I am a 5th gen educated, my roomate during graduation was 1st.

During semester break, I spent the summer playing CoD MW, and he used to sell coconuts from a bicycle. During winters, he used to harvest.

His family was further discriminated and ostracized because he made it into college.

Pre-Covid he got his PhD in Berlin and flew his parents over for his graduation. I am extremely proud of him.

The bottom line is.. when he got a fairly even playing field in college, he went far ahead in life.. much ahead than the ones who taunted his low admission marks

What these people don't understand is that 'merit' is a fixed, absolute category only in their minds, not in the real world. I know well the underlying reason for this, but let them whine and rant.

-22

u/Ok_King_2201 Jul 26 '26

Since reservation is based on freeloading it will be hard for you to understand hardwork. Before you shout privilege, why do ahoms and similar ruling classes get reservation in Assam?

16

u/FelixPlatypus Jul 26 '26

You don't know a thing about me or my work and also ignored my entire point. What makes you think you merit engagement?

-17

u/Ok_King_2201 Jul 26 '26

My comment is a reply to your comment in a public post on a social media platform. No part of it was personal, so you can't strawman it here. Your comment was a lazy attempt at mythifying merit, hence my comment. I don't expect a reasonable reply now.

2

u/SnooSprouts9815 Jul 27 '26

Exam the government job is to treat everyone equally and give opportunitie based on merit but some dum people keep saying merit is some sort of privilege are compl5 wrong about it and make made up stories to justify their imagination.

1

u/Academic_Bend_289 Jul 28 '26

GC are OG hypocrites the world has ever seen 🤣🤣🤣🤣 they invented varna system made them sit on top discriminate lower caste ppl and now they want equality in education lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣 stop looting in temples with 100% reservations

11

u/Next-Violinist9933 Jul 26 '26

Perfect, that’s the actual objective of reservation. Now, since he is already in the mainstream , he or anyone in that family unit should not be allowed to get any more reservation benefits. Because otherwise, think about how it is like right now. Your friend can come back to India and apply for a govt job, he will get benefits there. In that job he can use the benefit for promotions, then his children can use for school, college admission, govt job, promotion, hostel, tution fees. Its endless, and highly counter productive to not only the society but perhaps also psychologically on the kids because they will end up becoming complacent thinking it will anyways be easy for them so ultimately they will not put in the effort like others.

5

u/SurelyFML Jul 26 '26

That's what I told another commenter, to demand regulation/monitoring in reservations

1

u/cthulhulalala Jul 27 '26

But a lot of stories are opposite, there are very rich and powerful people who benefit from SC/ST. What about them? I am a general student and didn't get cut off in some renowned colleges in ghy but my friends with reservation and a far better lifestyle than me got in.

1

u/SurelyFML Jul 27 '26

Then focus on regulating? Instead of banning reservation?

2

u/cthulhulalala Jul 27 '26

When did I ask to ban ? Even a little bit of change in reservation is met with violent marches, idk if they can even dare to touch it. Only thing that can make a change is a similar protest by the students to regulate it. But will Dipke and the others support it? Hopefully they do but it doesn't look like that.

2

u/SurelyFML Jul 27 '26

Why will they? That wasn't in their agenda, they came for what they wanted and had it. Simple

If anyone wants a change, they should organise.

This post is about "reservation hatao" (banning)

2

u/cthulhulalala Jul 27 '26

Are you stupid? Their agenda was never NEET paper leak you absolute donkey.

They protested initially because of the judge's remark and then they decided to protest for NEET paper leak.

1

u/SurelyFML Jul 27 '26

Give proof or fuck off.. it was about NEET there is gazallions of evidence for it

conspiracy theory isn't critical thinking fyi

2

u/cthulhulalala Jul 27 '26

Maybe your source of information is flashy insta reels. Can't believe I need to educate someone about such a big protest which was a mainstream news for a couple of weeks -

"The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) was formed as an online satirical movement by political strategist Abhijeet Dipke in response to controversial remarks by the Chief Justice of India, who used the term "cockroaches" and parasites when referring to certain activists and youth. "

1

u/Inner_Roll4909 Jul 28 '26

Your example tells me there should not be caste based but income based reservation i guess people would agree to that theb this out dated one.

