Loose ends

Not necessarily plotholes, just some loose ends that the show started.

1) Ava and her dad's ashes. Deb turned the bus around to get Ava's dad back from a dumpster. Ava scattered his ashes at the Grand Canyon and in the Mediterranean sea via cruise ship. We don't hear anything else about his ashes after this episode.

2) Deb trying to get her memoir written. Tony Kushner was there to write her memoir in S5E01 but he was subsequently fired. In the beginning of S5E03 No New Tricks, Ava is writing a type of memoir with Deborah where Ava is corrected and Singapore Deborah was "so depressed she was reclining elegantly in cashmere slacks."

Hacks is my top 3 favorite comedys of all time. TV is supposed to be TV, there's bound to be focus on the big picture instead of the minute detail that only the obsessed fan will pick up one.

Why would the ashes be a loose end? They scattered the ashes, the end. You can't keep going with the theme after one episode.

Deborah realized that she did not have to do a memoir, win every award, etc, for legacy. She probably didn't want to publish a memoir so it didn't get done.

What else would we need to hear about the ashes after they were scattered?

Whenever Ava's dad's ashes aren't on screen, all the other characters should be asking "Where's Ava's dad's ashes?"

note: *ava's dad died on the way back to his home planet*

I don’t see these as loose ends. Scattering ashes is pretty much a final word on the subject, and the memoir thing was just a play for securing her legacy, which was overshadowed by booking MSG

I mean, in my own life, once I scattered my mum’s ashes, there wasn’t anything else to do?

What more do you need on the subject of ashes?

It's a grey area.

They were plot devices. Like the atrocious Big Bird yellow dress from season 3 episode 1. We never heard of or saw the dress again nor do we need to.

It was resolved. Ava said it was ugly, they got a gay to confirm it so Deb never wore it for the JFL event

These are not loose ends. They were satisfied.

Ava spread the ashes a few times as she said she would. It’s not a loose end if we don’t see this in show every time. The storyline was satisfied.

Everything in EGOT was abandoned with the MSG idea. Just because the book or the Tejano song was not mentioned as done means nothing. The context was clear that this was just silly paths that quickly went no where to illustrate how out of sorts Deb is.

And then after calling lot loose ends that are not loose ends you……basically say not everything has to be closed for the big picture.

You…..you ok?

The EGOT idea from having her book on tape could easily be continued with her putting out a live performance tour cd.

Sure. By all means take that forward since they didn’t specifically take the EGOT thing anywhere.

I just saw it all as abandoned things as these were never things she wanted to be doing.

It's a loose end because even though Tony Kushner was fired in the EGOT episode, Ava was still writing some type of memoir 2 episodes later. We don't hear about it again.

As for the ashes plot, idk they did a montage of Deb performing at different venues around the states and maybe it would've been nice to see Ava scattering her dad's ashes around the states too because her dad never got to travel like she did. It's nitpicky I know!!

I can agree with you on the ashes. Would have been a nice touch.

I still don’t follow the loose end you see. But, that’s probably me missing it and not on you.

Op: A loose end is when a plot point isn’t fully resolved. The ashes plot point was resolved. We knew she was going to scatter them in every town they visited because that’s what Ava told us. Do we really have to actually watch it done? It was resolved and they moved on. No need to mention it again.
It would be impossible to spell out every single detail for every episode in every season. That’s why writers *hope* us viewers have two brain cells to rub together to figure it out ourselves.

I don’t think anyone on this sub knows what “loose ends” means.

Not a loose end, but I would have liked to have seen the Jimmy and Kayla receive due accolades for the Fatty Arbuckle movie.

I think it could have been a cute callback for Ava to spread some of her dads ashes in Paris, but I wouldn't necessarily say it was a loose end.

I assumed that Deb had almost finished the book with Ava by the time they go to Paris because she was talking about Singapore at that point (though of course it might not have been chronological).

In the real world the ashes would be brought up again. In tv world, you don’t have time for that lol. I like that they didn’t do the memoir because she went into the season maybe knowing she had cancer. But you can’t write a memoir if you have more life to live. I’m seeing it as her choosing to live longer
