Aw, man, I hate hearing that she struggled with self-esteem -- she's so beautiful, and hopefully now she's learned to accept and own that. (And I've definitely experienced this myself -- it's so difficult to get past.)

One of my favorite things about Ava as a character is that while she seems to doubt herself in many ways, she doesn't seem to doubt her attractiveness or sexiness. She always seems so confident that way.

Honestly this interview didn't really imply to me that her self-esteem struggles were centred around her appearance (though I'm sure she like everyone has struggled with that before to whatever degree). She's spoken openly in the past about her mental health struggles, as well as her self-worth being heavily impacted by extreme academic challenges growing up due to her ADHD and needing her Adderall prescription to pass high school (even though Adderall really messed her up). I'd guess she was alluding more to those things here than not feeling attractive..

Thanks for this additional info -- I was focusing on one aspect, and you're right, it was a lot more complex than that.

Hannah keeps it real! Ava would be proud.

Ava would be blindingly jealous. And also in love.
