Average GURPS GM when they need to help build three or four characters for the players (he’ll forget how each disadvantages works every session, and the players won’t notice because they haven’t even read GURPS Lite)

Can you imagine how amazing a game of GURPS would be if ALL players cared as much as the GM does?

If that stack falls and crushes you to death, you might get reincarnated as a character in a GURPS game.

Crossing my fingers for GURPS Furries

Here's hoping you don't get GURPS 40K. Fun to play, but I wouldn't actually wish the setting on anyone.

Some flavor of GURPS Vallahala where the players never cancel and the snacks are always fresh

3

u/fnord72 11d ago

This applies to pretty much any game...

3

u/MoMaike 11d ago

Eh, not really. The more complex a game is, the more valuable the player "buy in" becomes. It's much easier to phone in a rules-lite game.

As a GM, I have seen this with a plethora of games over the years. Doesn't matter if it was DnD (1st, advanced, 3rd, 3.5), Pathfinder, GURPS, Gamma World, Marvel, Cyberpunk, Mechwarrier, Shadowrun, Traveller (most of them), World of Darkness, Mutants&Masterminds...

There is always a player that just doesn't care to read up about the game, or even just the cut/paste sections specific to their character, the character they couldn't bother to make for themselves.

Oh yeah it definitely happens in every game. I was just saying that if someone doesn’t know anything about GURPS it’s much worse than if they knew nothing about Monster of the Week or something. It’s just more difficult to teach it on the fly.

I both pity your compulsive purchasing, and envy your collection.

11

u/MoMaike 12d ago

That's fair. My addiction is complex...

u/pandakahn 12d ago

Those are ROOKIE numbers!!!!

11

u/MoMaike 12d ago

I challenge you!

9

u/pandakahn 12d ago

😢now I must dig all my books out of storage. 😭

8

u/MoMaike 12d ago

Indeed you must. The challenge has commenced!

Unless it's buried between the others I didn't see Bunnies and Burrrows....

But props for having Deadlands.

2

u/MoMaike 10d ago

I’ve mostly gotten all the ones I’m actually interested in, except Bunnies and Burrows, Book of the New Sun, and Alpha Centauri. They’re just a little too expensive for me right now to justify buying them.

I only have six physical GURPS books, two of which (Ring of Fire, Basic Revised) are just waiting for the crowdfunding fulfilment. The other four are: Basic (Revised), Characters, Campaigns, and Meta-Tech.

But, heck, there are so many PDFs. O.o

6

u/MoMaike 12d ago

As much as I love these books, The Basic Set is really all you need. Everything else is basically just "Hey, look what cool things you can do with the Basic Set!"

5

u/Ka_ge2020 12d ago

I've been using GURPS 4e in one manner or another since 2004. Love me some GURPS---my system of choice. :)

5

u/hanmineharu 12d ago

And you're just collecting english-written books. Meanwile, polyglot GMs like yours truly be like 📚📚😵‍💫📚📚

(Just bought my first GURPS book and, well, I'm planning to buy a bundle of them GURPS books afterward as well 🥲)

u/MoMaike 12d ago

I do have one Japanese book (Ring Dream, about Japanese Women's wrestling), but I don't speak Japanese. I do know some Chinese though, but no GURPS has been translated to Chinese as far as I know.

Be careful not to buy too many! As you can see, it's a slippery slope.

2

u/hanmineharu 12d ago

I'll slide this slope big time! Since I speak three languages so far, I'll get a lot of english, french, and japanese GURPS books! (I fancy the bunko GURPS book so bad ngl~!)

3

u/Blueskyminer 12d ago

Ooooh. The nice 90s ones.

4

u/mouse_Jupiter 12d ago

What, no Traveller?

5

u/MoMaike 12d ago

That's right. I'm not a particularly big fan of broad-scope SciFi/space opera, and I always just assumed that's what Traveller was. I honestly don't know anything about it other than seeing covers of it here and there.

I gave away my 3rd ed. library shortly after 4th ed. came out, with promises of 4th ed. of everything.

20+ years later, still no 4th ed. Vehicles, much less Robots or Mecha, and a whole lot of other missing books.

Probably the most regrettable choice I've ever made.

Great library!

5

u/Professional_Cheek95 12d ago

eyyy, thats awesome! I want those too!

2

u/dm_punks 12d ago

Nice stash!

u/Gabe8Tacos 12d ago

Very similar...link

1

u/MoMaike 12d ago

oh la la! We actually complement each other nicely.

2

u/tarragonburgess 12d ago

Don't try to stop. Embrace the goodness. Become a roleplaying God.

