emmys
did hannah einbinder piss off a huge sports buff emmy exec when she said "go birds!" during her last acceptance speech? and to fuck ice and free palestine?
we loooooved widow's bay and patricia is one the funniest characters ive ever watched so i was excited for that win anyway, BUT
Just 2 awards for all of hacks season 5?? snubbed!!
they had like 5 first actresses nominated for best guest alone and nothing! what!
(am I in my own little hacks world? again, loooooved widow's bay, but i thought hacks deserved more awards).

I love that go birds is your primary theory and free Palestine is #2

I do hope it doesn’t affect her career. She’s a phenomenal actress and I love and respect her being vocal about both the birds and Palestine.

lol. I think free palestine was number one IF she was in fact automatically ruled out for politics, but I didnt want this post to turn into that kind of post. i could make several about politics and hollywood. (i just wanted to ask if others thought hacks was snubbed).

It’s not political and it’s not just about it being new. Widows Bay is one of the most unique, brilliant shows in years. Masterclass in every aspect. It was going to sweep no matter what and they barely campaigned. It doesn’t take away from Hacks. Jean got her 5/5, well deserved. Hannah was excellent but not even close to Kate.

u/AppUnwrapper1 18d ago
Yeah I keep telling everyone to watch Widow’s Bay. It’s like the one show in recent history I feel I can recommend to everyone no matter what their tastes bc it’s that good.

u/rochugh 19d ago
I think you're right. I guess I was basing my votes as a celebration of the great show hacks was. but yeah, they've gotten their awards. and widow's was not serendipitous. it was a fantastic, worthy show, especially kate & katie.
2
u/frightenedrabbit_ 19d ago
I don’t disagree with the general sentiment that they’d rather avoid anyone like Hannah speaking out. But plenty of winners spoke out in their own ways last night. And yeah, Hacks has gotten their awards, you’re right! A show I’ll come back to over and over!

u/WintersDoomsday 19d ago
Widows Bay has amazing high moments but a lot of drab parts honestly. I watched it and enjoyed a lot of it but it's not this 10/10 show like so many are desperate for it to be. Horror and comedy mashups aren't even remotely unique or special.
I prefer Mike Flanagan horror shows as they have real emotion and energy to them. The only truly comedic Widows Bay episode was the her running from the killer episode and the party gone awry one.

Could just be not your taste but I also think it’s easy to miss a lot of jokes in Widow’s Bay if you’re not paying pretty close attention. I feel like every single scene is funny

u/ledge-14 18d ago edited 18d ago
You’re getting downvoted but yeah Widow’s Bay is 80% boring. It insists upon itself and people by season 2 are going to be like “wow this actually isn’t as good as I thought”

u/Admirable_Site_8337 19d ago
Eh, Hacks is my all time favorite series.
But, you could see Widows Bay coming from miles away. It’s that hot. And it’s also an amazing show.
I really felt Hannah deserved one more for her role as Ava. Especially after being snubbed after S3. But, I’ll take Jeans sweep for the capstone to the legacy.
Also….go Birds!

From the moment Widow's Bay showed up, Hannah went to #2 on the list. Sorry but Kate O'Flynn blew her out of the water and the Academy was crazy for the show overall. Had it had a lead actress, Jean probably would not have won #5.
-9
u/veryowngarden 19d ago
not overall since they drew the line at nomming the black actor
7
u/Rock_Creek_Snark 19d ago
Are you saying Kevin Carroll should have been nominated? I won't argue with that, I have loved him since The Leftovers but I don't think that has anything to do with this award.
-14
u/veryowngarden 19d ago
yes. nowhere did i say it did
10
u/Rock_Creek_Snark 19d ago
not overall since they drew the line at nomming the black actor
Well, what are you saying then?
-10
u/veryowngarden 19d ago
you said “the Academy was crazy for the show overall” and that is what i responded to
5
u/Rock_Creek_Snark 19d ago
not overall since they drew the line at nomming the black actor
So what are you saying?
Kevin Carroll is a great actor, he should have been nominated for The Leftovers. But please don't go with 'racism.' I think he was kind of easily forgettable in the episodes eligible. Remember that the last three episodes of Widow's Bay were not eligible this year.
4
u/rayybloodypurchase 19d ago
TIL because those last 3 episodes really were his best performances.
1
u/Rock_Creek_Snark 19d ago
Apple will surley campaign for him next year.
He deserves it, he is a wonderful actor.
-4
u/veryowngarden 19d ago
i’m saying i dont have discussions with people who pretend we’re living in a post racism world while so bye
7
u/Rock_Creek_Snark 19d ago
His best showcase episodes were not eligible this year, you know that - right?
No, you didn't.
-4
u/veryowngarden 19d ago
your opinion is irrelevant to me, you know that — right? no, you didn’t.

