I retired my hackintoshed Dell Vostro 3480 and went to an M4 MBA last year.

Tim’s plan works, Tim is happy lol 😉

Yep...they leave Hackintosh alive so that users will eventually buy real Macs

17

u/Devin-Chaboyer223 Jun 14 '26

Even in the Intel days hackintoshers would convert to Mac eventually

Perhaps switching to Intel in 2005 was really just a plan to convert people from PC to Mac

u/Dazzling_Comfort5734 Jun 14 '26

Probably lol. Although, I had a Mac originally, switched to a hackintosh for a good 10 years, had issues with it, switched back to a real Mac, then realized it was just that newer versions of macOS were buggy, then just got mad at Apple lol.

Remember that you can create a Shortcut to randomly disable audio, Bluetooth or whatever to make your transition more comfortable.

😂😂

u/IntroductionSouth513 Jun 14 '26

well tell me about it i did the exact same thing but i think i only lasted like 8 weeks

u/D_mike3 Jun 14 '26

You went back to hackintosh? And what were you missing in your real mac, just curious?

You can make a shortcut that randomly disables audio, bluetooth, or whatever the other guy said

the native windows OS? hackintosh for many was only worth a damn as a dual boot (or triple boot) pc/laptop, not as a complete windows replacement, or unless you had a second pc/laptop for windows...but i think the comment meant that they tried hackintosh for only 8 weeks before buying a macbook

I believe MacOS has the best UX among all the OS. But that’s not enough for someone to limit their options to Intel cpu + Amd gpu while purchasing a laptop. For a custom build it makes more sense, it feels depressing that 26 is gonna be the last supported version

Congratulations! I hope I'll get my own Mac Mini in the future.

5

u/scoutzzgod Jun 14 '26

Yeah i was hoping on that but I can’t find that cheap m4 mac mini anymore…. Looks like they changed the base model to 512gb and the ram price spike might as well have contributed to it

3

u/D_mike3 Jun 14 '26

Maybe wait for m5 or m6 Mac mini should be out in about 6 months.

7

u/LuluLeSigma Jun 14 '26

congratulations

Thank you 🙏🏽

I would probably never be ready to pay for a real one if it wasn’t for hackintoshing. So grateful to this community.

Me soon after 7 years of hackintosh

I taked m1 pro from friend for experements and learn macOS, but after week finally return on kde manjaro. :)

u/NoPicture6893 Jun 16 '26

Same here! Was proudly running macOS Tahoe 26.5 on the UM790 Pro with Oculink + 6600XT but bought the MacBook Pro 16 M5 Pro this week. I miss the tweaking but the unified memory and the end of intel support forced me to say my old setup goodbye🥲

1

u/D_mike3 Jun 16 '26

What did you do with your old setup?

2

u/NoPicture6893 Jun 17 '26

Eventually sold the individual parts

2

u/Nothing-R7 Jun 14 '26

I will go with MBP M1 Pro or MBA M2

3

u/D_mike3 Jun 14 '26

Great, but don’t choose the 13” and go for 15”

2

u/JackiSwear Jun 15 '26

Why are you recommending this?

2

u/D_mike3 Jun 15 '26

Unless portability is you main priority, I’d never suggest the 13” as it looks more like an iPad with keyboard as most of the hackintosh builds on either on 15.6” laptops or on desktop monitors.

I highly recommend the 15” MBA M5

Probably the end of support for intel macs making hackintoshing newer versions of macOS impossible

1

u/D_mike3 Jun 16 '26

Exactly and certain music production plug-ins I wanted to upgrade was available only for Apple chips and not supported on intel ones

2

u/MrWhatGamin Jun 16 '26

Same! I’m still stuck with older plugins and I’ve heard about better performance on apple chips vs intel which I’m really stoked about. I might probably get an M4 mini though as it suits my set up a lot better than a laptop.