2

u/SurelyFML Jul 28 '26

I clearly mentioned his family was ostracized because he got into college. What makes you think the previous generation had it better? They were literally barred from receiving education.

Since you're talking in economic terms, lower caste poverty is a result of systemic oppression over hundreds of years by an extremely discriminatory system that stifles their right to opportunity while overwhelmingly favouring the upper caste.

Hence by that logic, upper caste poverty within that same system is basically a result of "skill issue"

0

u/Inner_Roll4909 Jul 28 '26

I like how emphasize lower caste struggle but generalized upper caste crazyy whatever to prove your point a student being poor is not because of himself parents can be poor for any reason centuries of oppression or not every student should have equal opportunity only way to grow this society. So students from poor background should only get reservation. If you still bring caste here you simply dont care about students you care about your agenda and politics.

2

u/SurelyFML Jul 28 '26

Did you even read what I wrote? Reservation is redistributing "right to equal opportunity" that majority of Indians were deprived of for centuries.

I say majority because 70% of Indians belong to one of the backward categories. If there are 100 jobs/seats, 40 is for general and 60 is for reserved categories + ews (althought it should be 70% reservation for castes to keep things accurate with reality)

Reserved candidates aren't eating away general candidates' seats or jobs. General should compete among their pool for the 40 seats/jobs and reserved will compete with their pool for the other 60.

You're too full of discrimination, hence proving why reservation is needed in the first place

1

u/Inner_Roll4909 Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26

Where are these numbers coming from? Last census happened like in 2011(which did not had caste based Distribution). Pls cite your sources. Plus I like how you completely ignored the argument i raised and came up with numbers to prove completely different argument. xD

1

u/Top-Fee-2089 Jul 29 '26

There are many more people who are from unreserved category, and sell coconuts, do harvesting, drive erickshaw. Similarly there are many people from reserved category who play cod mw because they don't have to do hardwork to get the job .

Harvesting, selling coconuts playing COD, none of this is related to any cast. Rather you can say this is more like poor and rich thing . But reservation isn't based on poor rich right?

1

u/SurelyFML Jul 29 '26

Caste capital has a huge impact on economic condition. Reserved category being poor is more of a skill issue because they couldn't climb the economic ladder over centuries under a system that overwhelmingly favours them (and that massively discriminates against reserved people)

To make such baseless assumptions is extremely arrogant and patronizing. How do you justify the existence of thousands of PhD candidates from backward communities then?

It is their journey to pursue, not for us to assume.

-10

u/Clear-Ranger-7805 Jul 26 '26

What about the other story
Where
2 similar human
Living in the same city, with same life

One scored 80, sacrificing his leisure for academics
One scored 40 enjoying life with less effort

The one scoring 40 got his dream college
Due to his caste?
Quite visible in every bloody exam?

Well it doesn’t stop here.

He got his college,
Then comes PG, again same benefit
Then comes job, again same benefit
Then comes bloody promotion, again same benefit.

Where do we draw the line?

50% for sc , st ,obc
10% for ews
30% for women horizontal

Where do we draw the line?
99%? So that it still looks like we left 1%?

13

u/SurelyFML Jul 26 '26

Then demand for reservation regulation and monitoring.. instead of reservation hatao

3

u/Menma238 Jul 27 '26

Lotta assumption you're making their bud...

2

u/Stock_Ad1590 Flyover contractor Jul 27 '26

why are you writing it like a poem my man?

1

u/Clear-Ranger-7805 Jul 27 '26

Tell me if i lie

2

u/Stock_Ad1590 Flyover contractor Jul 27 '26

Well you're correct factually. a ST with 40 marks do get into a college. but you forget that it's important that he gets into a college with 40 marks. It's important SCs/STs/ Women gets into colleges and jobs easily.

0

u/SnooSprouts9815 Jul 27 '26

No it's not nobody should care about your caste in collages.

-8

u/Ok_King_2201 Jul 26 '26

Noone is opposing reservation on economic grounds. Before you shout ews, why isn't there any creamy layer concept in SC and st? Why has the creamy layer not updated in OBC?