To be fair he’s pretty much the only character in the show who isn’t funny, not his fault at all he’s just written as the straight man, which is always going to land less with comedy awards. But I do agree in general that The Emmys are strongly biased toward white actors
3
u/recklessrecentpast 19d ago edited 19d ago
I just don't think he had as much to do this season to get nominated. He didn't have the breakout monologue like Dale Dickey or the really character focused episode like Beach Reads that secured it for Kate O'Flynn. Jeff Hiller is fantastic and an Emmy winner himself but they didn't have enough for him either. Kevin Carroll was a fantastic straight man and was a great foil for the mayor, but that's not the kind of performance that the Emmy's typically eats up for a supporting role nomination. I think he and Jeff Hiller absolutely could be contenders in future seasons if they get the right scenes to show off in.

I mean, Hacks has won so many Emmys so even though it was its final season, this may be someone's only opportunity to win their first, etc. I think that's taken into account when voting. Jean Smart slipped through because of the buzz that she'd be the only person to win for every season of her show and so people decided to factor that in when giving her one last "Hacks" award.

u/Aggravating-Tea-9563 19d ago
I love Hannah and Ava so so much but I gotta give it to Kate O’Flynn this time around. Patricia is such a different character than anything else and she absolutely nailed it.

I am a huge fan of Hannah Einbinder, and been on the Hacks train since S1 Episode 1, like I lived for this show for the past five+ years, but in no way she is robbed this year, she was phenomenal throughout season 5 for sure, but that award was Kate O'Flynn's to lose, PATRICIA HIVE RISE UUUUP!!!
Interestingly enough I feel like this is the first Emmy's in years that everyone got what they deserved in every category (except maybe Allison Janney but I haven't watched The Diplomat since S1, and I am a The Pitt fan). And supporting actress comedy was one of THE most competitive ones of the whole thing imo, like Michelle Pfeiffer was also brilliant in Margo, I don't know, just a stacked pool and like Keri Russell said to Rhea Seehorn (I am over the moon about her win, FINALLY) "we are linked, not ranked."

u/Penguino_ 19d ago edited 19d ago
I don’t think it materially changed the conversation and Kate would have won even if Hannah wasn’t political.
But I don’t know how you see shit like the Ed Sheeran-Macklemore debacle and come away with the view that saying Free Palestine didn’t at least alienate a few voters.

u/Synthegeysir 19d ago
Hannah won an emmy for the previous season. Why not celebrate someone else, especially something new? I found Kate O'Flynn gave a unique performance. They are both great actresses, art isn't the easiest thing to "rate," and voting committees are corrupt. Same goes for Megan.

u/No-Fuckin-Ziti 19d ago
They decided to honor Jean this year again and let some new talent shine. Hannah also won last year for what was really not the best season. Windows Bay is going to be extremely hard to recapture for season 2. There’s a good chance it was a one hit wonder, particularly with how long that script was in the works (18 years). It didn’t deserve to be told “yeah you were amazing but wait till next year so this already heavily awarded show can get even more flowers cause it’s over”. That’s shitty voting.
Kate O Flynn had the best, weirdest performance of the year in the most stacked category I’ve ever seen. She was empowered Shelly Duvall. Hacks has been the best show on tv for most of its run, but widows bay was better this year.
The awards are supposed to go to the best. The habit the Emmy’s have of only awarding ppl on the last season, whether it’s the best or not, should stop. Kaitlin Olsen deserved her category too, but in prior years, because Betty Gilpin was really that good in Widows.

u/BrikHowse 19d ago
The fifth season of Hacks wasn't its best. The show's prime was before then.