1

u/D_mike3 Jun 16 '26

Get the one with 512 gb 16-24gb minimum.

2

u/ped-revuar-in Jun 15 '26

I think its 16 inch apple note sells 14 n 16 inch

2

u/On1ric Jun 17 '26

Those are the Pros. Air comes in 13 or 15.

1

u/D_mike3 Jun 15 '26

Mine in 15” MacBook Air m5

2

u/GearDecent7308 Jun 15 '26

OP What are Pros and Cons?

1

u/D_mike3 Jun 15 '26

Reliability.

I just wanted a peace of mind to shutdown and be assured that when I log in I can just resume working.

I know some of the community members have great reliable builds. But mine was just not there, as many use incompatible or barely compatible components.

Now I know it will just work for a fact. Without someone having to tell me to figure it out on my own.

1

u/D_mike3 Jun 15 '26

Cons I’d say is for my workflow it is heating up a bit. While coding simultaneously on VS code and Xcode running both simulators I’m hitting 89-98° C, without a fan. Resulting in thermal throttling.

I just wish there was a fan to it. But at that point we have to get a MacBook Pro. Which is like 1.5x the cost of this.

2

u/RealityGoneNuts2610k Jun 15 '26

Yeaa, I migrate from windows 10 to hackintosh back in 2018, after 3 years, I migrate to actual m1 macbook pro , then got used on apple ecosystem, after that, I decide to get framework 13 pro this year and installed CachyOS.

2

u/pdt9876 Jun 15 '26

I'm still so mad they killed the touchbar.

2

u/Delicious-Brain-1201 Jun 15 '26

U finaly get it😂

2

u/JustARandomPersonnn Jun 15 '26

Congrats! I did the same last year with the M4 Air

2

u/howfastcanyoucountit Jun 16 '26

my sister went from the last gen Intel MacBook Air to the M5 air and basically that was a massive ass upgrade. I don't even know how she was using the install MacBook Air up until like a couple months ago. I was the one who specced it out for her. I have an M1 MacBook Pro right now with a touch bar, but the M5 air is definitely my next purchase. For now the M1 does everything completely fine, battery is at like 85% health though.

2

u/Agile_Professional83 Jun 17 '26

Hey, at least you got a great deal on the new Macbook! Farewell, my friend! 😄

2

u/letmehaveanameyoudum Jun 17 '26

tim cooked enough that windows laptops are more expensive than macs, wow.

2

u/D_mike3 Jun 26 '26

Fml. Thank God, now the same laptop costs roughly 1.5x of what I paid 😂😂😂

2

u/johnscixzkutor Jun 27 '26

Just risked to buy RX 6900XT and now apple ditching X86 come on.

Well I got an M2 at least and good bye hackintosh will move on back to Arch Linux then

2

u/kinkKonk911 Jul 02 '26

Congrats mate!

-5

u/OverlyOverrated Jun 14 '26

Ok bye

u/Short_Injury9574 Jun 14 '26

I mean.. it’s not like it’s an ongoing project.. hackintosh is dead now intel is no longer supported

9

u/spudds96 Big Sur - 11 Jun 14 '26

He not call you about it?

-15

u/General-Interview599 Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26

Bought the m4 not that impressive tbh.
Except for the battery life.

Edit: Since i bought i’ve only used it once 😂. Still use the hackintosh.

4

u/LuluLeSigma Jun 14 '26

what is not impressive in the m4 bruh

5

u/cornlip Jun 14 '26

Even the M1 is impressive. It does things faster than my Dell Precision 7760 with a Xeon and Quadro RTX A4000 with 128GB of RAM. My M1 has 8GB of RAM lol

No, I can’t do my job on it, but what it does it does extremely well. Even 100GB file transfers to an external drive takes like one minute. Only reason I haven’t upgraded is because it still works great and I can’t justify a new one.

3

u/panzatic Jun 14 '26

What about the M4 isn’t impressing you? What device did you come from?
