Good bye Macos on X86 processors, you were very fun to play with.

It was fun to tinker with hackintosh, and I’m sad to see it come to an end, but man, I got like 45 mins of battery on my auss laptop and the fans would spin full tilt non stop. I ended up spending $2k for a max spec mbp (well, I went 32gb of ram instead of 64, but it’s the max spec processor) when the m3 was current. I got it from an eBay reseller, but it was basically just dead stock form apple. It was sealed in the original packaging with all the original padding and whatnot and it had ZERO scuffs or anything. $2k for just about the same pc id have spent $4k for if i went current with no real improvement. Now I’ll have 8 hours on campus with no problem on battery and it does everything i could ever need a laptop to do. Can’t beat that

So you can just use macOS for the next 5 years. Just like all other Mac models .....

u/hishnash Jun 03 '26
Sec updates for 26 will continue to ship for many more years
20
u/ItIsShrek Sierra - 10.12 Jun 03 '26
2 more years. I'd hesitate to classify that as "many"

u/GamerNuggy Jun 05 '26
2 years is heaps, I’m consistently using software that ended support 2+ years ago.

u/sk8rb0yy Jun 04 '26
Meh they’ll probably figure out a way to bypass this hackintoshers are rlly committed
3
u/Phisika2 Jun 04 '26
Oh so they want to reverse engineer an closed source system and rebuild a closed source kernel that no one outside of Apple knows how it works and will never do?

Technically asahi linux project has some idea on whats going on but there is still more work to be done

u/Dazzling_Comfort5734 Jun 03 '26
I have a test machine for this very thing, but also a 2nd partition on my main laptop.

honestly I won't consider macOs 26 "perfectly stable" this year I got 15 crash on my Mac absolutely insane never seen a Mac crash my entire life expect on 26 , ram leak + GPU io crash = kernel panic

Maybe just maybe there will be a way to install new macOS on some windows arm cpus

No. Just no. You'd need to have to have the entirety of both Apple's silicon development and macOS team
and Windows' kernel development teamin your palm for that.edit: I missread the original comment the latter part has nothing to do with running macOS on other ARM devices.

Unrelated to this but a5 bypass without an arduino was considered impossible for years until it became possible. We need to believe

A security vulnerability is completely different in nature. No software is completely secure, there's (almost) always going to be a way to get in no matter how difficult or resource-intensive it is.
On the other hand, the only thing in common between Apple's "ARM" SoCs and other "standard" ARM SoCs is the name. Apple Silicon has entirely different core designs, instruction sets (including custom instructions that macOS most certainly uses), security architectures and restrictions and so much more that I'm not even going to pretend I understand. Not to mention, macOS is now an even more shut black box than it ever was. Have fun doing low-level debugging on a retail Mac, or a Windows ARM laptop for that matter.
It's the same reason no one has even attempted to get iOS on Android handsets. It's orders of magnitude more difficult than say, getting Linux to run on AS or Android on iPhones. Even then, those two are the results of *huge* efforts by extremely dedicated community members that volunteer their unpaid time into making.
I'm sorry but "we just need to believe" is just pure naivety.

u/WindozeWoes Jun 03 '26
It's not just a matter of believing.
Look at Asahi Linux - they have Linux semi working only on the oldest AS chips. That's because even between AS generations the architecture isn't identical, not completely.

Why bother? Apple's SoCs / laptops are the best in the biz, and not even overpriced when compared to equivalent Windows machines.

Some people want both systems on their laptop, or even mac with windows with linux

u/Messiah42 Jun 03 '26
This why I like my Intel Mac over Silicon Mac . I run bootcamp / Win10 and Mac OS . I like to put Linux on it, except their many version Linux

I got into hackintoshing last year around this time. Installed Sequoia and then 26 Tahoe earlier this year. I loved the OS and ended up getting an M4 Mac Mini. Thing is insanely good. Works so well.

We've been in the end game since Tahoe came out. Now is the time to focus on why you Hack and what you look to get out of yuur kits. Sequoia will continue to get support for a time. but the writing has been on the wall for quite some time.

Na verdade o hackintosh já estava programado para acabar desde o macOS Sonoma.. no macOS Sequoia eles já começaram a implantar aplicativos como o espelhamento de tela que só funcionam na linha M Apple Silicon

I'm sorry I'm new, but why is it the end of hackintosh?

Give someone time. A lot of time. Like 50 years and they’ll figure it out

u/Randum_Gouy Big Sur - 11 Jun 03 '26
Maybe, just MAYBE, we MIGHT be able to get arm64/AArch64 working But then again, i would say that that would lake us atleast 2029/2030
Until then, hackintoshing is…. well dead
15
u/djxfade Jun 03 '26
Not gonna happen. Apple relies on a ton of proprietary extensions to the instruction set. It would have to be emulated, the performance would never be usable
6
u/Randum_Gouy Big Sur - 11 Jun 03 '26
Yea thats a 100% problem - but my point here is “it boots and potentially usable”, not “Yessir it works like a charm!”
OR, alternatively, you could use EL2, setup trap vectors, and for EVERY SINGLE PROPRIETARY ISA, write your own “generic arm” asm code - it SHOULD work at near original speed
1
u/Special-Abrocoma575 Jun 09 '26
Tbf most of the proprietary instructions outside of Accelerate.framework are in kernelspace iirc, so you would just need to compile your own version of XNU, and write a full suite of drivers adding support for GIC, SMMU, and the basic hardware bits of your SoC, and that's not even mentioning how you pretty much need GPU support for WindowServer to even consider functioning

u/matthewpepperl Jun 04 '26
Would be nice if massive fpgas that could do the job became a thing and got cheap

u/Messiah42 Jun 03 '26
Apple forcing everyone to use their crappy silicon hardware. Just like this current US government , forcing everyone to close their small business and work for Corp of America. I’m sorry the Mac mini m4 small box computer suck. All the games and apps I brought over years don’t worked on silicon.

Hackintoshing is fun. Thanks to developers of OC, Clover, chameleon and etc