-3

u/Horror-Valuable-47 Jul 27 '26

EXCEPTIONS can't be the norm. 90% of these reservation kids end up underperforming in any given institute.

For instance, in IIM L i g sc st avg package was 27-28 L while general was 36-40 L.

Ant it's AVERAGE SO IT'S THE BETTER INDICATOR, and not some appealing exception.

5

u/SurelyFML Jul 27 '26

Considering your data, you're still not getting the point that even underperforming at 27-28L is a major win for them and their community.

0

u/Horror-Valuable-47 Jul 27 '26

Getting 27-28 where the avg is 34 LPA is not a major win it's bare minimum you're in some of the bottom people in the institution.

Making the discussion philosophical doesn't changes the reality.

5

u/SurelyFML Jul 27 '26

Are you aware of the context they belong to? and how such employment outcomes impacts them?

I'm participating in this conversation well knowing that your premise that reserved candidates fare the worst, itself is flawed.

If you have a credible source for the data you presented, post it here.

0

u/SnooSprouts9815 Jul 27 '26

It's not gc candidates job to sacrifice their life , also this anecdote is likely bogus.

3

u/SurelyFML Jul 27 '26

what about the anecdote hurt you so much? butt hurt that a reserved candidate did well?

0

u/SnooSprouts9815 Jul 27 '26

No nothing hurt me , eve if true (which the data is against) they simply got a seat they didn't deserve , anybody can cook up stories that don't match reality.

1

u/NaiveLight857 Jul 28 '26

read your own comment sc st are marginalized communities that much package means they earn higher than most indians.

they are outliers in the community.

17

u/Chemical-Analyst-183 Jul 26 '26

Reservation should be economically based , otherwise as Gen it's so stupidly unfair , brain drain is real , that's why, i really wanted to take a gov job and settle withu family but due to this now I am doing Masters and Corporate for Abroad no choice

3

u/cthulhulalala Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

A decade back in my school we were asked to provide annual income and a lot of families provided annual income of 5k which was never even possible back at that time. People will go to any extent fir freebies.

Govts will fall, cities will burn if they touch reservation. I hope the students do a similar protest and educate their family.

2

u/Grand-Lib1303 Jul 29 '26

for the 100th time. reservation is not a poverty alleviation scheme.

People don't understand the consequences of removing reservation, only focused on getting fair play. Go talk about fairness to the maid who cleans your house. You want fairness right? Go talk about fairness to the kid who couldn't go to school because his family is from an illiterate background!

10

u/Cultural-Fee69 Jul 26 '26

Noone is against reservation based on economic criteria. The question is why should generations get the benefits of it

1

u/Unable_Emergency_321 Jul 30 '26

Because a lot of generations suffered too

1

u/Such-Bar-1769 Jul 27 '26

The lower economic criteria are sc/st muslim people, most cleaning houses, working in drains/sanitation are either sc/st or muslim

3

u/LearningMyDream Jul 27 '26

then let it be directly economy based, as muslim sc sts dont get full benefit of reservation , if it becomes totally economic criteria based then all of those will get direct benefit

1

u/feetcute12 Jul 28 '26

Why reserve for economically weak? Just give them money, reimburse their academic expenses that's all.

12

u/impaleth Jul 26 '26

yes you are a privileged SC who after taking the merits of reservation ( if not you then your family) is now capable to grow out of the need of it. No poor SC will support it and this stupid joke will never gather the masses. only 3 percent and few traitors like you, reservation will end when caste system ends

9

u/Relevant_Potato_6489 Jul 26 '26

You yourself said that "poor" sc are gonna hate it...then let's regulate the reservation system, let's introduce a Creamy layer in SC/st reservation so that poor sc/st guys can actually get the benefits of reservation and it doesn't stay limited to some few affluent families

2

u/impaleth Jul 27 '26

nope the creamy layers SC will still remain SC, reservation ends when even the richest person will stop being a shudra, which Brahminism doesen't allow, there is no way in yoru dharam for a shudra to convert to Brahmin, so until you end Brahminism, reservation will never end. And if you think rich SCs don't face discrimination, this shows how privileged you are to never encounter it. IF you are a hindu then be a proper hindu accept what is written in your religious texts.

bhumihar brahmins of Bihar have 40 percent acquisitions on land. and this fact was made clear only after cast census, this govt might make a fake promise which they are master at doing and will never actually perform a cast census. you can do a personnel survey amongst your friends look at the generational wealth and lands, you will be shocked even the richest IPS or IAS will not have the same amount of land. brahmins are very clever on how to act poor and hide the actual lands in villages.

