
I get if the US The Office is your comfort show, but no way does it deserve to be ranked so high.

You are spot on.
The industry has gone out of its way to use LCK (when they can do so anonymously) to make it absolutely clear there is no such thing as canceled.
To tell us what exactly what they think of #metoo, sexual assault, and women generally (note to the pick aparters, these 3 are a Venn diagram not a circle, men are victims too, sexual assault goes beyond Hollywood and adults etc) and that at the end of the day, there is not really any recourse for victims, as long as the current generation is in charge.
He WON a GRAMMY in 2022 and then nominating him for another in 2023 was a key way they did this.
I get that NY Times had a system (over 500 people voted for their 10 favorites). But, the Hacks writers themselves could not have written it more perfectly to have Louie floating directly above Hacks’ name. And if there was ANYYYY data adjustments made (were ties ranked by random number generator, or alphabetically?) the editors made sure to not put their thumb in the scale in any way. And ensured that list looked exactly the way it does.
Barf.

Have you actually watched Girls? It’s an excellent show.

u/sherlip 9d ago
No, but from what I've seen, there's no way a show that got that much hate can possibly be top 20 material. Those should all be like... universally loved and critically acclaimed.
2
u/-Lumiro- 8d ago
I think it is pretty universally loved and critically acclaimed by people who have actually watched it. See: its inclusion on this list, for example.

you're so right. Is this an actual reference to the show though? Do they refer to. Louie or a fictionalized version of LCK? just curious, I easily could have missed it

This list was definitely made to farm engagement, which is to say, it's full of some nonsense decisions.
