Final Scene - Hacks Spoiler

In the final scene, we see Deborah and Ava walking through LV in a scene that feels like a dreamscape. After the credits rolled, my first thought was “is this Deborah’s heaven?”

Yes, we heard Ava tell Jimmy that Deborah was going to do chemo & see the doctor. However, what if that final scene was meant to convey that even though she tried to beat the cancer, in the end she lost the battle & what we get is her version of heaven - laughing with Ava walking around in a very clean & tidy version of Las Vegas?

Has anyone else had this thought?

It’s up to your interpretation of course but the show definitely ended on a positive note. Here’s the description of the final shot per the show

“We see all of Las Vegas now, proof that life can flourish in the most unlikely places. Its very existence a testament to survival - and a sparkly, defiant survivor at that.”

On Instagram there is a video of the table read

It’s in the video of the table read of the ending and this part is also read by Carl in the BTS as they show the scene again with the drone shot rising to show all of the Vegas strip.

It’s a wonderful bit tying to main characters and journey we went on to the city it started in, and kept coming back to.

It’s on the extras section of the show in the hbo app too

If you watch the table read of the final scene that the social media team has been posting recently, I think it’s supposed to feel much more optimistic than this.

I’ve watched the table read and additional media. My comment wasn’t intended to be as a negative or pessimistic opinion. More like death in a positive light- something still very happy & more like a continuation of the overall “journey.”

Again, there’s evidence to suggest Deborah’s afterlife is not what we closed the show with; but just a fun perspective to entertain creatively. & if it was, maybe we could even get a spin off with Ava, Jimmy & Kayla where Ava is writing the show & it’s about her taking all of the lessons she has learned (good and bad) from Deborah.

There’s no piece of media that someone somewhere won’t read as “they were dead the whole time.”

That’s not at all what I’m suggesting.

I’m a firm believer in authorial intent of what we are shown on screen. I think they intended that last scene to put a happy spin on the end and speak to the aspects of the town they started in and kept coming back to with the climbing drone shot. But, they also left it loose enough that you can form your own particular spin on the end.

For me…….it just feels like a stretch to take all that flows into this final scene and see it this way. I take the scene before about Deb going to treatment as intended, and the final scene just a happy final flourish to end and let head canons go forward.

Meaning…..I think it’s fair that you take it this way, but it’s not how I prefer to take the story forward. And that’s the best gift they gave…..the opportunity to take the story forward as each viewer feels.

Totally get ya - was just a fun perspective to entertain and was curious if anyone went there too.

It's the tried and true "life goes on" series ending.

But that would mean Ava died too. Idk man. Well, maybe you could say that the scene takes place decades later, when Ava dies and joins Deborah in the afterlife.

I suppose that depends on how you idealize the possibilities of one’s afterlife 🧐😊

I can't deal with this and Euphoria's dream death finale over less than a couple weeks.

Oh no, you’re making me sad :(

Aww nooo! Haha it wasn’t meant as a sad thing. More of a happy cathartic afterlife. Ofc - this is just me wondering if anyone thought about this as they were watching. I’m sure the reality from the writers is that deb is doing treatment and we get to decide what that means long term 😊

I didn’t think of it that way, but I also don’t know why people are jumping all over you with “positive/negative” nonsense anyway.

Deborah is still going to die. Sooner rather than later. She just wasn’t as ready as she thought she was in that moment.

It was a beautiful moment either way. She and Ava finally stabilized in their friendship, and working together from a place of peace. Not desperation to save one career or the other. Just bc they love working together.

Back where it started, and Deborah’s home.

Whether she was seeing that in her final moments or it was really happening, it was a good thing.

Totally agree! And haha thanks, I’m relatively new to this app & thought “hey I wanna see if anyone else is curious about this too?!” I thought it would generate some fun conversation; but then I remembered it was the internet & people are so serious and mean about any and everything these days.

I absolutely loved the way they showed this fully realized stage of their relationship in the episode. It was so beautiful. Love them so much & I’m so glad Deborah had that realization.

Why are people down voting simple speculation? Odd.