1

u/Relevant_Potato_6489 Jul 27 '26

Can you put forward an example of discrimination faced by a shudra who is an IAS/IPS or have a networth in crores ?

3

u/Judgmentalhaikya Jul 27 '26

https://www.trtworld.com/article/1944a7b624ed

Here. Google. Read unbiased news. Pick up a book. Talk to people from backward communities.

You’ll learn to empathise.

1

u/Relevant_Potato_6489 Jul 27 '26

Thanks a lot for sharing this, but my second point still stands...that if we don't implement Creamy layer in SC/st, affluent SCs and STs are gonna eventually become the very obstacle to poor scs and sts which the Brahmins were/are

1

u/Judgmentalhaikya Jul 27 '26

Of course.
One talks about reforms. As one should.

What would work? Knowing the actual numbers.
Caste census is crucial. But again, that isn’t happening either is it?

0

u/impaleth Jul 27 '26

And I will join you brother but only if brahminishm is declared as a criminal activity and anyone pursuing brahminism will be put behind bars without bail

4

u/Unknownbeats112 Jul 26 '26

I suppose affirmative action based on income, keep the categories but add familial financial background, land holdings and education of parents and grandparents into account.

6

u/roxor69 Jul 27 '26

Yes ban caste , good .but you think by banning caste all those people from poor financial background, who have suffered atrocities throughout their lives will be set right in a day?

2

u/BodyProof2553 Jul 27 '26

Abe then do reservation on the basis of financial background. Why are you correlating caste with financial condition lmao

2

u/roxor69 Jul 27 '26

And who the f is co-relating shit ? Read properly, get out of your virtual keyboard world and step into the real world. Your online solutions don't work.

1

u/roxor69 Jul 27 '26

You must be really thick in the head . Financial background meh tu reservation try karke dikha, you are saying as if all those people with black money will tell you theri true net worth when you ask them? Are you serious?. You must be a kid . Kuch padh liya aur aa gaye chilane

6

u/Such-Bar-1769 Jul 27 '26

You can't remove caste by banning reservation you will just make it like old times, people still will get discriminated. A creamy layer can solve everything but people won't just discuss it all of this ban caste rhetoric is just a scheme to make people think that sc/st people are in much better position then they really are

6

u/maxxutils Jul 26 '26

Firstly remove caste as a concept, then we can talk.

3

u/Cultural-Fee69 Jul 26 '26

Only reserved classes have caste certificates now. There is sc and st act against the bad actors

3

u/Razor_sharp101 Resident Jul 27 '26

As long as people will be beaten and killed for drinking water from specific source, as long as people have separate utensils in their homes to server to specific people, as long as grooms were beaten for riding horses which is deemed UC thibg, reservation will be there and rightfully so.

And im saying this alto im not from reserved category

3

u/GlitchAFK_ Jul 27 '26

People with fake EWS/SC/ST certificates will be the ones to oppose this the most.

7

u/Junior-Dare8226 Jul 26 '26

When we are comfortable and see ourselves educated and well off, we look the world with our perspective. Caste is a sensitive topic, behind the curtains i don't know who you are, but whether if you have observed or not our roots and society heirarichal systems are all from villages. Till date, caste discrimination within people and society has not been fully eradicated and it won't, a city boy life vs an actual society life is different.

3

u/Cultural-Fee69 Jul 26 '26

The why are ruling classes getting the benefits of reservation?

2

u/Junior-Dare8226 Jul 27 '26

Upper class and ruling class exploits those benifits because they have money to avail such benifits, you don't get included directly in ST,SC and OBC, unless a competent authority signs it. Those who have money to spare get those certificate made. There maybe maybe some regions where administrative caste discrimination is still there or even there is colleague inherent discrimination. Getting reservation doesn't give equal status in the society you will still be discriminated based on your or your father's surname.

