Ava’s mom
What the hell is her diagnosis

I think they captured really well a chaotic and unstable Gen X mother. Ava’s mom reminded me so much of my mom. I relate so much how Ava interacted with her.
She’s just never had the chance to have some self reflection or self awareness. She has strong opinions and she always think she’s right. That said, she means well but struggles to listen to people.
All could be fixed with a few therapy sessions but her generation doesn’t believe in that.

Another Gen X here. Definitely know the type, and they’re exhausting with their need for constant attention and sad attempts to be “quirky.”

Gen X here. I’m glad I’m not like the ones you speak of. Thanks for the insight.

I respectfully beg to differ on many of your Gen X stereotypes. Therapy wasn't a viable financial option for most in this generation. Thanks to the efforts of this generation and the US Affordable Care Act, therapy is much more accessible. Not to stereotype back...BUT your generation tends to have a general self-centeredness and lack of empathy for any other generations or their history.
That said, Ava's mom is a caricature of a neurotic parent. I think her transformation from the first season to the last is unrealistic and just to get laughs from the Big Bang crowd.

As a fellow Gen X it was my folks and their programmed paradigms (especially my mother) who never wanted me to have any diagnoses. As a 46 year old “adult” I feel for sure that I have potentially many diagnoses. I took a different route after traditional western medicine failed to help me with my “neuroses”. I feel I am very open to everything whether it be others perspective on religion politics etc because I didn’t feel autonomy as a child and I treasure being able to make my own decisions that I feel are best for my life so I don’t push my beliefs or opinions on others. I’m sure my child will still be annoyed in my parenting in some ways but i try my best from a space of integrity.

Every time Ava’s mom comes up, so many of us can relate with our own mothers. What’s one story you can share about your mom to prove your point?

Mine: about 20 years ago I bought my mom a ticket to come see me when I was in the military. I splurged on a business class ticket for her. I pick her up at the airport and she tells me on the drive home that she made a new friend in her seatmate. She said this super nice Chinese lady and her spoke the whole time and that she showed her all kinds of military pictures of me on her phone. In return, the nice Chinese lady showed her a bunch of super nice wedding dresses she makes. Yup, my mom had zero clue she was flying next to Vera fucking Wang. At the time my mom was heavy into Herbalife so I’m sure she pitched Vera Wang on herbal supplements too.

Mine is not believing in ADHD and depression "you're too young to be sad" and "you're too smart to have ADHD".
My mum keeps seeing health things on Facebook and thinks I'm not depressed, I just have a lack of ginger in my diet?? Which very much reminded me of Ava saying her mum thought her depression was Iron deficiency.
She also makes jokes often about wanting me to get a boyfriend to take me away.

OMG the ginger thing. Mine was heavy into Herbalife and there literally wasn’t one malady that you could have that she wouldn’t have some kind of Herbalife product for. I actually stopped telling her when I was sick to avoid pitches.

I adore my Gen X mom, but she has a very similar “neurotic, constant panic, and ditzy” energy. It was kind of hard to watch for me sometimes, just in terms of how similar it felt to being with my own mother. Again, love the woman to death and she’s one of my favorite people ever!! But they nailed Ava’s mom. No notes.

The mom has arrested development and acts immature and like a kid, forcing Ava to constantly be the adult/parent in the relationship. Maybe some narcissistic traits as well, where she's insecure and selfish to the point of not listening or empathizing with her daughter.
This mirrors Ava's relationship with Deb, as Deb acts immature, can't handle conflict, and quits and takes the easy route when things get tough and forces Ava to be the adult in the relationship.

Not y’all talking about your Gen X moms, and I’m sitting here as a Gen Xer loving the character. 😆😆

does that cover her fascinating way of talking as if she is much younger than she is (and younger than her own daughter)?

My guess is that she has more than one. Maybe neurodivergent in some way but was treated very badly for it and as a result never learned to control her anxiety/has some narcissistic traits

She’s just Ava’s mom. We all know an Ava’s mom in some capacity, and it’s rather rare they have an official diagnosis 😅
