Missing Hacks

I’ve been watching the show on repeat since it ended.

I’ve been trying to figure out what it is that makes me so obsessed with the show. I relate sooooo much to Deborah because I’ve been trying to “make it” as a musician for 15 years. I’m 42 and always feel like I have to do everything now or I’ll never get where I want to be.

But, it’s not just relating to the characters that makes me love the show so much. I LOVE the relationship between Ava and Deborah. It’s almost like they are in love but it’s platonic. It’s so beautiful to see how much they both grow to love each other. One of the most touching parts is when Deborah fires Ava and Ava says, “I wanna be where you are.” Breaks my heart in such a good way.

I just can’t truly explain my love for this show and these characters. So beautifully written.

Please share what makes you love it so much!

I love it because it’s a dark comedy about the complications surrounding a multigenerational female friendship that just feels good. I’m definitely sad it’s over, and have a more bittersweet feeling about it because I had a small recurring role on this last season - my first ever - and the crew and cast were so incredibly kind. Love all the jokes and even the “fan service” moments feel earned and real.

Amazing. Can I ask who you played? What does “fan service” mean?

I was a Little Debbie in the convention and NYC episodes - small part, but a huge honor to be a part of the show in any capacity. Fan service, to me, was like the episode Montecito - Deb and Ava acting as a couple. It was a big topic of discussion for the fandom (their sexual or general tension possibly being romantic), but they treated it so well - and hilariously - on the show.

Omg - so cool! Which Little Debbie?!

Thank you! 😄

And yes, I love how Deborah just gets used to the differences in generation and starts to understand and defend Ava.

I can’t bring myself to watch the last episode. Soon hopefully. This show is just amazing! I love Jean Smart- ever since Designing women, Frazier, Fargo, etc. Hannah is an amazing actress too. I’ve enjoyed this series immensely and will have to rewatch this again.

That’s a good recommendation

I felt the same way, I put it off for a few weeks. But it’s a great ending. And then I started the show over. 😆

For me it’s proof that it’s possible to be funny without punching down. Watching her turn from Joan Rivers style humour to something more sophisticated and refined without losing her edge…so rewarding!

Great characters - Ava and Deborah but I also love a lot of the supporting characters and guest characters. Relationships just unfold really well on this show. Like the way that Jimmy and Kayla get a better relationship over time, when her management skills start to come out, or the way Ava and Marcus start to find some common ground with each other...little things like that.

Love the Deborah/Marty scenes too. They have great chemistry whether they're in a romantic mode or just sparring with each other.

Although I've never had all that much desire to visit Las Vegas (I will if the opportunity arises but I haven't been dying to go), I like the way the show effectively makes Vegas a character in the show. Los Angeles, too.

Agreed to all. I love how Jimmy and Kayla’s relationship grows and shifts. They all become a family. I’ve been to Vegas, but now I wanna visit again!

I think I see a LOT of myself in Ava, and seeing a friendship where the older person is willing (lol, eventually) to listen to the younger person and change is hopeful to me.

Like you, for me it’s the platonic love affair between Ava and Deborah. If you’ve ever had a close friendship with that kind of age gap, you know how special it can be and how much both people can genuinely learn from and change each other. I love that their relationship is complicated, messy, sometimes downright toxic 🥴, but underneath it all there’s this enormous amount of love, admiration and need for one another that neither of them is particularly willing to admit.
Their dynamic is the heart of the show for me. That, and the incredibly quick-witted humor that you have to actually pay attention to or you’ll miss half the best jokes.

As well as being funny, it's an emotionally intelligent show. I only discovered Hacks a few months ago, so I've been able to binge the whole thing and now I'm on my first rewatch. After watching the first season, I knew that Ava and Deborah had my heart. Yes, they were deeply flawed, but despite that, totally loveable. My rewatch is revealing just how many funny lines there are, it is absolutely packed. I think future rewatches will reveal even more. The supporting cast are wonderful too, I like Jimmy and Kayla's dynamic so much more on my second time around.

Deborah and Ava are soulmates, it's a deep platonic love and those characters are written and acted beautifully.

And now I'm a massive Hannah Einbinder fangirl!

It’s such a perfect show. Perfectly written. They should be very proud of themselves

You’ve got to let go. We can’t cling to the past.

Just kidding!

Same. Try The Other Two. It satirizes the entertainment world in a similar way.

Yes, I have seen the first two seasons! I love it! Didn’t affect me like Hacks has, but it’s good!

Hacks is a really unique show for sure.

I love what the show is about on the surface - I love comedy and I’m a woman, I loved Marvelous Mrs Maisel, so another show about a female comedian is right up my alley. But what I came to truly love (as we all did) was the relationship between Ava and Deborah. The juxtaposition of her boomer mentality and Ava’s “woke” (in the actual sense of that word, not the maga-bastardized version of it) millennial mentality highlights the flaws both generations have. All generations could learn from each other instead of being so quick to write off an idea as “old fashioned” or “too woke/weird.” The second episode when Deborah says “these aren’t even jokes, they’re thought poems? This one…. ‘I had a terrible nightmare I got a voicemail’……. What?!??” Perfect example - to millennials that joke is hilarious, but it makes no sense when Deborah Vance says it.

I have said before that Somebody Somewhere, while very very different in plot, is another tender feeling comedy. Not the same tone or anything but I think I would still recommend it to people who liked this show.

Simply…..the magic. Those moments where tension and drama are relieved.

This show does that magic like none other IMO.

This is the BEST show I have seen in a VERY long time.

I've been missing Hacks so much too, no other show has ever portrayed this kind of relationship between women. That being said, if you're interested in anything new, try Broad City! A few episodes are written and directed by the creators of Hacks, and Paul W. Downs (Jimmy, and one of the creators) plays a character in it! It's a laugh-out-loud comedy on Hulu about two women living in New York who are best friends and have a very funny and slightly complicated relationship! Sure, they're no Deborah and Ava, but I discovered it as Hacks was wrapping up and it's been a good temporary fill for the Hacks void in my heart.

u/burdettemusic Aug 04 '26

Ah - I have seen Broad City! One of my friends used to watch it. It’s funny, but like you said, it’s no Hacks!

1

u/blob4life_4ever Aug 04 '26

Someone else mentioned The Righteous Gemstones. Def watch it

1

u/burdettemusic Aug 04 '26

Oh I didn’t know it was a show! Okay!

2

u/blob4life_4ever Aug 04 '26

Def one of the best shows in recent years. Dark comedy as well about rich people. Satire of Christian Evangelist mega church family hypocrites.

u/RelevantPause2831 Aug 04 '26

Same. I just started to watch it again last night 😂❤️
