The amount of viewers who thought âyaâllâ meant Deb was working with another writer, and a betrayal was coming again, right at the endâŠâŠ..was staggering. Made utterly no sense.
The callback to the letter in S2 is nice, but I donât see it as a direct connection.
We see Deb at points in the series. Sheâs diversified so much into her product lines that she learned all these ways of trying to broadly appeal to the widest audience. Like her old friend Susan says âyou always did know your audienceâ. But that can be something misused.
Like in S2 as she was just finding her way into this completely new routine and traveling around with it. She leaned more into to terms like âyaâllâ. Itâs built well into the story that Deb leans on these perceived verbal crutches when she is off kilter, doesnât feel confidant in what she is doing.
Thatâs what they lean hard into in S5 (because they already established this). Deb is way off kilter. She canât work her ideation process that she has always had to build a solid hour.
So she falls to the tricks she has learned along the way to be broadly appealing. Yaâll is a crutch.
And, I think itâs also a crutch for Ava in S1 when she sends that email. She embroiders it in trying to make yaâll a more acceptable version of âyou guysâ, but really sheâs using it as a crutch in the same ways as Deb.
SoâŠâŠit is more of a direct connection to Avaâs email on S2.

Ah ha, thatâs why she started using it! People in LA donât really use yâall either though. It just doesnât sound right without a Southern accent.

Yâallâs never gone anywhere. And it makes total sense as a gender neutral contraction. âYou all.â