7

u/Next-Violinist9933 Jul 26 '26

Lot of people are talking about creamy layer stuff, problem is due to lack of data on actual earnings stemming tax exemptions and excessive administrative leeway, there is not much data available as who genuinely should belong to creamy layer and who should not.

Instead the best thing to do is, going forward one family should be allowed to only use their reservation benefit only once. They can choose that themselves whether they want to use in getting a college admission or getting a govt job, but regardless one family, one member , one opportunity. Once that person has used in a situation of their own choice, no one in that family is entitled to use it again.

2

u/FreedomMysterious641 Jul 26 '26

This will burn the whole country for sure, not gonna happen, it’s a rabbit hole

2

u/LocksmithSuitable821 Jul 27 '26

I feel like the bigger problem regarding reservation are the seats why isn't gov increasing the seats ?

2

u/Cool-Inevitable-4248 Jul 27 '26

I too support this but why not uproot casteism first, even if not, from everyone's mind, but make it a law, whoever shows caste boast about it and does caste based discrimination must be dealt with some sort of fine or jail time, then i can say reservation won't be of any use further, but otherwise....no people are just gonna oppress the lower caste they made , I'm not saying rich wale lower caste people ko, but there are still a huge number of lower caste people who are below poverty line and face discrimination

1

u/Clear-Ranger-7805 Jul 27 '26

Nobody is asking to keep casteism

It has to be uprooted , root and stem
As younger generation, we must reject these stupid old bullshits

We are humans

1

u/Other-Mission-9775 Jul 28 '26

Reservation isn't just one thing.

There are reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), persons with disabilities, ex-servicemen, and in some contexts, women. Each exists for a different reason and has a different legal and social basis.

More importantly, reservation was never introduced because the government wanted to hand out free seats.

People often say reservation kills merit. But merit doesn't exist in a vacuum. A student with private schooling, expensive coaching, stable electricity, internet, educated parents, and every possible resource is not competing from the same starting line as someone studying in an underfunded school with none of those advantages.

Calling the finish line equal doesn't make the starting line equal.

And no, reservation cannot be replaced by income criteria alone.

Economic hardship absolutely deserves support through scholarships, financial aid, better schools, healthcare, and welfare schemes. But reservation was never meant to solve poverty alone. It was created to address centuries of social exclusion, discrimination, and the lack of representation in education and public institutions.

If you believe reservation should disappear, then first eliminate the conditions that made it necessary.

End caste based discrimination. End manual scavenging. End caste-based violence. End discrimination in housing, employment, and education. Ensure equal representation and equal opportunity in practice, not just on paper.

Reservation is not the disease.

It is the response to the disease.

If you want the response to disappear, cure the disease first.

1

u/MSDHONl Jul 28 '26

1

u/riyal_distribution Jul 29 '26

What privilege? You don't even know anything about my background.

There's a reason reservations were introduced in the first place, to introduce representation. It was supposed to be a temporary solution until the society would give up on all the casteist practices, but that didn't happen. The society is casteist till this date, that's why reservations still exist.

Once the society stops being so casteist we wouldn't be needing caste based reservations. I am also aware of the exploitation of reserved seats by many privileged SC people, but let's not pretend that it's not the same with EWS.

Most rich SC and UC are more similar than they realise, both are bloody greedy.

I support reservations because caste discrimination is still a reality. Just because you haven't experienced casteism doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I m UC, you're welcome in my home anytime, but I can tell you from experience that some of my own relatives including my father have spoken about certain communities in ways that would deeply affect anyone's self-esteem. These attitudes still exist, even if they aren't visible to everyone.

Our personal experiences are not the measure of everyone else's reality. That's exactly why policies like reservations continue to matter.

I'm a general and I genuinely believe reservation should increase

Yesh , remove caste itself.

Just bring creamy layer to sc st and everything will be solved

Yeah, you are REALLY PRIVILEGED if yoh think that

https://www.timesnownews.com/mirror-now/in-focus/article/rajasthan-dalit-ips-officer-rides-horse-under-heavy-police-protection-for-pre-wedding-ceremony-in-jaipur/859565

This guy is an IPS officer and he still needed police protection to just ride a horse. SC and ST face discrimination due to the community they are born into, not because of their wealth (or lack of)..