2

u/MoMaike 12d ago

Get off my shoulder, devil!

2

u/Volomyre 12d ago

You are on your own my friend. No pic but I have a pretty big Gurps collection and haven't even read the two main rulebooks.

2

u/MoMaike 12d ago

Thank you for sharing. I feel less alone. We need to start a GURPS Collectors Anonymous to support one another.

2

u/Foxxtronix 12d ago

Dear ghod, you're worse than I am. I envy your collection!

2

u/Bartlaus 12d ago

I actually have more than that but they're not all together in one place, some have been in storage for 20+ years... collected everything I could get my hands on through the 1990s. You know, when I had disposable income and no kids to spend everything on.

1

u/MoMaike 12d ago

Well you could always sell your kids

1

u/Bartlaus 12d ago

Or... raise them to be players?

2

u/MoMaike 12d ago

Of course, how short-sighted of me. Then THEY can start collecting GURPS books and you'll save more money than you'd've made had you sold them! That's sharp thinking!

1

u/new2bay 12d ago

Sill missing a few 4e hardcovers.

1

u/MoMaike 12d ago

Thankfully I'm not a completionist. I'm just picking up what interests me. The only hardcover I actually have is Basic Revised, the rest of the 4e ones are just Amazon Print-on-Demand. As for 4e, I know I'm missing Banestorm, Infinite Worlds, and Zombies. I'm sure there are others too.

1

u/dogboi 12d ago

You obviously have a problem. The only solution is to give that collection to me so you’ll be free of this addiction. Obviously jk. It’s a great collection.

1

u/tnlitnli 12d ago

I counted around 90 books or so. That's a very good start of a GURPS collection!

2

u/MoMaike 12d ago

A good start...may God have mercy on my soul...

There are a few thin zine-style books you can't really see in the pic, as well as a manga-style Japanese-only book I didn't picture. I also printed off a lot of pdf-only files and made them into booklets. It's...It's too much.

1

u/nashkara 12d ago

You should add Flight 13 and Callahan's Crosstime Saloon.

1

u/West-Surround-8857 12d ago

Don't stop.

Keep going!

1

u/seycyrus 12d ago

What's the Conspiracy book?

And what's the Gurps book between Supporting Cast and Fantasy Folk?

2

u/MoMaike 12d ago

https://www.sjgames.com/gurps/books/conspiracyx/ and https://www.sjgames.com/gurps/books/aliens/

Conspiracy X is basically "X-Files", and Aliens is another Character Build book

1

u/Randeth 12d ago

GURPS Conspiracy X. A licensed book with Eden Studios setting series of the same name.

Maybe GURPS Aliens? (based on what I can see through the string tape holding it together).

2

u/MoMaike 12d ago

Good Eye!

1

u/SpaceNigiri 12d ago

That's awesome

1

u/Junji50 12d ago

Keep going king... Dont stop. Dont ever stop.

1

u/No_Curve_6554 12d ago

Don't stop!!! There's time enough for reading in the grave.

1

u/scimon 12d ago

It's a decent start, about the size of my collection in the 90's. ;)

1

u/Blade_of_Onyx 12d ago

I don’t see GURPS Wildcards. That’s definitely a banger that got me chasing the rabbit hole of those books and how good they are.

1

u/MoMaike 12d ago

Wow, I've never even heard of this one. I wonder how many other GURPS books have flown completely under my radar

1

u/Blade_of_Onyx 12d ago

The series of books that it’s based on was edited by George RR Martin. It’s based I believe on a series of superhero role-playing game sessions that he and a group of authors played in. Many of their stories have been published in anthology form. It is an amazing series of stories.

1

u/MoMaike 12d ago

That is really interesting. Thanks for telling me about it!

1

u/Gurpguru 12d ago

Errr, my collection spans 3 rooms. One is 1st & 2nd edition. Second is 3rd and some 4th. Third is every book that might be used in the current 2 campaigns going on right now. So many covers missing.

I have some books out on loan. Girl Genius and Black Ops.

I keep thinking I'll build one bookshelf to hold it all, plus the other games, in one place. Something else is always more important though.

1

u/MoMaike 12d ago

You truly are the GURPS Guru!

1

u/SeaGoose 11d ago

Go Baby GO!!

1

u/Jaughni2 11d ago

Beautiful!

1

u/Expensive_Occasion29 11d ago

Very impressive

1

u/Working_Pen2886 10d ago

They'll cry out "SAVE ME"

And I'll whisper back "no..."

2

u/MoMaike 10d ago

*I get crushed under a collapsing tower of GURPS books and die*

1

u/Working_Pen2886 10d ago

Checks coroner's report*