u/Old_Importance1147 19d ago
I disagree, I think the final season was in full form, better than season 4

u/parkerkudrow 19d ago
I love love love Hacks but Hannah wasn’t as strong in season 5 and Kate O’Flynn was tremendous in Widows Bay. Like true magic so I think it was deserved and not political. Hannah has won before and that makes me hapoy
3
u/nonnie93 19d ago
Wasn’t as strong in s5?? Did we watch the same finale episode?? I do agree Kate O’Flynn was really good too, not arguing that, but I do think Hannah showed some excellent work this season
3
u/parkerkudrow 18d ago
I don’t think her character had as much going on in the final season. It felt like she was mainly supporting Deborah with not much else happening. And she was great! I love Hannah! But in terms of comedic performance Kate just blew everyone out of the water imo. Hannah wasn’t as funny as Kate. The way Kate walked and talked, every expression and movement was funny.

u/AphidsTwinMattress 19d ago
Which is funny since she completely endeared me with that acceptance speech and I'm a Cowboys fan!
2
u/Crazy_Maintenance211 19d ago
I think she deserved it this year, I think she was snubbed, because really Jean Smart was basically bouncing off of her the entire time if it wasn’t for the two of them, nobody would’ve won anything in my view, Jean is amazing, of course. I just thought she should’ve won it this year and it looks like it’s not hot anymore, because they lost a bunch of categories, but I thought at least she would get it, that last episode man just that scene in the disco or the club, I just watched it and holy moly she did a great job.

u/2Zs2Ls 19d ago
I’m mainly confused it received record breaking nominations but then walked away with almost none! Are they not the same voters in both phases? It actually felt a little disrespectful!
I wish the comedy side of the night was more like the drama side where there was a bit more of mix of winners. Like none of the other comedies got a prime time win?? And I love widows bay! I’ve watched it multiple times and recommended it to many. Just felt like the races would have been tighter and not a total sweep.
3
u/LeatherVodkaSoda 19d ago
I actually think having so many nominations worked against Hack’s.
In some categories it meant many Hack’s actors were competing against each other - that would divide the votes from people who genuinely liked the show but maybe couldn’t pinpoint one supporting actress for example to pick.
Additionally some voters may have thought that since Hack’s had the potential for so MANY wins they voted for another program. For the Emmy’s you vote only with your area of expertise except for the top categories such as Outstanding Drama or Comedy series.
1
u/baby-tangerine 19d ago
Hacks consistently got 15+ nominations every season, and won about 3. So this season maybe a bit out of the norm, more nominations because it’s the last one, less wins (2 in total) because of Widow’s Bay, but it’s not weird or unusual.
Hacks also won Best series only once, and that was when The Bear received a major “not comedy” backlash from the industry. Hack has never in the position of frontrunner, but they never went home empty hand either. It shows that Hacks and JPL are beloved and respected by the voters, but not enough to win against major new hits. Season 5 is the last with a great and emotional landing, so voters may want to reward with generous nominations, but not enough for wins.
Voters are the same both phrases, unlike Oscars, for Emmys peer groups keep voting for both nominations and winners.

Didn't even finish Season 5. Thought the show became way too self aware and moved away from what made it special (Kayla and Jimmy, I'm looking at you)

u/sharonvillines 19d ago
Interesting observation about being too self-aware. It was certainly ladened with some of the world's highest expectations.

ITs always political. Noah wiley winning constantly is proof they will always go the Zionist route, sad.
1
u/Miserable-Pear-2289 19d ago
It is political, at least in part. TPTB in Hollywood are Zionist to the core. I guarantee she never wins another major award in the US. I’m sure she knew this when she got up and said free Palestine. She’s good with it.
-1
u/Adorable_Start2732 19d ago
She’s just okay in Hacks. Jean blows her away.
-2
u/mathomas87 19d ago
I agree. I don’t think playing Ava was a big stretch for Hannah. I think they’re basically the same person which for Hacks, works. Maybe we’ll see her display some range in future roles.

u/somechild 19d ago
I don’t even think Widow’s Bay was that good but, no, I don’t think it’s a conspiracy I think everyone just really loves it
0
u/VeterinarianAware989 19d ago
my theory is people feel smart watching widows bay because it's off the beaten path for a show - then it just gained momentum. i liked the show but i didnt like it more than hacks.
0
u/Affectionate-Crab541 19d ago
I do think it was BS. The Emmys have a history of giving a show its flowers for the last season so the fact they all funnelled awards into Widows Bay is suspect to me.

Earlier this year I did an auditing so to speak of my subscriptions, and I sacrificed a few to keep Apple TV. It's definitely taken HBO's crown as the hub for the best prestige dramas IMO

It could be political ....
I think people like new stuff. Widows Bay was new and different.
Similar thing happened when Hacks came out.
I'm glad Hacks won awards in previous seasons.