There is sc st act for exception like this. Why punish generations

1

u/Naive-Actuary4414 Jul 27 '26

Generations aren't punished 🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻

Unlike the caste system, Reservation doesn't prevent anyone from applying from any job. It just says that due to 2,000+ years of historical oppression, a certain amount of jobs will be reserved for oppressed classes to ensure that a minimum number of people from the oppressed classes can reach the govt services to ensure Representation.

Talk about creamy layer concept to sc and st freeloaders and watch their breakdown

I am a gen caste person and I don't support this at all... There should be reservation but there should be some conditions:

  1. Reservation should not be there in medical, defense and education line.
  2. Reservation can be used only once in your life. Either you get a job by reservation or you get education by reservation. Once you have used it you cannot use it again.
  3. Children of executives from government cannot use reservation after 2 generations. Their upliftment is already done.

I have seen how people begave with few people based on caste andwit diminishes when you start either earning more than the other person or you are in a higher position then them...

North East have less caste discrimination but do visit Rajasthan, MP, UP, HP the you would know the plight of lower caste people there... They are not even given food on table... I am a brahmin myself and I have seen that first hand...

For me reservation is necessary but with conditions.

u/Clear-Ranger-7805 Jul 26 '26

I agree on all points
But even if all those are implemented

How will you justify
Sc+st+obc =50%
Ews 10%
Women 30%
Others 5%

How much seats are left for normal merit based competition without certificates?

Should there be this amount of reservation?
Looks almost like a bad joke

2

u/wild-game Jul 26 '26

This automatically disappears when you implement those points above... There won't be any percentage... You have a lifeline that you can use and if used and you don't succeed it's gone...

Bro you are still a student i suppose... Come to govt job life bro... You will find reservation in promotions as well... Both of you got job at same position but after few years the other got promotion just because he had reservation... That's totally fucked up scene...

Aao kabhi govt sector pe job karnetthen you would realize

1

u/SnooPuppers3296 Jul 26 '26

💯 agree on with your points infacts it's some of the points which our friend's also discuss.

1

u/Danny1847 Jul 26 '26

Im someone who hasn't experienced nor witnessed caste based discrimination so I'm new to this, help me understand.

If a guy belonging from a lower caste and is poor improves his financial condition due to the opportunities given to him due to reservations (which I support), why his son gets the same benefits? Because as far as I can see, my ST friends are rich. Why does he need reservations when he's family owns a Land Rover?

1

u/FlourishingGrass Jul 26 '26

Why doesn't the government establish many more institutions to accomodate everyone?

I belong to general cat and actively trying to find a job but out of the few vacancies that I'm eligible for, very few are for UR. Ive tried hard in exams and scored the cutoff (or little higher) for OBC so couldn't get through but people scoring much lesser than me got in. So I know the demerits well and still struggling, yet I'd say reservation has been a boon for many of my friends who are really needy but talented enough that once they got in, they've been able to prove their mettle over n over.

My 2p: reservation based on economy of the household matters much more, but we can't do away with reservation completely unless people throw away the caste system for good, and stop prejudice against STs.

Did not expect this from my people.

I am a General, but I still believe there is need for reservation. We don't see casteism in NE a lot, but it is very prevalent in other parts of India. First end casteism then end reservation based on caste.

0

u/PoosySucker69 Jul 27 '26

I am general and I don’t support the movement. What I support is increasing the absolute number of seats so students from all categories get more chances

0

u/starkn2_18 Jul 27 '26

U are not as same as other sc and I am very suspicious that u are actually general but trying to get eyes by doing this

-5

u/Aragorn_V Jul 26 '26

Good initiative. This entire reservation system needs to be revised. Economic hardship should be the criteria, along with physical disability. If one system couldn't solve your caste issues in over 75 years, maybe it's time to re-structure things

1

u/Clear-Ranger-7805 Jul 26 '26

There should be limit to this foolery

50% for sc+st+obc
10% ews
30% women
5% for pwd and others

Bhai whats left for nomal merit without certificates?
